Vehicle Detail
It’s only original once... This is the ‘69 Camaro you have been searching for! Up for bids is this extremely nice survivor 1969 Chevy Camaro RS coupe... THE REAL DEAL! NOT A CLONE OR A "TRIBUTE" CAR! COWL TAG INFO 69-12437NORXXXXXX BDY TR 723 63 F PNT 04C X11 ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN This X11 Norwood built Camaro RS is believed to be a matching numbers survivor with its original drive train. I have no doubt it is a true Rally Sport (RPO Z22) with Style Trim Group. I have the original Protect-O-Plate, warranty card, headlight washer tag, owners manual and a list of documentation from the day it was purchased through about mid 1984. This is a very unique car with an interesting history. The engine is a 307/200 HP (Code DC) with 2 barrel carb and Powerglide transmission. The numbers on the engine pad beneath the alternator read "T0410DC" which matches the Protect-o-plate (see photo), but I couldn’t find any vin numbers stamped there. It runs exceptionally strong and smooth, showing 44,000 miles on the odometer, which I believe to be 144K reading through the documentation. I have added Flowmaster mufflers, a new radiator and water pump. I also flushed all the fluids and replaced all the drive belts and hoses. The original 2 speed PowerGlide shifts just like new. If it is not driven for months at a time it leaks a little transmission fluid. If it is driven a few days a week it doesn’t leak. No big deal, just wanted you to know. It looks like it has been this way for a while, even prior to me purchasing it. A very rare option on this car is Special Steering package (RPO N44) which includes power steering and a Quick Ratio steering box. Another interesting feature about the car is the cables attached to the engine mounts. I understand this was a factory Service Bulletin recall from GM in 1969. The cables were added to prevent engine torque from breaking motor mounts. The rear end option on this car is a 10 Bolt Posi Traction (RPO G80), 2:73 Ratio. This car still rides on it’s original GM spiral shocks... both front and rear! It drives and rides like the day it rolled off the assembly line. PAINT & BODY This Camaro RS retains 90% of the original 41 year old Champagne Gold (Code 63) paint. The paint has slight fading over the years, but you can see the original color in the door jams. The paint is very presentable and just adds to the cars originality as a true survivor. From my research I have found less than .5% of the Camaros were painted this color. I am 61 years old, and have never seen another one in this color. There were 243,085 cars produced in 1969, making this one of 12,155 This color is even more rare than Butternut Yellow and how many of those have you seen? How many original RS cars? http://www.69pace.com/paint.htm The trunk pan in this car is very solid with its original spatter paint looking factory fresh. Original spare and jack accessories are also with the car. The shock towers and X-brace inside the trunk are perfect. Look at the photos. The front subframe and rear frame rails are perfect with no problems at all. The original glass (except for the windshield), window fuzzies and body weather stripping remains in very good condition. All windows roll up and down as they should. The windshield has a very small star crack at lower center. Both front fenders have a small rust-through area just under the rocker spear. The driver side fender has a dent near the headlight door as you can see in the photos, but would be an easy fix. I have a nice original 307 fender emblem that will go with the car. The original vacuum-operated RS hide-away headlights open and close as they should. Notice the vacuum tubing in the engine compartment for the Rally Sport headlight door openers. Also this car is equipped with headlight washers. The outer section of the grille will need to be replaced, but the inner section with the chrome is fine. The tail lights and back up lights work and are in mint condition. The photo showing the RS specific back up light wiring through the trunk confirms this car’s Rally Sport heritage. The rear quarters have the normal Camaro rust around the wheel lips. The good thing here is that you can see the extent of the damage. It has not been filled with bondo and primered over to conceal anything. I believe there has been some paint touch-ups made to the passenger side rear quarter at one time in the car’s life. This is the only area of the car that appears to be non-original paint. The floor pans are incredible... no rust whatsoever. Just take a look at the photos. The dash, cowl area, firewall, and other floor pans and trunk are excellent. They look brand new - like the day it left the factory. All body panels fit as they should. The stainless trim on the car is in excellent condition with the exception of the passenger rear wheel moulding. The bumpers are in very good condition and still retain a very nice appearance and shine. The rear bumper has a dent near the license bracket as shown in the photos. Another rare factory option on this ‘69 Camaro is the front and rear bumper guards (RPO V31 and V32). The vinyl top is medium brown (Code F) and is in great shape with only a slight curling with very slight imperfections. It does not appear there are any major rust issues like you see on some vinyl top cars. INTERIOR The standard medium green interior (Code 723) is a true time capsule showing minimal wear. The carpet has slight fading across the transmission tunnel and a hole about the size of a baseball on the driver’s side. It looks like wear from the driver’s heel on the gas pedal over the years. This is a column shift car without the center console. The RS steering wheel has a couple of cracks around the rim and near the horn buttons, but is otherwise really nice. The horn and heat/fan controls work with no problems. There is a small tear on the passenger door panel near the bottom. The original padded dash looks good, but is beginning to curl from exposure to the sun over the years. The headliner is perfect with no tears or rips whatsoever. The rear shelf tray is faded and stained and will need replaced; however it has not been cut for aftermarket speakers. The gauge faces and brightwork is near perfect, and the original gauges function accurately. RPO DESCRIPTION FOR THIS CAR AS1 - Belts, front shoulder A01 - Glass, Soft Ray tinted B93 - Guards, door edge CE1 - Headlight washers (RS only) D96 - Striping, fender (RS with Style Trim) G80 - Axle, Positraction (10 bolt 2.73 ratio) M35 - Transmission, Powerglide N44 - Steering, Special, includes quick ratio box T60 - Battery, Heavy Duty (long gone) U63 - Radio, pushbutton AM V31 - Guard, front bumper V32 - Guard, rear bumper Z21 - Style Trim Group Z22 - Rally Sport Package ELECTRICAL The electrical items and systems in the car all function as new. Headlights, brake lights, Rally Sport reverse lights, hazard lights, courtesy light, and warning lights all function properly. The horn, heater controls and fan switch, fan motor, and wipers function correctly also. The original Delco AM radio doesn’t work, but I haven’t tried to fix it. The wiper switch is loose in the bezel and needs fixed. The switch works fine, you just have to line it up in the bezel, then turn it on. Easy fix, but I just don’t have the time to take care of it. The original fuel gauge still functions very accurately. A new starter was installed back in the spring of this year. NON- ORIGINAL Non-original items on the car include the 15" x 7" Rally Wheels with almost new 235/70/15 BFGoodrich Radial TA’s on the rear, and very good 215/70/15 Uniroyals on the front. I still have the original 14" steel wheels and bias-ply tires that go with the car. The battery has been replaced, as has the radiator, water pump, starter, belts and hoses. The radio antenna is not original to the car. The factory muffler was replaced with dual Flowmasters with stainless steel pipe from the exhaust manifolds to the rear of the car. It really sounds great. IN SUMMARY I’m sorry for the small novel. I have tried to give you an honest description of this car. Check out my feedback. I respect the fact you are buying a big ticket item sight unseen. I want you to know every detail about this car in order for you to bid with confidence. I truly have described this car to the best of my ability with full disclosure in mind. This unrestored classic would be a great car for any muscle car enthusiast. Though not perfect, this has to be one of the nicest, virtually untouched Camaros you will ever find. Period. Fly in, and drive it home. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it anywhere. Although I am not an expert in the field of Camaros, I was 17 years old when I bought my first 1967 RS/SS Camaro new. I was 19 when the 1969 Camaro was new, so I know original when I see it. Just look at the photos. When was the last time you had the opportunity to buy an original documented 1969 Rally Sport Camaro in an extremely rare color combination? The car really should be seen in person to fully appreciate it. I encourage you to come and see it for yourself.
