This is another of my personal VW's up for sale. Those of you who check our website from time to time may recall my '79 Super Beetle Cabrio with only 15K miles that I sold this winter. I bought this Squareback in 2002 when I had a few bucks to play with and preserved and or restored whatever it needed: all new brakes; new Bilstein shocks; new Michelin XZX tires from Coker with new VW steel wheels; engine was removed from car and thoroughly serviced including fuel lines; new exhaust and heater boxes which were also ceramic coated; all new window rubbers, correct for the chrome trim; upper ball joints; complete tune; filters etc...... I am the third owner of this car, purchased from Levittown, NY, that owner owned the car for approx one year, he purchased it from an estate in northern NJ where the story was that the car had been sitting in storage for over 20 years. The car has an automatic trans which a true 3 speed Borg-Warner, very robust, much different than the auto-stick Beetles; dealer installed VW air conditioning kit, which has worked from time to time but I got tired of fixing leaks so have not reactivated it. The car drives like it is brand new, heat works like it did in 1973; trans shifts crisply. The original bias-ply spare tire is in the front trunk and looks to have never been on the ground as the jack looks to have never been used too. You can see from the photos that the car was repainted at a very high level. This was obviously not a "respray" but a show-quality restoration. The original paint was actually in great condition, but as all red paints age they become dull and the original paint just would not buff to an acceptable shine. The work was done by Erhard BMW's bodyshop in 2006. As you can imagine it was not cheap. This is probably the most expensive original Type 3 Squareback posted on the internet. I am not embarrassed by that fact as this is a unique and rare VW. Unless you are an avid VW fan/collector you may think the price is crazy. If you are a VW fan/collector or a VW dealer (perfect home for this on your showroom) you should not miss this opportunity. It is a museum quality car and needs to be seen and driven.
