Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a GM Factory built Electric S-10. I have posted some info from Wikipedia for those uninitiated in the factory S10e. General Motors started with a regular cab, short-box (6' bed) S-10 pickup, with a base level trim package, added a half tonneau cover. In place of a typical inline four cylinder or V-6 engine, the Electric S-10 EV was equipped with an 85 kW (114 horsepower) three-phase, liquid cooled AC induction motor, based on GM's EV1 electric coupe. The EV1 had a 100 kW motor, GM reduced the S-10EV's motor because of the additional weight and drag of the truck so as not to overstress the batteries. Other than the reduced motor size, the majority of power electronics were carried over directly from the EV1, which mandated that the Electric S-10 use a front-wheel-drive configuration, unlike the rear-wheel-drive setup found in stock S-10's and in the competing Ford Ranger EV. Batteries Ovonic NiMH batteries were also available. These batteries were lighter at 1,043 lb (473 kg) and had 29 kilowatt-hours of storage for a longer range. NiMH also has longer life but cost more than the lead acid option. The battery pack was located between the frame rails, beneath the pickup bed. On all battery types, a passive battery monitoring and management system is used. This means that excess energy is wasted from cells with a higher charge, while the remainder of the cells reach the same state of charge. Charging The S-10 EV charges using the Magne Charger, produced by the General Motors subsidiary Delco Electronics. The inductive charging paddle is the model J1773 or the 'large' paddle. The small paddle can also be used with an adapter to properly seat it. The standard charger is a 220 V 30 A (6.6 kW), there is also a 110 V 15 A 'convenience' charger, and a high power fast charge version. The vehicle's charging port is accessed by flipping the front license plate frame downwards. The system is designed to be safe even when used in the rain. This truck was converted from lead acic to Nickel Metal Hydride batteries by EVBones in approximately late 2007or early 2008, judging by the dates written on some of the upgrade components. I purchased 2 of these trucks in California and brought them back to Ellijay Georgia in December of 2009. Ellijay is 85 miles north of Atlanta. I've had to use some of the batteries from this truck to repair the pack in my other truck that I am keeping so this truck will come with 18 batteries of the 26 required. These Ovonic batteries are 11 individual sealed cells banded together to make a battery. All of the 18 batteries have at least 1 bad cell but can be repaired using good cells. I can give you instruction on how to repair the individual batteries. My math says you can sacrifice 2 of the batteries to repair 16 batteries to a good usable state and only have to acquire 10 batteries to have a running vehicle. Used batteries are available for $150 each plus shipping from several sources on the S10e mailing list. I am moving and will be losing my storage space hence the sale. I do have a video of the truck running prior to pulling the pack. You will have to copy and paste it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKpYJ4L4M6w There is a dent in the left fender just behind the turn signal and a crease at the rear of the bed. Thanks to Auto Star Transport of Tallahassee Florida for their help in modifying the sheet metal during transport!! The front air dam is busted but can be repaired. See the pics. The damage is right around the tag holder and shouldn't be obvious after the repair. I had to do the same type repair on the truck I'm keeping. A body shop repaired it using a special kit they had for $100. I am an open book on this truck so feel free to email me and I can give you my cell to answer any questions you may have. The truck is missing the half tonneau cover which I imagine was tossed by the utility company that purchased it. Also the front under cover is gone too but I understand GM still has those in stock. The power steering control module is inop but I did swap in the PSCM from my other truck and the power steering worked. I would install some sort of electric ps pump with a proximity switch on the steering column to activate the pump if I was keeping it, but used parts are available. A charger is included in the sale. Email with any questions you may have. This truck is a good deal for someone who doesn't mind doing a minimal amount of work.
