NO RESERVE AUCTION !!! ATTENTION ALFISTIS AND WANNA-BE ONES... I have finally accepted the fact that my Alfa days are behind me. Sad but true. After owning, driving and loving 4 Alfas over the past 20 years or so, I have gone to the dark side and purchased some German iron. Not one, but two. Here's my story: Back in the late sixties, my brother owned a '67 VW. I learned to drive a stick in that car. He also owned a Porsche C coupe which, incidentally, I blew up one night back in NYC when I drove the number one rod through the block. At about this time, I was begging my father to buy me a VW bus. Now my dad was a WW II vet who served with the 4th Marine Division. He made the beach landings on Saipan, Tinian (the island that the Marines took so that the Enola Gay could deliver a package to Hiroshima), Roi-Namur and the biggie, Iwo Jima. He told me once that the beach at Iwo Jima reminded him of what hell would look like; my father was a religious kind of guy. He was in the signal corp and spent the war with HQ battalion stringing communication wire to the front lines while dodging Japanese sniper target practice. He told me that all the while he never thought about dying, just whether or not it would hurt when it happened. In the early '60's a VW bus to my dad represented pot-smoking hippies, sex and revolution. He referred to some of my generation as "doing what they gonna do" and "all hopped up on goof balls." So you get the picture.....there was no VW bus for me. Fast forward about 40 years. My parents are gone now, but the memories are all good. They're generation was truly the "greatest." So while my latest Alfa was lazily awaiting some restoration work, a lightly used 40th Anniversary 996 came across my radar and I bought it, quickly followed by a '76 VW bay window camper. There you have it. After all these years my two most cherished memories - my brother's Porsche and the VW bus - have simply taken over and my Alfa mojo is gone. I will love the Alfas forever, but for now I pass one on to another. O.K., enough already, back to this auction. This is my fourth Alfa and they were and are all special. However, Alfa ownership is not for the feint of heart. But since you are here, I imagine that you know this already. If you need permission to buy this car from your girlfriend, wife, significant other, or life-partner, please do it before bidding. Once you bid, and if you are the high bidder it's yours; there will be no take-backs and no whining. This is an Alfa Romeo, you will have plenty of time during your ownership to complain and whine. Enough said! This Alfa is all original to the best of my knowledge, from mechanicals to interior. It is not chopped up or disfigured in any way. It is 99.9% dry and rust free. I patched two spots of rust under the side valance by the front wheels. This was caused by wet leaves and dirt accumulating over the years. Both wheel wells have been removed to clean. It also has several small, really small spots of superficial rust on the hood area. I was eventually going to repaint the car and take care of it then. As far as I know, it has spent it's whole life in California. I bought it on EBay in '05 in Bakerfield, CA. and drove it home to Los Angeles. It came with personal plates "I EAT BMW," however, I settled for less attention and got new plates when registering it. I still have one of the plates that you are welcome to have. Over the past 5 years the car was serviced by "Ewe" at Omega Motorsports in Culver City, California. He worked on my others as well. Ewe is a European factory-trained Alfa mechanic and a great guy. So what do you get? ASSETS strong engine (accelarates in all gears and will pull in 5th gear at 80 mph) smooth transmission (although 2nd gear synchro was replaced it will grind when cold) 4 new tires new Magnecor spark plug wires recent oil change and tune up including Bosch plugs, rotor and cap air conditioner (PO put in Sanden compressor which operates, but system is not cold.) new dash cover new turn signal "Dino" steering wheel new clutch slave cylinder new water pump new radiator fan (it has two, one was replaced.) spare tire on original "Campy" rim Gotti wheels (they could use a polish or refinish. They are rare !!) Anza exhaust rear bumper has been modified to sit closer to body like the European version. sunroof operates perfectly with no leaks at all and even has the bezel around the handle (most are broken after so many years) new battery (with theft protection connection) currently registered in California till April 2011 SHORTCOMINGS paint (although you can actually get a decent shine with elbow grease, orbital polisher and Turtle Wax compound. It appears that the car was repainted once in the past in the original Alfa red without a clear coat. The paint is really dull, and some of the photos make the car look great, because I just washed it. interior is all there but has the usual splits and wear on the driver's bolster some badging is faded and will need replacement radio in the car has stopped working and was removed. The speakers front and rear remain. The space for the radio is intact and not hacked up so that you can put whatever unit you desire the engine has a small leak that will leave a mark but it's not much I will not provide a current smog certificate for California buyers; I am sure it will pass smog again, I'm just not in the mood to do it. So, please do not bid if this is a deal breaker. Remember, no complaining and no whining if you are the high bidder EXTRA STUFF Winning bidder will receive the following: Alfa Romeo jacket (approx. size 42) Bought on EBay for $75 or thereabouts. Worn maybe 2-3 times. I don't smoke, I don't have pets and I didn't hang around smelly people when I wore it Alfa Romeo repair manual. This is the factory manual. It's great Alfa Romeo buyer's guide Alfa Romeo Owner's Bible. Brand new. Value $30 Operator's manual (1981 version) Alfa Romeo Car Disc CD (may need updated version since this is for older Windows application. Have had this for years) Official Alfa Romeo flat rate manual. Good luck and thanks for your interest! ENDING REMARKS If you have any questions, please ask before bidding. I am going to assume that you know what these cars are all about and expect to work on it now and in the future. This was a daily driver for me for awhile, and although it has not seen too much of the highway lately, it could be a daily car for someone else. Be reminded, however, that the car is 26 years old and things don't last forever. However, if you pay attention to it, it will reward you with lots of fun driving. I just spent almost $5K for a clutch, Michelin Pilot tires and a short shifter on my Porsche. You can own this car for a lot less.
