Vehicle Detail
1972 MUSTANG MACH I Q-CODE COBRA JET SURVIVOR This is a true 1972 Two Door SPORTSROOF Mach 1 Mustang, Body code 63-R (2-Dr Sprotsroof Mach 1). It is a Charlotte built car that was originally sold in South Carolina. It retains the original Q-code 351-4V “Cobra Jet” Engine and original U code C-6 Automatic Transmission. The rear Axle, code 9, is a Limited Slip (Posi-Track) rear end with a 3:25-1 axle ratio which is great for cruising. It is painted the original color, code 6F, Gold Glow Metallic which was a special color in ’72, and has a code GF, Medium Ginger Vinyl and Knitted Vinyl interior. The blackout treatment on the Lower Rockers is the correct semi-flat black color. This MACH is what was termed a “SLEEPER” back in the day. It came without the hood blackout, rear spoiler, and Magnum 500 wheels….but sported the Deluxe Interior and high horsepower Q-Code 351 “Cobra Jet” engine. The info on data plate is: Body-63R, Color-6F, Trim-GF, Trans-U, Axle-9, DSO-22….. …ALL matching to this MACH I which was built 12/71. The VIN is 2F05Q149981. This MACH 1 will make an excellent show car or head turning driver for the high bidder. HISTORY: I am the THIRD owner of this awesome MACH 1. The ORIGINAL owner traded a 1969 Mustang MACH 1 in to Chap’s Ford Inc. in Chesterfield, S. C. on 2-10-1972. The ORIGINAL bill of sale goes with the car. The SECOND owner, who lived in Barrington, IL bought the MACH in August of 2002. It had just over 80,000 original miles on the odometer, a copy of his Illinois title also goes with the car. It was driven very sparingly while he owned it, mainly to shows and cruises. Due to this owners failing health, the MACH was driven even less for the past three years. Just enough miles to keep it serviced, maintained and in good drivable condition. The Odometer currently reads 88,440 ACTUAL miles. DETAILS: I purchased this MACH in December of 2010 and completely detailed the car, inside, outside, and underside! Most areas were detailed to MCA (Mustang Club of America) Occasional Driven Class guidelines. This MACH 1 is 95% ORIGINAL!! The ORIGINAL…not a reproduction…Owners Manual and Ford Tire Pressure sheet with correct VIN goes with the car. ALL sheetmetal is original, including all floor pans. I found no signs of body repair or rust anywhere on the car. The interior is all ORIGINAL except for the rear interior quarter trim panels. They were chalked so badly that I replaced them, cleaning and painting them just did not work out. The dash pad has a very small chunk out of the drivers side end. It is very minor and I did not feel it warranted replacing the original pad. All seat covers are in excellent condition, there is one three inch separation on the drivers seat left seam. It is not clear thru, only the vinyl layer is separated. Again, not so bad that it needed replacing, you have to push on the seat to even see it. The engine compartment is highly detailed in the correct manner using the same MCA guidelines. The engine IS Ford Corporate Blue although some of the pictures do not look like it. The Q-Code Cobra Jet chrome air cleaner is in excellent condition and still has all the correct original air intake attachments. The trunk area is also detailed out to original specs. The Firestone Super-Sports Wide-Oval spare tire looks to be the original that came with this car. It even has factory paint markings still on the sidewall and numbers on the tread showing no use ever. The COMPLETE original jack is also packed as it came from the factory. The headlights on this MACH are even the original incandescent type, not halogen. They could be the originals?? Almost every nut, bolt and screw taken out, cleaned up and put back are the original parts. All of these parts have the original stampings on them. There are even some factory paint markings on the undercarriage and NO signs of any front, side or rear damage repairs or rust. The doors line up PERFECTLY and open and close like new ones, tight, and without rattles. All the MACH 1 striping is the correct, original matte black. The paint is ORIGINAL, but as I understand it, has been clearcoated to add shine to the dulled finish. The paint looks EXCELLENT unless you get VERY close to the finish where you can see that it has aged. There is a touch up area on the point of the front bumper, there are three “bumps” on the left quarter panel from where something IN the trunk hit the quarter panel, and there are three small bumps on the side of the front left fender (see "additional" photos). All of the glass is the Original “CarLite” glass and in very good condition. The window weather striping has some cracks, but is not so brittle that it has “chunked” out. It still flexes and seals to the glass as it should. This shows that the car was very well taken care of, indoors in a dry climate. ALL aspects of the car operate properly except for the clock. The AM radio/8-Track works well but sometimes you have to jiggle the tape to get both speakers to work…no biggie. The Air Conditioning kicks on, but I am sure it needs a recharge of freon to operate properly. The Q-Code 351 Cobra Jet Engine runs very strong and sounds GREAT thru the “true” dual exhaust system. At idle and acceleration the sound is very “muscle car”, but at speed, the car is very quiet inside. The transmission is tight and shifts perfectly. The suspension and steering are tight and operate as they should. The “like new” tires are aggressive P225/70R/14 Goodyear Eagle ST raised white letter, M/S rated tires. They are mounted on BRAND NEW MAGNUM 500 wheels. The car came with the common “dog dish” hubcaps and trim rings. The car drives straight down the road with no steering wheel “wiggle” needed to keep it in a straight line and the ride is very smooth. Many, many hours were spent cleaning and detailing the car to the MCA specs needed for occasional driven cars. I used as many NOS and repro parts as possible to make it concours correct. Major NEW parts include: Brakes, Shocks, Complete Tune Up including Pertronix Ignition in the Distributer, Magnum 500 Wheels, Interior Rear Quarter Trim Panels, and Carpeting. Upon completing the work there was some seepage from the Radiator so I replaced it also….this MACH is READY TO GO!! EQUIPMENT: It is equipped with: Color Keyed Bumper, Front Spoiler, Unique Grill with Sport Lamps, Raised White Letter tires, High Back Bucket Seats, Color Keyed Racing Mirrors, Drivers Side Remote Mirror, Deluxe Two Spoke Steering Wheel, AM—8 Track Radio, Body Side Tape Stripes, and Brand New Magnum 500 Wheels and centers. Original Factory Options: 351 CID 4V Cobra Jet Engine, Select-Shift Cruise-O-Matic Automatic Transmission, 3.25 Limited Slip Rear Axle, Power Steering, Power Front Disc Brakes, Interior Décor Package, Instrumentation Group, Selectaire Air Conditioning, Tinted Glass, Full Console, MACH I Sports Interior and AM—8 Track Tape Sound System. NADA VALUE: As of 2-27-2011, Classic and Collectible NADA Value guide used by appraisers values this MACH at: LOW $12,040 AVERAGE $21,560 HIGH $28,280 This MACH looks, runs, and sounds FANTASTIC!!
