Vehicle Detail

This auction is for a 1974 Triumph TR6 convertible. We (Kory Klassics) are selling this car for its current owner of years. He uses this car as his daily driver and main mode of transportation. This car was built in May of 1974, according to the ID plate on the door jamb. This car is in very good condition, 7.5-8/10, having had what looks like a complete restoration in 97-98, judging from the 2” thick packet of receipts. It presents beautifully. It looks like it was sympathetic to originality, except for an aftermarket Alpine radio. It shows 94,850 miles on it as of 08-04-2010. There is no record of whether the speedometer was rolled to zero at the time of the restoration or if that is the original mileage. The engine starts right up and idles smoothly with an even burble. This engine is 152cu, twin Stromberg carbs, 6 cylinders. It has had regular maintenance over the years, obvious from how clean it is inside, although there are no receipts to prove that it has had its oil changes. It does not overheat, accelerates strongly and smoothly. Looking through the receipts, it was completely rebuilt with standard pistons and .010 over rods and mains. It had all the usual replacements plus valve, seats, camshaft (standard), and springs. It is a cold-blooded car, which needs to warm up for a minute before the choke can be released and driven. The 4 speed transmission shifts smoothly and runs quietly with no whining or grinding noises. It does not have overdrive, despite the plate on the rear decklid. My guess is that they replaced the overdrive unit with a non overdrive at the time of the restoration. We do not have the original transmission. The newer clutch is heavy like most TR6s and uptake is smooth with no judders. This car does not have air conditioning. The rear end is quiet with no growls or other unusual noises, and does not suffer the ‘clunk’ from failing frame members of differential mounts. Driving the car there are no squeaks or rattles from the body or the exhaust. All in all, the drive train is excellent, despite being 12 years old. The bodywork is straight with no majour waves or dents in it. Paint colour code is 82. The paint is nice and glossy smooth. The body panels line up very nicely, doors open and close easily without dragging on the jamb, indicating a solid frame. The doors do have a ¼” gap at the rear between the door and body and 5/16” at the top. The trunk opens and closes easily, and the bonnet release is very easy to operate (unusually for a TR6). It has had the safety catch removed from the hood for easier opening. Underneath the car there is no rust, and everything looks to be very solid. Going by the receipts, we would say this was a body off restoration. There are receipts for a body mount kit, chassis paint, body paint, and undercoating. There is no white overspray on anything underneath the car. Shocks and suspension rubbers also look to have been replaced. The bad spots with the paintwork are: - At the top trailing edges of the boot lid there are some bubbles forming underneath the paintwork (please see pictures). - The passenger’s side door has a small bubble at the front and one at the rear bottom corner - The driver’s door on the dogleg there are a couple bubbles forming. - There is one small ding just above and behind the right rear wheel arch, which is very shallow and hard to see. - There are a couple stress cracks in the paintwork on close inspection at the seams near the rear cowl, but nothing majour. - The driver’s door does stick out a little bit at the bottom of the jamb. The sills and other body panels all look great, with no evidence near the windshield, headlights, trunk floor, floor pans, or other usual rust-prone areas. Everything works, including the horn, heater, wipers, lights, and rheostat. All the dash lights and other instruments work fine. There are no receipts indicating that the gauges were rebuilt, so as far as we know, they’re original. The wiring is in great shape- all the flashers and voltage stabilizers etc were replaced at the time of restoration. It has a rebuilt altenator (12 years rebuilt). Interior colour code is #33. Carpets, dashboard, vinyls, and other interior pieces are in great condition. Trunk carpet is also in great condition. Door panels are like new. The only majour drawback with the interior is that the driver’s seat foam has pretty much disintegrated. For this car to be driven alot (in my opinion) it would need to have the seats re-foamed, and the tan vinyl Robbins top is still in great shape. The top folds up and down smoothly and the windows do not have any kinks in them or majour scratches. There is a rust coloured spot right in the middle of the rear window though. The wheels are beautiful with nice beauty rings and good condition center caps. It has newer Yokohoma tires on it. We are happy to assist in shipping this Triumph whereever need be and welcome you to look at it before purchasing. This TR6 is a very nice older restoration that while it may not win any shows in its current state, is extremely nice to drive and be in. It is currently in our showroom where it keeps company with an MGA, an XK-140, 442, 308GTSi, and some other British cars. If you have any further questions or would like more detail and specific pictures, we will be happy to accommodate your request by calling me directly at 205.902.6725, ask for Gavin. You may also call Paul at 205.699.3344. Just as an FYI, the last time this car was in for service, on 3/31/10, it received new clutch slave and master cylinders, brake fluid flush, and had a new radiator put in, for $633.37.On Aug-09-10 at 09:53:45 PDT, seller added the following information: Had several question concerning the underside of this car. It is clean, straight solid frame. We were looking around underneath of it again this morning, and wondering if possibly the body mounts/shims got mixed up in the resto resuilting in a 'hump' in the center of the car. Its almost like the trunk isn't high enough up off the frame. Either way, frame is very solid. It doesn't look like the sills have been repalced; they are covered in the original looking Waxoyl stuff. It has a couple slow leaks, differential pinion, rear transmission, washer at the end of the cartridge oil filter, and the front timing cover/crankseal. All are slow leaks; it doesn't leave drops on the floor in our showroom after sitting the weekend on it. It has a Heritage registry stsicker on the windshield, but I cannot find any documentation to go with it.
