Vehicle Detail
I purchased the truck in April ’07 with just under 45k miles. The car lot dealer said the original owner towed a 5th wheel for wintering in AZ, returning to the OR coast in the spring before passing away, his son had the truck for several years in which it saw little use before putting it up for sale on consignment. The original owner installed a trailer brake controller which I’ve never used, tachometer and a US Gear D-Celerator exhaust brake in '97, $1400 including installation according to the service records for braking on steep descents (works well.) It is wireless, inserted into the exhaust pipe ahead of the first muffler, with an illuminating actuator button on the steering wheel and dash mounted control unit. He also added the diamond plate step running boards, bed rail protectors and tiedowns. http://www.usgear.cc/dcelerator.htm The truck has most of the available options-- power windows/locks/mirrors, AC, block heater, tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers. It has the stock underhood transmission cooler but not the optional underframe cooler. The metal plate affixed to the differential says stock 3.73 rear end gearing. After buying I put on new tires and shocks, the tire shop recommended a complete front and rear major brake overhaul which was done, the brakes remain smooth and precise since rebuild. The pickup bed showed only slight use or wear with some surface rust under the gooseneck hitch mounting plates. I applied a couple coats of metal enamel to the bed , fender wells and inner tailgate after prepping then covered with a heavy rubber bedmat and tailgate protector. The mounting plate drillholes were plugged with carriage bolts. The bedsides and front were left unpainted, see before and after pics from '07 before bed canopy was put on. Also put in a new 1000 CCA diesel battery. There is trailer connector mounted in the bed for a 5th wheel hitch, I plugged in a flat 4-pin adaptor routed out to the frame hitch for compatibility with a small camp trailer we enjoyed several times a year. During the several years of ownership I replaced the sagging headliner with a lighter gray headliner fabric which brightened up the cab. The dampness on the driver's floor was fixed by a bodyshop replacing the weatherstripping completely around both doors and power windows. The rest of the cab glass weatherstripping is in good condition, doesn't leak and wasn't replaced. The front and rear speakers were either bad or not working, the Dodge dealer ordered and installed new speakers front and rear, sounds as good as they can, cassette and all radio functions work, range reception is typically poor. They also replaced the passenger window regulator which fixed its sluggish operation. I brought the truck into the Dodge dealer in May '08 for the major 48,000 mile scheduled maintenance ($618.25) Oil and filter change, air filter, fuel filters, transmission flush and refill, transmission band adjustment, valve adjustment and belts/hoses check with none replaced. I removed the grill to give the faded grill inserts a rattlecan spray. None of the inserts are cracked or broken. It is too cool to use AC on the Oregon coast so while heading up into the Cascades this summer it was a warm 85 degrees and the AC comfortably cooled down the cab in a short while though the air out of the vents was not ice cold to the touch, I don't know what it should feel like. I removed the jump seats and disassembled for a thorough vinyl cleaning and a respray of the metal supports and mounts. The dated but serviceable bed canopy has a lock and key. Removing the side windows and replacing the sealant tape around the frames fixed a leak. The canopy window struts were replaced so the window stays open. There are three dents, two at the upper rear corners beside the tailgate ( wife dropped her corner putting on the bed canopy, I jacknifed the trailer at a tight campsite for the other) and one at the passenger front fender where the black trimstrip meets the grill surround (look close.) There is no sign of collision bodywork externally or from underneath. The only thing nonfunctional that I am aware of is I recently noticed the license plate lamps are not illuminating and a check of the bulbs show them both to be good. The overdrive defeat illuminates when engaged and works nice in mountain driving. An occasional whistle in the driver's side vent window is eliminated by tightly snugging and relatching. The steering is good with no shake or shimmy at any speed nor play in the wheel. This is a teenaged truck with the associated nicks, chips, scratches which pictures don't do justice, only close personal inspection reveals. The benchseat fabric has several burns. I removed the carpeted dashmat it came with last year. The dash has no cracks but areas of discoloration from the dashmat adhesive and holes drilled probably from a previous instrument cluster. No cracks in the windshield, there is a small chip and some smaller pits. The chrome wheel trim rings and 'poverty caps' are as new. It took awhile to understand the fondness of fans for these 1st gen 12-valves, to learn to work with its operating characteristics in different conditions, to anticipate with the development of rising power spooling up from its depths to meet the rising road where hilly and twisty. It doesn't squirt in and out of traffic nor, with its ponderous turning radius, zip in and out of parking lots. Shouldering a load over most any road terrain is where it absolutely shines. Included is a picture of well over a ton of roofing materials for a home roofing project which squatted the springs and squished the tires but was handled without complaint, no huge difference in acceleration or braking, just softened the stiff sprung ride and changed the driver view angle out over the hood. Selling after buying a newer, smaller truck that better suits our needs. My first listing of an item for sale on Ebay and unfamiliar with the ropes, listing because I think the truck represents more value to a buyer for whom it has use and appeal than my trade-in offers. I paid over bluebook because I thought it was alot of truck for the money, having long heard good things about this reputable engine and chassis combination and over time came to know how in what ways its value resides, in using it for what it was designed, engineered and built for and a real pleasure to own and operate accordingly. These sturdy old school reliable workhorses are real beasts, it is what it is, no more and importantly no less. The simplicity of pre-electronic computerization lends itself to common handtools and knowhow and a spacious engine compartment of comprehensibility offset by a trucklike ride and lack of sophistications and conveniences of later vehicles. With 1200 lbs of engine block and a liter per cylinder of displacement the 12v engine noise directly rises and falls with power demanded which is either liked or not. Starts well, roaring to life before a single engine revolution even though started only once or twice a month. Sorry for writing a book that maybe only a present owner would understand. If having questions and would to like to speak personally or make arrangements for inspection drop an email here with your email address and I will return our home phone number. In case the photos don't show well they are loaded into this album (58 pix) with some comments and verified to be large and good resolution. http://cid-59cca26d9cc2add4.photos.live.com/play.aspx/1993%20Dodge%20D250%20Ram%20LE/manuals.JPG?ref=2
