Vehicle Detail
This old diesel Vanagon has been in my possession since the late 1980's. I found it sitting behind a home east of Bakersfield, California with a blown motor. I picked it up--towed it home--re-powered it with a 1.6 NA diesel and the rest is history. I also swapped the trans out with an air cooled Vanagon trans for the higher gear sets. By the pictures you can see it has alloy wheels but also Michelin LT tires that about about 50% worn. The power plant is getting tired but runs. The engine still pulls like a banshee. I use it frequently in and around town to haul large objects. It fires up and does not overheat. But sooner or later I would be thinking about a transplant. It will sit for weeks on end then get a weekend use hauling stuff. The reason I have not re-powered it is because I have considered the TDI 1.9 for this van. I've driven a few of the transplanted 1.9's in these vans. For the open highway that is the way to go. But for around town I never had an issue with this 1600 diesel. Smokes? Somewhat on a hard pull. I do have a very low mile short block and a new head sitting in storage. That "may" be included in this sale depending on discussions with the new buyer. Since this is the last diesel I own this short block might go with the sale. This van has 133,000 on the clock. It has its fair share of dings and scrapes. But there is no rust. The van came originally from St George Utah. (I have the original window sticker framed for the new buyer). The van does have the floor furnace but I have never fiddled with it. I did have this vehicle in Yosemite National Park for several seasons running in and out of the park. 3rd gear it will stay with the best of the best on the twisty roads. It handled the snow without any issues. I put in later Vanagon front seats with arm rests. The center seat is gone. And has been since the day I bought it. Basically---the van is complete. It's never been wrecked. It has a huge rear bumper on it with a Class 2 hitch. I found that bumper at a Pick and Pull several years back. It was custom made for the Vanagons. So bottom line---This is an original version of the diesel Vanagon that VW imported into the USA. The paint, the headliner, the basics are all original. The van is a decent project for someone who wishes to re-power it. Or drive it as is. It has two clips on the front if you wish to tow it home. Or. put the key in, drive it home--albeit in the slow lane with great consideration of the capability of that Rabbit diesel power-plant. Hit me with questions. The vehicle is in Fresno, California and I "may" consider meeting a buyer 1/2 way if you are coming from out of state. Like I previously stated, it has tow clips on it.
