Flathead V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front axle and live rear axle with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 114" - Rarest of all Ford woodie wagons from 1935 to 1948 - All trim and equipment features of the Super Deluxe model inside and out When it comes to ranking collectible cars, rarity is always a top consideration. Other factors include eye-catching design and the quality of workmanship and materials, along with being a car not easily replicated in today’s market. These are some of the reasons that explain the continuously growing interest in woodies. Always uncommon and offering a special sporting image with their varnished hard rock maple framework and contrasting panels, Ford woodies were relatively typical transportation for top actors in Hollywood. Today, non-car people who know quality furniture and exceptional woodwork in fine homes are attracted to great woodies by the quality of workmanship and materials not seen in regular cars. When it comes to an exceptional woodie, it’s hard to beat a rare 1942 Super Deluxe Ford V8. This car has the desired updated styling that appeared late in 1941 with production ending in January 1942. Ford Motor Co. intended to make their 1942 wagons more competitive with Chrysler Town & Countrys by building only the Super Deluxe models. The very short production run makes this 1942 a very rare woodie indeed. The number of 1942 woodies built was quite small compared with annual production in the years 1935 through 1948 of Ford’s wood-bodied station wagons. With World War II underway, the Army and Navy needed cars, which may have accounted for a significant percentage of 1942 production made in standard form for the military. Even with relatively large gatherings of Fords and other woodies at major car events, a 1942 Super Deluxe V8 woodie very seldom appears. When one does show up, crowds are drawn to it because of its rarity and its unique-to-1942 stainless steel grille with vertical bars. Indeed, this rare Ford woodie would be welcome to, and appreciated at, virtually any vintage car event. It is a original "barn find" and has spent all its life in Sunny California. We believe that the mileage shown on the odometer is correct at about 95,000 miles. This car has never been molested and is 100% complete. It very well might be one of the last 1942 Ford woodies around. They are much rarer than other years as production was stopped in mid year because of World War II. The car, is 100% complete and 100% original. When they are gone they are gone. Done right as a restoration, Hot Rod or with the original look but a modern chassis under it this car will be worth well over $100,000 when completed and done right. Money in the bank or your 401K is earning you very little today. Why not take some of that money and buy this car or have it build by us and watch it go up in value each year while you enjoy it? Last time I checked there were no luggage racks on hearses and your are not going to take it with you. You have worked long and hard, why not reward yourself? The last photos are what this car could look like when finished. People ask us all the time why Woodies cost so much. To build this car the way it should be done and to the standards both you and we want will cost about between $70,000 and $80,000 (+ the cost of the car) Much of the cost is in the wood. To build a wood kit for a car like this and then to put a high quality finish on it and mount the wood and all the glass and complete the doors and interior is quoted at about $40,000 or more by anyone we know of doing high quality wood kits today. As you can see. The cost of the car and the wood is close to $55,000. Rust repair, body work, restoration or new chassis, tires and wheels, paint and chrome and a bunch of new parts and labor takes you up there pretty fast, BUT woodies are one of the few cars you can build today and when you are done get your investment back out of it.
