Vehicle Detail
This is a fun vehicle! A true “Hippie Van”! She is a daily driver; she turns a lot of heads; gets lots of smiles and honks; and a lot of “peace signs” waved at her from folks of all ages and walks of life! I’ve owned her since 1999 and had the engine rebuilt in June of 2004. The pistons used during the rebuild were 87mm, which are slightly larger than the standard 1600cc engine which gives her a little bit more horsepower. There are approx. 12,000 miles on this rebuilt engine. The most recent long road-trip I took was mid-2006 when I drove this bus from Kentucky to Southern California and then on to South Florida when I moved here. I purchased this bus from folks in Virginia, and she does have some cosmetic rust issues (does not interfere with the operation of the vehicle) at the lower body (see photos). The body has been an art canvas to many “themes” in the past; from painted plain white, to “Hippie Flower Power” themes. All created with free-hand painting and/or decoupage. Mechanically, she is in very good condition. She may well be the most reliable vehicle you own. She starts up strongly, always right away. She has always been in the care of professional mechanics that specialize in VW Classic vehicles. I will pass on to the winning bidder any past repair invoices in my possession. I’ve recently installed new carpeting in the cab, the walk-way, and the passenger area. The windshield has a large “spider” cracking (see photos) which has been like that for years. I just never got around to replacing it. The interior was re-upholstered in 1999 and is in very good condition. The rear bench, known as the “Z-Bed” is in very good condition. The rear hatchback needs new weather-stripping as do the front doors. The tires have good tread on them, and the spare tire is in decent shape. All folding tables in the passenger area are in good working order, and the ice box and sink are intact including the PVC venting piping. The Camper Pop-up top works fine, but is in need of a new canvas. The materials for this run approx. $250. From the interior, new tie-down straps will be needed (approx. $20 each) for a better secure to the body. The sliding side door needs some assistance in closing, but is a tight, proper fit once closed. Please remember this is a 40+ year old vehicle and there is absolutely no warranty, and is being sold “As-Is”. She will always need continuous tender loving care from a VW Classic professional mechanic, and in doing so will continue to bring you many years of tremendous enjoyment to drive. The upside is that when repairs are needed, they are generally inexpensive. Although I am not guaranteeing this, I would not hesitate to drive this vehicle to California from Florida again. The winning bidder is solely responsible for arranging the transporting of this vehicle.
