Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on this very original 1984 Volkswagon Vanagon GL Wolfsburg Edition Westfalia full camper. I acquired this from the elderly original owner who bought it new from Pete Lovely Volkswagon in Tacoma Washington. It is very well documented with the original window sticker(pictured) original odometer mileage statement and also some original dealer sales brochures from 1984(pictured). A file folder with many service receipts from Pete Lovely Volkswagon who serviced the vehicle while the owner lived in the Seattle area and was employed at Boeing. There is even a receipt for the 1,000 mile service and the original temporary 30 day license/permit that you tape in your window. There is also the perma-plate certificate. When the original owner retired and moved North to the Bellingham Washington area the van was serviced at Roger Jobs Volkswagon in Bellingham. Always garage kept and dealer maintained and it shows with the condition of this 26 year old vehicle. It appears that the original owner was diligent and particular about the maintenance for the first 16 years and that there were about 65,000 miles put on the van in that time. The last 10 years there were only about 11,000 miles put on it and it sat in the garage the majority of the time. There is a receipt from Les Schwab on 9/06/03 for new tires at 75,218 miles so that means the tires have 1522 miles on them and that the van has only gone 1522 miles the last 7 years. Fortunately the van was parked inside and the tires still look like new. There is also a receipt for a transmission rebuild and new clutch in 2000 with 65100 miles on the van, so the new clutch and rebuilt transmission have 11,640 miles on them. There are many other receipts but I thought I would mention these because they are major and help with the mileage timeline. Only 76740 miles in 26 years, that is less than 3000 per year. There are not too many left with low original miles like this. Exterior: The original paint and general exterior of this van are in excellent overall condition. The paint still shines like new and only has a couple of minor dings. One on the left rear corner and one on the front. Having lived its entire life in the State of Washington be assured there is NO RUST any where on this van. With the factory undercoating , dry garage parking and mainly summer use this van is in amazing condition exterior wise. There are only 3 of the original hubcaps, the 4th hubcap doesn't match. Windows are all in good condition. Front windshield has two rock dings, both are off to the side so they don't bother your vision and look to have been repaired. The sliding door closes well but has a mind of its own when opening. You hit the latch and it opens about 5 seconds later. I'm sure its just an adjustment. The pop top in in excellent condition with no damage but the original pop top gasket while still decent has a break in the rear corner and should be replaced soon. All lights and signals work as they should. This van has never been wrecked or repainted. Also I should mention there is only a drivers side mud flap and no sign that there ever was a passenger side. Rear bumper is pushed in slightly on the right side. Interior: The dash is crack free and does not appear to be faded at all. The swivel seats and cushions are all in great condition with no tears and show very little to no wear. I also have the extra bench seat that is in new condition and has never been in the van. The carpet is still the original and is in good shape with some normal wear and a stain here and there. There is a spot behind the battery box where it looks like someone must have set a battery because there is small area with more damage, not horrible just want to disclose. I will try to get a picture of it. All of the cabinets, fridge , stove, sink and the two tables look like they have seen little or no use and all are very nice and work like they should. Headliner and door panels are excellent. Pop top canvas looks to be original and in very good condition. I found one small pin hole on the side. Comes with original power cord to plug into external electricity and original jack in storage bag. There is also a mosquito net and some other snap type covers in the rear closet. The air conditioning belt was off when I got the van and I haven't checked it. I would assume it needs work or at least a recharge/conversion. We don't really have a need for air conditioning in our area so I suppose its possible the previous owner simply took it off for better mileage and power. Compressor turns freely. The heater(has front and rear heat), defrost, wipers and washers work as they should. The optional rear wiper and washer work as well. Has rear defroster and four speakers from the factory. Has a Clarion AM/FM cassette player that is working as far as the radio part, I have not tested the cassette player. Engine/Running Gear: The engine starts right up everytime and runs fine with good power. No smoke or strange noises. This is the water cooled 1.9 with air conditioning and power steering. Oil looks great and was changed just before I got the van. Seems to turn over a little slow to me though I am not familiar with Volkswagons. Transmission and clutch work as they should. I found that the valve cover gasket on the passenger side was leaking and had been leaking for some time. I replaced that and it is no longer leaking but there is oil from the leak on the engine around that area. I had the brakes checked by a local mechanic. Rear brakes are fine and the front brakes needed new pads so I had that done. Rotors looked good as did drums. The red temperature light is blinking non-stop indicating low coolant but the coolant level is fine and the engine is not overheating and the temperature gauge works properly. I did some research and this is a common problem. I ordered a new coolant level sensor but it hasen't arrived yet. If this takes care of the light, fine, but if it doesn't I will leave it to the new owner. Summary: I got this van about a month ago (owner passed away) and have been driving it occasionally to check it out. I have driven it about 100 miles total to make sure everything works fine. This is a vey good example of a low mileage mostly all original West Coast Survivor. You wont find too many Westys of this age that are in this condition without restoration. This will make someone a very nice family camping rig. If you are expecting to get a perfect vehicle this is not it but it is a very well preserved 26 year old gem. Buyer will need to arrange shipping. If you want to come see the van just give me a call to make an appointment. Kevin 360-739-2753 I live in Blaine Washington which is about 100 miles North of Seattle on the Canadian border. I will need a $500 non-refundable deposit via paypal within 48 hours of auction end and full payment within 7 days with cash or wire transfer. No checks! I am going to be very firm with this timeline. If you are high bidder but don't follow through on time I will either offer it to the next bidder or relist. You can keep it here(inside) for a while to arrange shipping but it needs to be paid for. If you have questions please ask and I will answer promptly. The answer to the question "if I buy this do you think it will make the drive to where I live" is I don't know. It runs great and has no major issues so it will probably have no problems driving home but as with any used vehicle it is sold as is where is with no warranty of any kind. If you are going to send a shipper to pick this up I will help with coordination. The reserve is set well below $10,000.
