Vehicle Detail
This is a relisting of the 1991 850 CSI replica. The auction has been changed to "No Reserve" and the Buy Now price lowered from $30,000.00 to $19,500.00. Please note payment calls for wire transfer in 3 days, subject to arrangement for deliver of the title. Based on questions received during the original posting, a supplement was prepared as shown below in the bold type. The orignal listing is also shown below. Supplemental information: I have had a number of requests for additional interior pictures. I have added a couple that I could find in my files. The interior leather and carpet are in excellent shape. It was Leatheriqued when installed. Also there wasn't any discussion of problems in the original listing. Mechanically the car is sound. I have driven it approxiamtely 10,000 miles since the engine swap without any mechanical problems. Cosmetically there are a few items that need to be addressed. When the interior was swapped, the headliner and rear deck cover were also replaced. The headliner is ok but the material for the rear deck faded badly and needs to be replaced. The discolorization can be seen in the photo next to the Vette. Also, when the interior was swapped some of the “clips” holding the interior light and liner to the rear columns broke. These two pieces need to be reattached. As can be seen in the console shot, a placeholder for some optional switch is missing. The car has been clayed twice and also had attention by a “ding doctor”. However, there is one ding above the rear wheel, as shown in the enclosed picture that needs to be removed. Further, there is a 4-6 inch scratch in the front fender, picked up while at Greg K’s shop, that needs to be repaired. Finally, the sun roof has a small rust spot. Being an absentee owner made correcting all the small items challenging. There’s no curb rash and with these small items corrected I would put it in any BMW event corral. Original listing information: This car, a 1991 850i 6spd with about 90,000 mile (when acquired, currently 106,000) was purchased in December of 2003. I believe it has had at least three owners – myself, the person before me for 2 years and I was told the sales manager of BMW San Francisco before that. I can believe the San Francisco location because when I drove it to Las Vegas for Christmas in 2003 it was clear the clutch was a problem, probably from the time it spent in the streets of SF. I have lived in Indonesia since 1987 and this was always going to be an absentee ownership situation. Based on prior research, I determined that I would drop the car off in Huntington Beach and have Evosport install the clutch. This lead to long conversations on how to improve the performance and eventually to Mr. Ed Raether (M Wrench) who actually found and helped arrange the purchase of the CSI engine. Even with the help of Jud (the 8 Board resident history expert), it was never determined which of the 227 CSIs the engine was sourced. It was advertised as having approximately 25,000 miles which would mean about 35,000 miles now. I do know that when I took it to the Inspection station to the emissions test I was counseled to not mention the fact the engine had been swapped. So the attendant dialed in a 1991 850i with 100,000 miles. After the test he said it performed like a state of the art new car in the emissions test. A good example of what BMW Motorsports does with an engine and the quality of the swap. Anyway, Evosport performed the installation. For the Otoupaliks, Brad the owner and Bob (Brad’s father), this was the first 8 they had been involved with in a major way. I know Ken, the master mechanic, and the rest of the gang worked much more than the billed time to make this unique transplant work correctly. In addition to the basic engine swap, since the engine had been opened for inspection, the intakes were honed and powder coated; replaced (or secured) the banjo bolts (a know potential problem with the engine); replaced all belts, hoses, gaskets, seals, “o” rings and filters; replaced the window washer container and system; the radiator; the batteries; fluids (Red Line); and the water pump. In addition, a SPEC Stage 2 clutch; a custom short shifter, the CSI body kit, GE 9011 and 9012 bulbs; H&R Sport springs; Bilstein Sport shocks; and 14” Brembos all around were added. The Brembos included stainless steel brake lines and drilled rotors. The rear installation is not standard from Brembo and Evosport was instrumental in arranging the custom installation. The 14” Brembos with the 19” Hartge Classics are the most unique and best physical feature of the car. Also acquired along the way were: 1. A Blanton 3.15 LSD from, and installed by, M Wrench. 2. K Bars - second generation adjustable sway bars installed by Greg K himself. 3. A BMW lighted, leather shift knob and boot. 4. Custom pedals – accelerator, clutch, brake and dead man. 5. A custom Borla exhaust system that creates a very nice sound. 6. Audio system (Blaupunkt) from, and installed by Frys. 7. Sirrus connection. 8. Car cover. 9. Tool box with a reasonable amount of basic tools. 10. Hartge Classics 19” with Michelin Sport Pilots (15,000 miles). 11. Various cleaning materials and tie downs. 12. Trickle charger and jumper cables. 13. Radar detector (not built in) from Frys that works well. Further, the car originally came with a Parchment interior. I chose to change this to black. The replacement interior came from a 1994 with black Buffalo leather that Wuffer was parting out. With very modest help from me, Wuffer removed, fabricated and installed the new interior to factory standard. The car attended the 2004 and 2005 Concorso Italiano and Monterey Historics where it attracted its share of attention in the BMW corrals. The 8 was also featured as either October or December in the Roadfly 8 Board 8 calendar (2005) based on selection by the board membership. During my last trip to the USA, some two years ago, the a/c compressor went out. In the limited time, we managed to replace it with a new model (134) but there is some conversion needed to make the compressor work in the 8 system (BMW quit carrying the OEM model for the 8). For the past two years the 8 has sat under cover in controlled storage at Stored Inside in Milpitas, Ca. It is exercised once a month and is connected to a trickle charger. Prior to my last use of the 8, the car was inspected by M Wrench. I don’t have current pictures but a collection of photos (including three taken during the last drive), emissions test and the dyno chart are shown. Many people on the Roadfly 8 board (http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/bmw/bmw-8-series-e31/) know 8s and a few know this particular car and can answer questions as well as myself, of course. The maintenance records on the car are sketchy and begin in 2000. I have receipts from Evosport for $28,000+ (9 pages) that document the installation of the CSI engine; the replacement of the hoses, filters, belts, etc.; and the modifications added.
