True Survivor!!! Many people envision old school muscle cars as having big motors in fast back shaped cars racing down two lane roads in the late 1960’s. Cars such as the Chevelles, Camaros, GTO’s, Chargers, and 442’s. Once the mid-1970’s had been reached, the “big block” muscle car era was essentially over due to oil embargoes, stricter emissions regulations, and more economic styling for car designs. Pontiac had been made famous in the mid to late 1960’s with its GTO design and its less popular Firebird design. The Firebird was originally set up to be a sister car to the Chevrolet Camaro and both cars were produced to take on the pony car market that had been dominated by the Ford Mustang. The Firebird was not nearly as popular as the Camaro and Pontiac needed to find a way to market the car better. They decided to make an upgraded version of the Firebird entitled “Trans Am” in 1969. Because the Trans Am name was in direct conflict with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Trans Am Racing Series, GM struck a deal that made them pay a $5 royalty fee to SCCA for every Trans Am sold. The initial Trans Am was only in existence for about a year and a half before the second generation Firebird was released with a total of four trip packages: Firebird Base model, Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am. This would be Pontiac’s Firebird lineup until 1982 when the third generation Firebird was released with only three trip packages having dropped the Esprit model. The second generation Trans Am was offered with the highest performance motor available throughout its 1970-1981 lifespan. In the mid to late 1970’s the Trans Am was offered with the 400 cubic inch Pontiac built motor, as well as, the 403 cubic inch Oldsmobile built motor. This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is a numbers matching 400 cui Pontiac built motor in its last production year which is coupled by an extremely rare Hurst 4spd transmission. This car has 415 original miles and is a true survivor car with only a few blemishes in the paint and no rust. The interior is immaculate and is in the tan leather which also was a rare option for the 1979 production year. The engine fires perfectly and pumps out its 220 horsepower with a deep roar which is probably why so many were sold- 116,000 in 1979 to be exact which is still the record to this day for a single car’s yearly sales. The popular gold color scheme is the exact reverse of the iconic “Smokey and the Bandit” edition that are so recognizable. With an engine turned dash and the glass T-Top roof, this car is as attractive to look at as it is to drive! Contact Brian Ross for more information.
