The Star Chief was Pontiac's most prestigious model from 1954 through 1957 and is absolutely an amazing machine. This beauty is powered by a peppy 287 cu in Strato Streak V8 engine and smooth-shifting Hydramatic transmission. 1955 was the first year that Pontiac introduced overhead valves for their engines. The 1950's was an era when each automobile had its own distinct character and a look that we call today...classic. In 1955 Pontiac followed suit with a beautifully re-styled version of its premier showcase model - the Star Chief. The car's design included striking, but restrained chrome, with two sets flanking the Pontiac name and rakishly running the length of the hood. These "silver streaks" had long been a Pontiac styling landmark with an illuminated Chief mascot at the head of a jetliner hood ornament that is distinctively Pontiac.
