1974 VOLKSWAGEN THING CONVERTIBLE- RARE OLIVE GREEN COLOR(NOT SURE exactly WHAT VW CALLED IT. RUNS AND DRIVES REAL GOOD. SHIFTS GOOD, NO ENGINE SMOKE, CLUTCH IS GOOD, TIRES ARE great, BRAKES ARE GOOD.last owner installed new ball joints not long ago IT WILL NEED A TOP AND SIDE WINDOWS, THE SIDE WINDOW FRAMES ARE THERE BUT THE WINDOWS ARE YELLOWED AND CRACKED. THE TOP FRAME IS GOOD BUT THE TOP HAS SOME SMALL HOLES IN IT, LOOKS LIKE WHERE A MOUSE MIGHT HAVE NIBBLED ON IT,,,,,,,,, OVERALL THE TOP LOOKS GOOD THOUGH AND WILL STILL KEEP YOU BASICALLY DRY ON A RAINY DAY.I OWN A BODY SHOP AND FOUND THIS CAR AND FEEL HONORED TO OWN IT.You will too! My wife and I have driven and enjoyed it this summer and we are building a new home and just are letting a few of my projects and cars go so we can spend more time on the house project. THIS IS A REAL FIND FOR THE PERSON WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY WANT AND KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COVERED UP RUST BUCKET AND A CAR THAT IS HONEST AND ONE THAT YOU CAN SEE WHAT YOU ARE PURCHASING.This is a great car if you are looking for one to just "drive" and also a great candidate for a body off pan restore.I tell my customers when they are searching for a car to restore, dont buy a car or truck that is cosmetically appealing, buy one that has a sound structure that you can get in and drive . The cosmetics are the easily added later!!! flash is hard to ignore but it will get you in trouble with these little cars that were so prone to rust and that era particularly was not known for producing cars that would not rust out quickly, either foreign or domestic... I was 17 during these years and remember those rusty cars on the road that had holes in them before their 3 year warranty was up. THEY ARE ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE, YOU CAN PAINT THEM OVER AND OVER BUT THIS ONE, OTHER THAN A FEW SMALL RUST HOLES, IS ORIGINAL, THE PAINT IS ORIGINAL AND THERE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A MINOR DING REPAIR TO LEFT FRONT FENDER MANY YEARS AGO AND THAT LITTLE PORTION OF THE FENDER WAS SPOTTED IN, YOU CAN SEE THE PAINT NOW WHERE IT HAS FADED AND YOU CAN SEE EXACTLY WHERE THEY BLENDED IT. AND..... OTHER THAN THE USUAL RUST HOLE UNDER THE BATTERY, THE PANS ARE NEARLY PRISTINE.............ONE HAS A DENT IN IT, BUT BOTH ARE NICE WHERE THEY MEET THE BODY, THE PAN BOLTS ARE NICE AND EASY TO SEE HOW RUSTY THEY ARE NOT!This car has never had a "gas heater". Still has spare, the jack and lug wrench,handle with it! YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE IT TO BELIEVE IT! I CAN RESTORE IT AND PAINT IT AND IT WILL BE SHINY. YOU CAN DRIVE IT LIKE IT IS NOW OR FOREVER AND TAKE IT TO SHOWS AND ADVERTISE IT AS ORIGINAL PAINT AND TROPHY EVERY TIME,,,,,,,,,,,I COULD FIX THE FEW PLACES(HOLES) IT HAS AND SPOT THEM IN,, THIS WOULD BE WISE AND LEAVE THE REST OF IT ALONE,,,, YOU COULD STILL SAY IT WAS 95% ORIGINAL PAINT OR BETTER.THE HOLES ARE MINOR AND ARE IN THE OUTER ROCKER PANEL, JUST STARTING TO SHOW THRU, I HAVE PUT RUBBERIZED U COAT ON THEM TO STOP THEM.These were due to the rocker being stopped up and not getting washed out at the drains and are confined to a small area. WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW AN OLIVE DRAB THING WITH ORIGINAL PAINT??????????????? IT'S A CAR THAT WOULD BE HARD TO FIND ANOTHER TO COMPARE TO. FEEL FREE TO COME AND LOOK, drive it and kick the tires,,,,,, it is LOCATED IN HICO,WV 30 MILES NORTH OF BECKLEY ON US 19 I CAN DELIVER FOR A FAIR FEE WITHIN A 200 MILE RADIUS-CAR MUST BE PREPAID. note: wipers work radio works lights work shifts great stops great steering is tight-almost too tight, I think the steering box needs loosened up, the ball joints being new are stiff and it needs driven . the miles I cant say are 100% right, the speedo and odo do not work at this time. If I were to bet, I would say it probably does not have too many more than 50k on it. This is my best guess. It should drive anywhere .thanks for your questions. I can mig weld the small holes in the outer rocker panel and fill and spot paint these areas keeping them small for a nominal fee.
