REGRETFUL SALE - "Time Capsule" 1963 Mercedes 300 SE Fabulous car and an amazing history too! Has been sitting in my garage since I purchased it in 2004 - I drove it for about a week after I bought it and then left it untouched gathering dust - My ultimate project that I never got around to!!! It was imported to the US by the owner in 1971 (a german doctor) who had it since new and rarely drove it. Last driven in 1983 and then garaged by his widow until I discovered it by chance in 2004 and bought it from her! VIRTUALLY UNTOUCHED SINCE 1983!!! Covered and garaged!!! UNBELIEVABLE The mileage is actually in KILOMETERS 59,985 original Genuine ordered factory handmade "houndstooth" seat coverings!! ORIGINAL TWO TONE BLACK & WHITE PAINT THE OVERALL CONDITION IS GOOD - really good in my opinion! Lenses, fins, engine, tires (whitewalls BTW), electrics, air all worked WELL!!! Some Surface rust but nothing serious! I never messed with it - I'm not a restorer - I'm a mechanic!!! I'm moving out of state and just can't take her with me. ANYWAYS - - - Call MATT on 502-418-7272 for more info or if you would like to come and see her in person!!! I really hope she goes to a wonderful home - would love to see her all spruced up! $1 AUCTION - LOW RESERVE - GOOD LUCK!!! Pictures are not great quality - sorry - the first one is when i first polished it up and drove it for a week in 2004 - the car is now packed in behind a truck in the back of my shop - dusty and sad!!. If I get enough interest, I'll get her out over the weekend and give her a wash AND post new pics! On Sep-27-10 at 09:12:53 PDT, seller added the following information: Hi everyone and thanks for all your questions and bids too!!! Sorry if i haven't got back to all of you yet - I have a business to run and am selling some other things on ebay too BUT I wanted to keep you all up to date with what's been happening... Firstly, I've pulled all the cars out that were blocking the 300 - and as you can see by the new pics, given it a quick wash down and now have access to it. We'll get her started up later today or early tomorrow and hopefully work out how to remove the old pics and get some new ones up - IN THE MEANTIME - here's what we've checked over so far AND maybe the answers to some of the more common questions... Body paint is in good condition - thick and still "beads" nicely when washed - a few nicks and surface rust spots but nothing nasty! Body is in great shape...no bumps or damage Glass is in great shape - seals look good, no cracks or scratches All the lenses and lights are in great condition - no smashes We have no service records but a few receipts from 1971 for tires and other old invoices ROOF paint is looking poor - especially arount the sunroof (which works GREAT!!!) paint "eggshelling" and rusty in some spots (surface again) ALL chrome strips are intact and in great condition Interior is fantastic condition - fabric is excellent with ZERO tears or rips Center console in rear and front is in excellent condition no oil leaks or any other leaks that we have discovered so far trunk is in great condition - paint is great, badges are great etc etc we have the front MERCEDES emblem - it's in the office where it's been for the past 6 years - a silent reminder of the project... BRAKES need some line work on the rear - from memory we plugged the lines cause the calipers had seized - I'll check that later... The battery is dead (but thanks for the question) the side mirror is actually on the front drivers fender - (this seems to be of some importance???) OK so...back to work - I'll update as we go (and have time) Thanks!!!!! Matt THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR BIDS - - - On Sep-27-10 at 09:42:04 PDT, seller added the following information: Hi once again EBAY fans!!! I've been chatting to an ebay person for the past 15 minutes - seems I cannot remove the old photos and I only have 2 more spots left - I'll save these for later! If anyone has SPECIFIC and REASONABLE photo requests please email me and I'll try to get them asap and email them! Please also understand that I'm getting a crazy amount of calls about this - Again I apologize if I don't get back to you straight away! GOOD LUCK and ENJOY !!!On Sep-27-10 at 12:19:12 PDT, seller added the following information: Just had a good basic clean up of the interior - on closer inspection the houndstooth fabric is in EXCELLENT condition - NO rips, tears or wear...The seats are ridiculously comfortable and don't have any spring problems. The HEADLINER is mildly patchy-dirty (original color is a fawny cream) AGAIN...no rips or tears though! The carpet is a burgandy color and in great shape too. All the door handles and locks etc are there, the wood is a beautiful oaky, woody, color (what??) . The windcreen wipers work, the heater fan works, the interior lights work including the little one above the rear view mirror...Indicators work, the dash is in good shape with no bits falling off - the cigarette lighter is there, the passenger glove compartment light works, the text/paint on the gauges/speedo are crisp and clean - the ashtray has been used at some stage but is in good condition - the floor switches work, the engine warning/starting lights work.. NOW THE BAD!!!! - The radio (BLAUPUNKT) doesn't seem to work - I'll check fuses later but no sound and i have to find how to turn it on..??? - There is a 4 inch CRACK in the dash next to the speedo...the rest of the dash is in GREAT shape except for this crack. The drivers door map pocket elastic is broken so it doesn't shut properly, there is some light surface rusting on the chrome indicator and shifting levers (the Steering wheel is in excellent shape) ummm that's about the worst of it - Not much at all Interior is amazingly good for the age! I'll get back to you all later!!! On Sep-27-10 at 14:14:37 PDT, seller added the following information: WAAAHHAAAYYYY!!! - She runs GREAT!!! Just spent 15 minutes on the engine - cleaned out the fuses, coaxed the Fuel pump into action and VROOM VROOM - MAGNIFICENT!!! NO SMOKE - AIR LINES pressurised and suspension restored with no apparant leaks!!! All 6 cylinders running perfectly - GREAT deep gurgling beasty man-sound!!! SOUNDS FANTASTIC! Steering good, no oil leaks, no lines burst, no coolant leaks!!! We'll take her for a spin tomorrow and get her on the hoist to check for undercarriage rust and the rear brakes! Also noticed a few more things - there is some water staining around the inside of the rear window on the headliner material, seals may be worn or have been at some stage. The Mechanical sunroof works well and has no rust around the opening. The tires are pumped up and are holding air with no apparent leaks also, the headlights and indicators all work but the switch mechanisim has issues... We'll keep u up-to-date!! Thanks for Watching!!! On Sep-28-10 at 07:48:02 PDT, seller added the following information: Good morning faithful "Heckflosse" fans!!! Ok so before work today we started her up again and had a good look under the car (not on the hoist yet). NO oil leaks, Tire pressure held overnight, air suspension held; possibly lower in the passenger rear wheel but minor - The muffler has a reasonably large hole in it and again there is some rust in the very bottom of the fender panels but surprisingly NO major rust spots where it has eaten through! There are patches on the rear bumpers where the chrome has flaked off and rust is visible on close inspection but certainly NO major rust again! Surface rusting is visible on the rear of the car in-between the two chrome bumpers and the TRUNK is in excellent condition with NO rusting at all! - The licence plate cover still has the tire pressure info on the inside and the filler and fuel cap are completely without rust! - The Floor pans and subframe are in really good condition, solid and rust-free except for some minor surface rust again! OH...By the way...Most of the calls I'm getting are about the RESERVE price! - I really have to focus on work and can't spend all day on the phone so... RESERVE HAS BEEN LOWERED!!! GOOD LUCK - GOOD BIDDING - ENJOY!!! On Sep-28-10 at 08:20:39 PDT, seller added the following information: Just a quick note - I've had some info that the VIN number listed is actually the body number! Apologies! Thanks to a fintail expert...we've located the actual VIN no from the engine bay: Appears to be 112014 - 12 - 002557 (hard to read but we think this is correct) Sorry for the confusion! On Sep-28-10 at 08:46:03 PDT, seller added the following information: Ho humm - still have reserve questions!!! Reserve is SOOOO close - the price of a McDonalds Value Meal(tm) - ohhhh I'm hungry now!On Sep-28-10 at 13:36:30 PDT, seller added the following information: Ok so we've had some questions about the VIN number and after a bit of rushing about we've verified that the Actual VIN number as stated on the TITLE is : 112014-12-002657 which is (almost) the same as the one I listed earlier! My mistake - on closer inspection the 002557 IS ACTUALLY 002657! - As I mentioned before it was difficult to read!!! BUT NOW ALL VERIFIED AND FINALIZED ABOVE NUMBER IS CORRECT !!! - Thanks for all your input!!! VIN PICTURE UPLOADED FOR YOUR PLEASURE!!On Sep-30-10 at 08:30:53 PDT, seller added the following information: Hello again everyone!!! We've been busy and haven't had lots of time to update so apologies! - Thankyou to all those who have called with questions, advice and concerns. We've had a lot of similar questions so I'll try and answer most of them now... I'm not a restorer or dealer- I am a mechanic usually working on performance street cars and servicing imported (to the USA) Japanese, European and "rockcrawling" 4WD trucks...mccormickmotorsports.com - I'm Matt Mccormick, It's MY shop! My feeling about the Houndstooth upholstery is that it is genuine and true to the age of then car - The workmanship is excellent. Seamless with the rest of the interior! The carpets, mats and back of the seats are also in excellent condition although the photos don't really reflect this (sorry - didn't realize that we couldn't change photos mid auction!) I also had some encouraging conversations with members of the "heckflosse" internet forums a few years ago who said that a buyer in the 1960's could order a range of fabrics to personalize the car. Finally...the original owners' widow said that the car "had not changed since germany" The lights all work but the connector has been disconnected from the back of the "key" switch on the dash- It was like this when we got it - I've got big hands and haven't bothered to mess with it! THE CAR WILL SELL AT AUCTION- I've decided not to pull the listing PURELY to edit pictures or change the international bidding status, this is a simple courtesy to all the people that have been bidding, watching and involved - My apologies to International bidders but if you really want it... I'm sure you have friends here to bid on your behalf! We'll help with any shipping logistics that you can arrange. The car starts perfectly EVERY time since cleaning the fuses. The passenger-rear suspension drops slightly when left overnight The trunk has a sticker on the inside with jacking instructions and has an old spare tire that is mostly white and an old (original) screw-type jack . The "mileage" appears to be original - The owners widow (who has now passed away too), said that it was driven locally in Germany and only used rarely in the USA up until 1983 and then sat dormant for 20 years or so. The engine bay is dusty (the hood was open for over a year) but all components appear to be original and look good for the era. There is a possibility that it has actually clicked over to 159k but I'm not finding the usual signs... For those of you using a VIN search on the internet - - - the car is pre 1981 so it's not listed here in the USA - there is NO VIN plate under the windscreen or in the DOOR - - - Read the above comments for the VIN no. SO...GOOD LUCK and I'll post the LAST picture Today!!!
