Many took the time to write. Most of your letters were a study in Juvenilia Americana—an impromptu contest of which lowbrow quip could out-do the last, to describe your disdain for the alterations I have made to this fine, worthy, and faithful vehicle. It is apparent that to challenge, even visually, the maddening rush to imitate which is inherent in the American character is to invite the scorn of uninventive peoples everywhere. The goal—with classic cars, at least—is to replicate down to the last horsehair and drop of paint what other men have designed through their imaginative processes; anyone who dares put B where A was, or enhance D rather than the C we have come to love, is to become open to savage criticism. How dare one call into question our slavish imitativeness! Dare, indeed! Well, dear, misguided friends: Now is your chance to acquire this very vehicle yourself! Here is your chance to rectify this affrontery to car collectors everywhere! A literary project I am designing (do you mind the word?) enables me to offer forth, for sacrificial focus, the very car you worked so hard in those cute little put-down quips to disparage! There are a few rules; but if you subscribe to them, you will own this amazing vehicle for a FRACTION OF ITS VALUE! The rules: ? You will agree to pay, via Paypal, the winning sum within 24 hours of the close of auction ? You will agree that either you or your surrogate will TRAVEL TO THE CAR’S LOCATION (Grass Valley, CA), PLACE IT ON A TRAILER, AND REMOVE IT within TWO WEEKS, or 14 DAYS following close of auction ? You will sign an Agreement that the person listing this auction (the “Writer”) will have exclusive rights, without remuneration to you, to use your name, image, and “story” in your part of the written or filmed history of this project ? You will agree to complete the transfer documents to the letter in conformance with California law, where the vehicle is currently legally registered, and where it has passed all fee, registration, and smog test requirements within the last one month ? You will acknowledge that you have no recourse of return or reimbursement for your purchase of this vehicle ? You will agree to all and sundry decisions by the Writer involving the creative directions arising from this story, including without limit all media ? You will agree that the Writer will be the final arbiter of all matters having to do with the subsequent appearance of a work of art based upon this story, excepting your rights of ownership of the vehicle. Any conformation of the vehicle to your concept of accepted standards of construction and appearance of the vehicle post-sale will be your right, although the courtesy of subsequent communication of your modification to the former owner will enable any film/writing project to represent accurately your developing handicraft.
