When introduced in September, 1963, it had few competitors, except Rolls-Royce and the stretch limousines produced by Cadillac and Lincoln. It was intended to be driven by a chauffeur, and featured an internal power window separating the front and rear seats. This Mercedes was owned by a Sheik of Saudi Arabia. Apart from governments and the Pope, famous owners of the 600 include celebrities such as Coco Chanel, Hugh Hefner, Elizabeth Taylor, John Lennon, Hanif K-Pooya, Jay Kay, Aristotle Onassis, Jack Nicholson, Hirohito, Simon Spies, Bob Jane, Elvis Presley, Rowan Atkinson and Jeremy Clarkson. Communist leaders who owned a Mercedes-Benz 600 include Nicolae Ceausescu, Josip Broz-Tito, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Enver Hoxha, Leonid Brezhnev, Kim Il-sung and religious leader Guru Maharaj Ji. The car was also owned by African revolutionaries Idi Amin Dada and Jomo Kenyatta. The Mercedes 600 was so heavy that the largest Mercedes-Benz engine at that time –the 6-cylinder 300 – was inadequate. Instead, a new engine with more than twice the capacity was specially designed to p the vehicle and its hydraulically-powered amenities: The massive 6.3L V8 "M100" engine. This new motor featured single overhead camshafts, dry sump and Bosch mechanical fuel injection and adjustable air suspension which allowed the car a smooth ride and good handling over any road surface. Produced from 1964 until 1981 in low numbers, this model had no equal in the Mercedes-Benz lineup until the introduction of the modern Maybach 57 and 62 models in 2002. With only 31,682 miles and also being a 1972 car (the last year when these were legally imported into the US) this is the consummate collectors Mercedes. Its unique hydraulic suspension is in excellent and fully-functioning condition. The custom cloth interior was ordered because, as a Muslim leader, the Sheik could not sit on leather. This car is fully loaded with a sunroof, all the curtains and everything works to perfection. I've owned numerous Mercedes (including a 220S Coupe, a 220SE Cabriolet, and myriad 280SLs that I own currently. This car is undoubtedly the most impressive. Previously I owned a 1968 Mercedes 600 (which sold at Hyman's for $57,000 two years ago) and this example is far superior to that car. It's quiet, fast, rattle free and everything works. It's equipped with a rare ivory steering wheel - and the original shot glasses are there too. She's rust free, original and large. Wind wings are in place, the stereo is Mercedes-Benz, albeit one year later.
