When Mercedes-Benz set out to build the finest sports coupe in the world they came up with the CL series, topped in 2002 by the rare CL55, especially rare when offered with the designo package as with this magnificent example. Beautifully designed, meticulously constructed, breathtakingly fast, and technology-laden, the CL-55 became the inspirational goal for drivers seeking the optimum in luxury and performance, a genuine supercar-wrapped in ample and luxurious surroundings. Prodigious power is an AMG trademark and the 5,439-cc Mercedes-Benz V8 was built to dominate tits market segment with a normally aspirated, hand-built and dyno-tested engine which boasted horsepower of 355 at 6,100 rpm and 391 lb-ft of torque available anywhere from 2,750 rpm to 4,000 rpm. To make the driving experience both convenient and sporting, AMG enhanced the electronically controlled five-speed automatic’s control with “Touch Shift,” allowing manual gear changes with the shift lever or steering wheel-mounted switches. The chassis incorporates a full range of electronic handling aids including Electronic Stability Program, Automatic Slip Control and Active Body Control, which counteracts body roll in cornering as well as squat and dive under acceleration and braking. New rear struts were also installed and a full service completed. This generation of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class introduced the refined Active Body Control fully active suspension system. Active Body Control uses a hydraulic suspension system to keep this car absolutely flat through the corners yet provides a ride quality that never is harsh or disturbing.
