Vehicle Detail
Retired 2007. My 81 VW "Caddy" gas fueled work beater pickup, eminently restorable /project vehicle. (Only manufactured '80-'84, can be vintage/historical (license plate) registered, restored.) Basically a Rabbit on (very) light pickup frame (13" tires.) Post retirement, 3 miles r/t to Walmart, 3 times a week. Time to let go for project/restoration, new life. I purchased it thru a web Caddy site 2002 (non-auction), flew into Portland from LVegas, drove it to So. Cal desert, Death Valley. Now reside Kingman, AZ. Admittedly needs tool box, paint, motivated individual. Oregon and SW desert lifespan--no rust frame/chassis/body, solid/rustless shock towers, custom diamond plate tonneau, 1.8L rebuilt engine (1.7L replaced 2004), runs well--good uphill torque in correct gear, 32 mpg, burns no oil--1.8L never over-driven (50 mph max). May need new clutch (shifter linkage for sure), many niggling "this/that" fixable2restore. Shade-tree owner/mechaniced. (Death Valley, isolated, DIY/survive, get to work, groceries, NAPA). Dash fascia removed (light switch replacement), never bothered to reinstall fascia. (See parts on tonneau pic. Figured I'd have to take it apart again at one time or another. KIS.) Walmart tires 70%. Transmission okay--but no speed shift (best guess is worn synchronizer). Driven 100 miles r/t daily 2002-2007, all elements (blister heat, rain, dust storms, floods/washouts)--never missed day of work, 5 years. No mistreatment. Change oil & filter, drive sensibly. Body, frame, chassis--very good condition. Very slight surface indentation driver side rear panel. (No dent, needs no formal repair.) Examples of "this/that's": At fill up, fuel tank gurgles, back-flow upchucks. (I use 5 gallon containers--3 included w/purchase--pre-fill, slowly fill tank, 1 gal per minute.) Both cv's replaced 2004, right front could use new (special socket tool required/included.) Windshield washer jets currently inop, interior headliner needs replace or re-glue, obvious exterior paint fade, radio & speaker inop, odometer inop (stuck at 282999), speedo okay. Fuel gauge registers full @ full, reads empty with 1/4 tank used. Driver seat has tear at one seam, passenger door latch inop, driver door handle latch tab broke (screw replaces tab), dash and fascia above average condition, temp/heat/fan op, emergency flasher/head/backup lights, turn signals op, steering wheel needs attention as does anything ext/int rubber/plastic (age). Had aftermarket a/c at one time. Front dash vents & fan switch installed (see pics). Compressor bracket available. Things I replaced 2004 and later: engine/w/pump/clutch, clutch cable, battery, alternator, start injector w/fuel hose, front brakes, KN air filter, plugs/cap/rotor, engine idle regulator, fuel filter, engine pan, r/l cv's, one rear tail light assembly. Rabbit parts commonly available. Custom diamond plate tonneau worth more than the Caddy? (Eye of the beholder.) Caveat Emptor: I don't recommend driving this pickup as is. It is sold as vintage restorable/project vehicle only. (Noted here in auction ad & sale agreement. It starts fine but has too many issues to be safe transportation as is (shifting, cv, mostly.) I consider it a project vehicle. Other than what is stated here, it is what it is--WYSIWYG--30yo vintage/historic restoration project vehicle, or repaired, quite a good fuel efficient local driver. Clear title. U Pick Up. PayPal. Good luck with your bid. Surprise yourself! Easy to work on/restore, drive. Not many Caddy's around, especially rust free, proven driver. Any Q; just ask.
