Vehicle Detail
1972 BMW 2002 I have had this car for almost three years and haven't driven it much at all. It's been sitting in the garage waiting. There is plenty of restoration work left for the next owner, but much has already been done. The car was bought in California before moving to Kansas and then to Virginia. The previous owner believed that it was originally a California car, it certainly has not had much rust damage. I really hate to let it go, but simply don't have the time to finish the project and I really want to park my daily driver in the garage! I can't guarantee reliability, but as a buyer I would not be afraid to drive this home. You'll have to provide license plates or transportation plates or put it on a trailer. The details below are lifted straight from when I bought the car. The only things I've added are a new throttle linkage from Top End Performance. I also bought a high beam switch but haven't installed it. It's sitting on the dash in the photos. I uploaded 3 videos to YouTube. Check them out if you want to see/hear the car run. It sounds pretty sweet! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtNCo0hsdOQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2VZVSGaFjk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldzt92YdW4U Work done within the last 10,000 miles: Major brake system overhaul- rebuilt ATE master cylinder, rebuilt ATE 4-piston calipers and rear cylinders, new rotors, new steel braided lines, new pads, late model booster installed (used but in good condition from 2002AD) 5-speed conversion (kit from Aardvarc Racing- great tranny and well balanced drive shaft), new master and slave cylinders, new 228mm Sachs clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, machined flywheel etc. New tii centrifugal style distributor, plugs and wires New pertronix electronic ignition New Bosch coil New water pump, hoses, and thermostat New heater box fan New Boge shocks, front and rear Two new tires w/ less than 5k mi. (the other two should be replaced soon) New carpet New headliner- sunroof portion was never completed, but fabric is included if you wish to finish it in the same material New front and rear windshield seals Details: Engine/Transmission: Engine idles slightly rough, but has good power, drives well, and I've been getting 25 to 30mpg. Transmission shifts great in all five and reverse. 2.0L with the E12 head Alternator was upgraded to an 80 amp Bosch alternator from an early 90's 320i tii centrifugal distributor with pertronix electronic ignition Dual Weber 40DCOE carbs with Korman manifold this car originally had an automatic transmission but now has a 5-speed (overdrive) Getrag transmission from an '83 320i. The original mounts were left intact so it can easily be converted back if desired. Interior: Carpet is new and is charcoal with black trim. The headliner is also new and is a black fabric with a linen pattern similar to the original white headliner. The sunroof portion was not replaced and is missing whatever panel is supposed to fit over the area- extra fabric will be included to cover this area if you choose to go that route. The seats have the original vinyl sides and trim but the center portion was replaced with a velour-type fabric. Everything else is original. The door and rear side panels are in good shape aside from the chrome coating that has peeled off of the trim and the chrome on the ash trays has some pitting. The dash and steering wheel have not survived well and are badly cracked (note that the steering wheel is from a later model and not the original round-centered type anyway.) The center console is in excellent original condition (non- A/C version.) Body: The car's original color was Riviera blue but was repainted once in silver and once in black. All of the exterior was stripped down to either the original paint, metal, or first coat of primer on top of the original paint, then primered. The car will still need minor body work before it is ready to paint. Inner door/ledges, engine compartment, and trunk areas still need some stripping and priming. Fortunately, the paint used previously is apparently very poor quality and comes off rather easily. The car has had minor fender-bender/ding damage which has been repaired but a better job needs to be done in a couple places. Again, this damage was very minor; no crumpling, it just looks like someone did a lame job of repairing minor damage. The only major rust damage I saw was a small area on the driver's side rocker panel, the spare tire well, and under the front end, straight down from the radiator (I'll call it the air dam). The damage was easily filled to prevent further rust. The front "air dam" needs moderate tlc to make it look nice, all other imperfections need only minor work to smooth. The fender wells and shock towers are in great shape as well as the entire underside including floorpans, pedal box area, etc. The windshield has a vertical crack about six inches in from the drivers side, extending from the top to the bottom of the glass. The crack was repaired and is not very distracting, but still visible. Trim/seals: The lower belt trim holes were filled with the intention of eliminating it, but can easily be knocked out if you prefer to install the belt. All of the belt trim will be included except one of the shorter strips. Most of the belt trim is in good condition. The rocker panel and upper trim will also be included. The rocker panel trim is in good condition, most of the upper trim is not, though some pieces may polish up fine. You will need to purchase a new set of fasteners for most trim. The upper trim holes were temporarily filled with silicon to prevent water leakage into the car. Door seals and rear quarter window seals are in poor condition. Another set of door seals will be included which are in better shape but also have some bad cracking. Black foam stripping was applied as a temporary fix; a sin, I know, but it works. Front and rear windshield seals were recently replaced. The trunk and sunroof seals are in good condition. Misc: The steering has a bad spot where it is a little loose (the sector gear has a small rust pit in it- go figure.) This is not dangerous and will not get worse, it's just mildly annoying when the bearing is intermittently aligned to that spot. License plate lights need to be replaced. Most parts will be included; one complete unit and one missing the lense, but you will probably want to buy new ones or at least new lenses. Passenger door lock mechanism is broken so the door cannot be opened from the outside. The tumbler is all that is broken- this would be a relatively easy and cheap fix. Many miscellaneous parts will be included, such as the original auto pedal box, flywheel, and shift linkage parts, original alternator, and more. Most of these items are shown in the last two pictures. If you don't want it, leave it, but it will all be available. This car originally had the Behr A/C unit installed, but all parts are missing except for the condenser fan and a wiring harness (not sure if it is the complete wiring, but I think so.) I cannot possibly mention the condition of all parts of this car, good or bad, thus it is being sold in as-is condition upholding that all information provided herein is true. If you have any questions or would like to take a first hand look at the car, please let me know.
