The Carrera 3.0 was a limited production model and was only available for the ’76-‘77 model years. It was not sold in the U.S. Only 2564 Carrera 3.0 coupes were produced. The car was introduced the same year as the Turbo and shares basically the same motor, just has no turbo. It also has wider, flared fenders which the U.S. spec 911S’s didn’t get. The Carrera 3.0 preceded the 911 SC, but had at least 20 more horsepower and as a result, was quicker. It was originally Grand Prix White, but has been Guards Red for the time I’ve owned the car. About 6 years ago, it received a bare metal basecoat/clearcoat repaint (except for the roof which was sanded down to the primer coat and then painted). The paint has some stone chips and is not perfect, but is very straight and very flat. I tried to take photos of the chips but they don’t really show up well with my modest camera. Also, there are a couple of imperfections under the clearcoat that you can’t see in the photos. Regardless, it looks really good. After the painting, the window and door gaskets, bumper trim, etc. were all replaced during reassembly. It also received a new windshield. The interior is tan leather in good condition, again, no rips or tears, but showing some wear. Same for the carpet. There is no rot in the car and the ‘tub’ is solid, probably in part because these cars were galvanized by the factory. It has the optional 16” Fuchs in the 7” and 8” widths (shod with Dunlop SP Sport 8000’s, P205/55 ZR16 in front and P225/50 ZR16 in the rear) which I think really enhance the looks of the car. Being a Euro model, it has H4 headlights as well as the amber turn signal lenses. Other features include a power sunroof and A/C (much of which has been removed – don’t need it in Vermont – but I still have all the parts. A/C compressor needs to be rebuilt or replaced). The car has the usual upgrades including pop-off valve, chain tensioners, head studs, shock tower brace and turbo tie-rod ends. The factory provided ‘trombone’ oil cooler was replaced with a Terbatrol oil cooler with manually controlled fan – although it never gets hot enough to use it. At about 95,000 miles, the transaxle was rebuilt and the clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing and pilot bearing were replaced. It is my understanding that this particular car was imported to New Hampshire from Europe sometime in the 80’s. Being a ‘gray market’ import, it was issued the New Hampshire VIN# NH005911. The car then moved to Connecticut and was issued a title there using the New Hampshire VIN. I live in Vermont, a non-title state for older cars, and I registered the car using the original Porsche VIN. I do still have the Connecticut title. I do not have any copies of any federalization paperwork, so I can’t speak to that. Some items that could use attention: - A/C is not installed as noted above – bad compressor. - Headlight washer pump needs to be replaced. - Windshield washer pump is new but needs to be hooked up (I never drive it in bad weather, so I never bothered). - The rear window defroster stopped working after the window was re-installed after the repaint – probably the wire connections? - The car never had the original fog lights while I’ve owned it. It looks better without them anyway, I think. This is a fun car, rare and collectible, but is not a show car. Drive it and enjoy it. Inspections encouraged.
