Vehicle Detail
If your are looking at Packard sites then you already know what a rare 2 door 1948 coupe is. This is a 36,000 mile " Barn Find". In 1948 our young men were coming home from WWII, to start their lives with their new families, new homes purchased and new American cars. This is a 36,452 miles Packard stored from 1970’s . Packard is / was an icon, a pinnacle of luxury, representing the top of automotive excellence of its time. American iron, American design, American built. Yes, a 1948 Packard did cost more than a Ford or Chevy but, “It was a Packard.” Ask a man that owns one, was the catch phrase of its time. It is with great sadness that my father has had to let this virtually two owner car go. Yes, it needs work, but it was put into storage in 1978. The block was filled with oil to top of motor. Camphor was put under the seats and it was put in the garage, as the owner’s eyesight was failing. It has sat since its last state inspection in 1978, Yes , this is your Barn Find, with 36,452 miles on it. The seats had seat covers put on by the dealer at the time of purchase as the original owner who was a farmer did not want to dirty up the seats. The pedals rubber and floor mats with minimal wear show this truly is a low mileage Packard 2 Door Fast Back Touring Coupe, not a 4 Door , a 2 Door! The back seats have virtually never been sat in and the torn slip covers on the front seat show what may be very presentable interior seats. The back corner of Front seats has been exposed from some sort of damage from something. The body needs total sanding and areas of rust need to be addressed, but it is all there, nothing missing. The rear fender skirts were recently removed before these pictures were taken for the removal of the original tires. Yes, this 1948 Packard had its original tires from1948 still on it til just last week. And I had not tried to put the fender skirts back on. I have turned the motor over but the fuel line must be plugged, and the carburetor needs to be cleaned etc. This is an auto needing total restoration, but it is a 2 Door Fastback, very distinctive one of its kind look!! That a hot rodder can take it and rework it to a street rod, “lead sled” look! I have not seen a 1948 two door Packard on Ebay since I started looking in the 1990’s , there are many 4 door Packards, but not many 2 door “ Drop-Head Coupes.” One had to drop their heads to get into the back seat, hence the phrase “drop-head” . This Packard has no missing chrome trim, it is all there. The spare tire and brackets as well as battery brackets are all there. The original owner’s manual with notes on maintenance. This Packard is looking for a home of someone that has the ability to put it back on the road. The reserve is just what the cost to have the wheels taken off , which was shockingly easy, no frozen wheel bolts. The 1948 tires were removed, no one is collecting 1948 tires are they? (joke) They have been replaced with new tires. Rims were sand blasted to bare metal , rust proofed primer used and then painted gloss black with new tires mounted. And the cost of this is just what the reserve is. Additionally this car also comes with the Packard hubcaps which come with the car. They are in very good condition. And are in the trunk of the car.
