The 1968 Mustang 428 Cobra Jet At mid-model year 1968, the Mustang's 427 option was retired in favor of Ford's new 428 Cobra Jet, a huskier big-block with vacuum-actuated ram-air hood scoop. For drag racing and insurance purposes, it was advertised at 335 horsepower on 10.7:1 compression, but was doubtless much stronger. A quarter-mile zip of 13.56 seconds at a trap speed of 106.64 mph caused Hot Rod magazine to sing its praises. Original 1968.5 R code Ram Air 428 Cobra Jet Ford Mustang Fastback- 43,988 original miles. 1 of 1299 68.5 CJ mustangs ever built. Toploader close ratio 4-speed backed by a 4.30 Nodular case 31 spline locker 9" rear end as ordered from the factory Just finishing up a full rottisserie restoration, very few mild mods from stock.Nothing left untouched. FLAVOR00-NONE-0000-0000-000000000000 ; Originally special ordered via a Cincinnati DSO code. Optioned as stated on Marti report. Started with a clean virtually rust free car with original paint still intact - Car was inside/out media blasted to bare metal. It's Base coat / Clear Coat original Wimbeldon white, original stripe to spec,used a matching Red oxide underneath with correct overspray. Original firewall,inner fender wells,radiator support. Both vin #'s are intact on inner fender wells. Original fenders,hood,hood scoop,headlight buckets,upper support. The front lower valance panel and rear GT valance panels were replaced with a NOS Ford replacement.The originals were there but each had a few wrinkles in them that appeared to be rendered by the tow truck guy I imagine........ Cowl,rockers,door jams ,roof,doors,trunk lid,rear tail light panel all original. The lower rear GT valance is a NOS Ford replacement as well. Full qtrs and outer fenderwells replaced at the original Ford roof lines to avoid any issues. Floors installed but all seams /welds ground smooth so they can not be seen. Once all the paint and body work was completed the main tub was sent to a local restoration Cobra Jet Guy .He then began the process of the meticulous restoration. Each part plated or painted as required. First was assembly of drive train and electrical harness. The 428 CJ is a date code correct assembly that Performance Engine and Machine in Wisconsin built for me. Standard bore date code block gone through , date code correct heads,timing chain cover water pump, to match, mild port and polish. Bronze valve seats to run on pump gas with all the normal goodies on the inside done of course. So minor performance internal mods. Externally running a Ford Police Interceptor aluminum CJ intake although the date code correct cast iron one is included. Finned Cobra Jet Valve Covers rather than stock chromies. Completely rebuilt date code correct distributor but added an internal pertronix timing set up. Pony AA carb,No smog,No starter delay, but have s shield, snorkel, ram air unit with seal . No other mods. The close ratio top loader 4-speed was completely gone through , drive shaft rebuilt/balanced,Fresh N case 4.30 trac loc . Running stock Repo CJ exhaust manifolds through a Tony Branda Flowmaster exhaust system. Five matching new BFG's rather than repop bias plys bouncing on Gabriel shocks are the only other aftermarket improvements but a vast difference from stock. Interior is bone stock restored of course. The car went from resto shop for drive train, back to body shop for final body piece install and alignment and then back to resto shop for finish resto work like headliner, dash, body trim,etc. Interior is stock , with an original and refurbished 8k tac . It does have a fold down seat now installed as that's the way I received it. Complete professional refurb on original shifter, OEM carpet set, new dash pad, etc. Exterior looks nicer than new of course.I used date code correct new front/rear glass, original sides, Mostly NOS exterior trim used.Body is absolutely flawless. Only needs a few minor finishing interior touches-Need to install two small chrome clips that hold the Optional shoulder belts up out of the way.I have them but have not installed. "Lost" somewhere along the way is the PS rear 1" trim corner moulding piece. Easy replacement but have not located mine and I'm sure it's somewhere in my garage.....but as for now missing in action.Although all lights (even reverse and hazards) function. The turn signal cam switch needs replaced in the steering column. Pin pointed loss of signal from turn signal cam to first wire harness plug. Available through Dennis carpenter as a kit. All items are something a guy can do in an afternoon. The inner vin #'s dash tag , door tag are all intact. I have things from Marti like the buck tag,rear end tag, more original decals for show and such as well if you choose,etc. Lots of resto pics, paper work and receipts of course. Ready for somebody to start showing and enjoying........You can take it to the next level and add some of the original components that I chose to change or drive it , show it, enjoy it. It starts,runs,drives,smells as new.A real pleasure to drive and true Muscle Car in every sense......Extremely strong running.
