Vehicle Detail
2001 Dodge Stratus ES 2.7. Original Owner, Garaged and Well Maintained Car. The motor recently fell victim to a failed water pump, which dumped approximately 2 - 3 quarts of coolant into the crankcase. This an inherent problem aging 2.7 liter motors, which Chrysler's designers created when they decided to put the water pump inside the timing chain housing and driven by the timing chains. The engine did not seize up. The motor was running prior to being shutoff, and before major destruction could occur. The motor has been repeatedly flushed out until all visual signs of contaminates were removed and has been refilled with fresh oil. The engine starts immediately and runs smooth; however, there is significant noise coming from either the valve train or timing chain housing, I expect that its latter since the water pump did fail and pumped coolant into the timing chain housing. At a minimum the water pump and timing chains need to be replaced. The resale value of the car does not warrant the cost for having a mechanic getting involved in what really is an unknown, but being that the car is on otherwise perfect condition it could be perfect for someone with the time and mechanical ability who might want to tackle the repairs, or for someone who is need of a source of parts. Other known issues: There is a small oil leak from the oil pressure sending unit (another 2.7 problem). Small 2" crack in the outer glazing of the windshield, but not in the line of site. Front springs require new cushion donuts between springs and strut tower housing. The interior and body is in excellent condition with only a few minor dings in the side panel molding. Minor tap to the rear bumper in 2001 resulted in only the rear bumper skin having to be replaced due to a crack in the plastic and no internal damage to bumper. Regular oil changes at 4000 to 7000 mile intervals using only hi-grade synthetic oil. The Auto-Stick Transmission is in excellent condition and had a fluid & filter change at 71,000 miles.Goodyear Eagle GT P215 60R16 on Factory Chrome/Alloy wheels. 15,000 miles on tires.
