Vehicle Detail

No reserve! Description: 1973 VW Thing This is a running car that won't take too much money or time to finish. It was originally retailed in Oklahoma in 3/74. It is still on an Oklahoma title in the name of the first owner. I acquired it in 2002 & never re-titled or registered it (all properly signed off). It starts easily & runs well. I've done the following work: * replaced convertible top with a 'Thing Shop' top in '03... * added black carpet kit from 'Thing Shop' in '03 * had the carb overhauled in '10...(added Fram fuel filter & lines) * had the fuel tank cleaned inside & out & coated interior with Por-7 in '10...(tank wasn't too corroded, just gummed up) * had the steel fuel line unplugged (almost solid with old fuel) & thoroughly cleaned out in '10... * replaced r.f. wheel brake cylinder (had broken valve) in '10... * brakes seem to leak down after bleeding them...may not be bleeding them correctly... The body is solid & quite original. It has some pan corrosion (underneath the battery & r.r pass. seat) & a couple spots on the lower body. The very rare & desirable, gas heater, is in place & looks to be very complete (untested). Prior body damage shows in the right front, where the fender has been repainted (on the car) & inside the tire compartment where the bottom metal is still slightly bent (see photos). The paint is all original & still shines. There are dents & dings. The hood has some hail damage. The r.r. & l.f. fenders have dents. The bumpers have been painted with epoxy primer. The top installation has not been completed. The material was lightly glued to the header bow, but the metal edge strip & compression rivets were never installed. (strip & rivets come in a bag) Here is a detailed look @ the Thing: * tires are old & weathered 205/75/14 studded m+s... * 4 original 14" steel wheels (no spare)...some clips are broken off that retain center caps...(clips come in a bag)...missing 1 chrome center cap... * brake shoes have ++ life, new r.f. wheel cylinder in '10...brakes work...e-brake works... * steering/suspension seem to be good... * floor pan rusted through under battery & on opposite side...very fixable... * small body corrosion just ahead of rear fenders... * shocks may be originals... * front & rear lenses have a lot of tiny cracks... * doors swing freely...need latches adjusted... * 2 chromed outside mirrors are complete & glass is good... * hood & engine lid fit body normally...are extremely nice inside...props for both are still in place...hood latches...no engine lid latch receptacle, as it has been removed... * windshield is free of chips...lays down for wind in your face driving...sun visors are originals & in good shape... * dash plastic surrounds & grab handle are all pretty good... * windshield wipers are mostly there...missing blade on pass side...linkage, wiring & switch are intact... * top frame has been cleaned/painted...not rusted out... * top canvas has 2 small tears at rear on the top...very fixable from inside... * top canvas is still pliable...has been covered... * no top hold-down straps, etc... * no side curtains/frames... * both top bow latches have been broken & repaired...one is broken again (fix or replace)... * has the gas heater in place (untested)... * seats have been recovered in cloth & vinyl...seat tracks are operational... * no glove box lid... * radio wasn't in it when I acquired the Thing... * engine code: DO911390, which is a 34 h.p. 1200 from 1971... not the original engine... * engine has aftermarket headers (no muffler)... * engine compartment appears to be missing some of the original tinwork & the exhaust system... * electric fuel pump instead of mechanical... * Fram fuel filter & fresh fuel lines leading to the in-body steel line... * silicone spark plug wires... * overhauled Solex pict 2 carb... * original vehicle i.d. plate still in place... * windshield washer, decal, cap & line still in place...(untested) * warning & i.d. stickers still in place... * original jack, handle & lug wrench are there... * original steering wheel, turn signal stalk & keyed switch are in place... * speedometer shows 61,704 miles... * the small dash panel to the right of the speedo has been replaced...hazard switch is resting in the hole...needs to be fitted...hazard lights work... * running lights don't come on...haven't looked to see why...wiring is all intact & not cut up...have loose wires in engine compartment & behind dash panel...fuel gauge wire not hooked up to fuel tank sender... * glove box light comes on automatically when you rotate the light cover...(works) * transaxle shifts normally...all gears working...clutch feels just like other VWs... * original seat belts are all in place...some corrosion on steel buckles... * rear seats are complete...they even lay forward, creating a semi-flat floor for stuff... I may have missed something, but you probably have more detail than if you saw it in person. Do plan on trailering it. Measurements: Condition: used... No reserve! Thanks for looking & bidding.
