Vehicle Detail

This is a 1965 European manual 230SL from CA which was shipped to the east coast in November 2000. I came into possession of it after an Ebay deal had broken when a CA MB dealer told the the original owners that the car was not in perfect condition as advertised on Ebay. The car was told to have some niks and not a 10 out of 10 point paint job. I had reached out through email explaining that I was interested. The original owner's nephew circled back to my email explaining what had happened with the dealer and how the dealer said the car was not perfect. I called the dealer and he explained there was a small finger print and it was more of a 7 out of 10 paint job. I settled with the owners family at a slightly reduced rate. I trusted him because he was emailing back and forth from his work address where he was the manager of a public pet retailer and had given me the dealer info. The rest of the vehicle had been listed as in perfect condition, new interior and paint, the engine was perfect with no rust anywhere. I decided to go for it and had it shipped across the Country. When it arrived it wouldn't start. The shipper quickly pointed out that the gas cap was on the back bumper and to check the fuel guage. Sure enough, we added 5 gallons and it started right up and then proceeded to receive an A' plus compression test from KOS Motors, a european classic collector and service company here in Montclair, NJ. They recommended a major tune up including plugs, wires, points, and all new fluids. The car has been running perfectly since. It was not in perfect condition however as had been described by the owner. The engine bay had not been repainted, there was a cracked rubber air hose which was duck taped, the firewall pad was original but cracked and falling off in several places. I slowly took care of all these little things over 10 years including: new firewall pad, air out take hose, brake service, a new inner member bar behind chrome front bumper this was an aluminum piece which was starting to get flimsy so I ordered this from K&K with the firewall pad and had them installed after the hood brackets had given out on me. I apparently showed off the engine bay too much but later found out that the hood brackets giving is a common issue for these Pagodas. When the hood popped and the bracket gave, the hood became scratched a little further. Not a problem, it still looked great in light ivory with the navy blue interior and top. I purchased a set of hood brackets from Gernold, a specialized 113 pagoda restoration specialist in ME. I again turned to KOS motors to have them installed and have the hood adjusted. As mentioned above, the original paint job was not perfect, there were a few nicks and small dings, an easy color to get away with and still look great. I had the car repainted this winter and it really looks great. Here's the original data card data: Engine: 127981-10-005940Transmission: 006159670 Paint, light ivory 2216 - Interior trim cognac leather (this was switched to navy blue as the cognac brown was an ugly medium brown)401- single seats416- hardtop mounted422-Mercedes Benz power steering641- white wall tires665 mode of packing VE 1737 folding top fabric, brown (switched to navy blue w chrome)front left axle - 071048front right axle 071042rear axle 00006862steering box 43385wheel 6jx14htire 185-14 phon I am now working on a new project as my friend recently went through a divorce and was forced to sell his 68 polo red Porsche 911 which I will have fun working on for the next few years. Good luck bidding and please email with any questions. Matt.Snyder @verizon.net
