For sale: 10 gallons of 87 octane gasoline encased in a 2000 Miata. As I was on my way to prepay for a clutch hose for my wife's manual transmission 626, my car started clattering and losing power. The temp gauged pegged as I was negotiating a still, under construction exit ramp on Loop 12, just accross from the now defunct Cowboy Stadium in lovely Irving TX. By the time I found a place to pull over, the engine was no longer inhibited by compression and could spin quite briskly on just the starter motor. Thinking it was just a broken timing belt, I had it towed to the dealer, where it was pronounced DOA. The timing belt is not broken but evidently, coolant should restrict itself to the water jacket, and not try to help out in the actual cylinders. It's possible it was a massive, sudden head gasket failure or a crack in a cylinder wall. Either way, my loss is your gain, unless your wife will question you for buying a car that needs a motor. The color option from Ebay is "Gold" but the Mazda name was some form of copper. This is quite apropos as the hail damage on the hood has the same look of those hammered ashtrays we made in shop class. If you're a golfer, it will be like old home week and indeed, I feel the car tracks better at speed due the random dimple pattern. This car is straight and rust free. The tires are good, the brakes and transmission are fine, the rear defogger for the glass rear window works, as does the A/C and heater. It has a after market cat convertor which works well enough to keep the check engine light off and the vehicle passes the North Texas emission and safety test. The rag top seals well but the rear frame rod will rattle over bumps, either that or the voices in my head have given way to a metallic noise when crossing expansion cracks. Please note the two areas of "clear coat demise" often prevalent in hot and sunny climes. The auto antenna has stripped gears so I just pulled it up and unplugged the module. I've owned the car around 3 years and found it a fun, reliable means of transportation until the engine lunched. It does need a drivers door window regulator. The power window switch plate trim retainers are null and void so I just wedged some paper in there to keep it in position. I also highlighted the right door panel where it has a small hole from being closed on the seatbelt during one of those times it failed to retract fully. This is such a well known feature of these cars, they might even come from the factory that way, but I couldn't say for sure. Being as how I live on top of a hill, it is possible to take a brief test drive; however, you will be responsible for getting the car back to my driveway.
