FOR SALE: ****Low Reserve!**** 1972 Mercedes-Benz 280SEL 4.5 Litre. CLEAN title in hand, current CA-registration for the summer!! Can ship over seas. Description: Sliding on to firm MB-Tex seats, hands resting on the large, high steering wheel, and being surrounded by the essence of pure class from the wood dash and sparkling chrome trimming, really sets the mood for driving one of Mercedes-Benz' luxury cars. The promise of fine motoring is kept by these large but nimble sedans that handle well and stop even better. The Mercedes Benz 280's performance with the 2.8-liter six was certainly adequate, but not up to standard for luxury sedans and rather "busy-sounding", besides. This plagued Mercedes Benz until 1970 when they offered a new 3.5-litre SOHC V-8, but the even more powerful release of the 4.5-litre engine really put the 280 SEL on the map. The 4.5-litre version of the car and a new 3-speed automatic transmission, the same combination used in the U.S. version of the 350SL, is standard in the 280SEL. The 4.5 engine offers more power, increased stroke, a more smooth and even quiet drive. Road and track says the engine "really transforms the car". Even on a completely cold start, the engine kicks right in and NO SMOKE is visible from the tail pipes. The car runs and drives unbelievably well, and its age does not show in its driveability or acceleration. With intermittent induction-manifold injection, four bearing upper head camshaft and thermostat controlled cooling, you can count on a safe journey home. The oil pressure remains high as Mercedes should. Brakes, steering, and suspension all work well. That L on the end of the SEL means long; four more inches of wheelbase than the 280SE. The result is a very noticeable difference in legroom between the two models. Nearly any size or shape driver can be accommodated by the multi-adjustable seat. It goes up and down, backward and forward; the back rest is adjustable and so is the head restraint. There is even a separate armrest. A high seating position, high steering wheel and instrument cluster give the driver a commanding driving position. New riders are, at first anyway, put off by the firm Mercedes seats, but after several hours of traveling these same people are still comfortable—they're beginning to know what Mercedes cars are all about. All of the pictures taken were done in my driveway or neighborhood, where parking was available, using only the sun for lighting. While I didn't use any professional photography strategies or equipment, its beauty is still clear from my pictures.
