1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme/442 W-30 Convertible in beautiful Code 78 Burgundy Mist "Black Cherry" being sold at "No Reserve" This was your Father's Oldsmobile if he was the cool Dad on the block. 442 stands for 4-speed/4-barrel/Dual Exhaust! This very elegant looking Convertible was simply made to look like an awesome 442 W-30 specimen. The price of gas has fallen so now all the muscle cars can be driven daily without breaking the bank. Although these Big Blocks are rather thirsty. Opportunities like this don't come around very often. It is no great secret that the 1970 Cutlass Supreme/442 Convertible has more than doubled in price over the last decade. This is an extremely rare genuine 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible that was ordered from the factory in the extremely rare code 78 Burgundy Mist. A true 442 Convertible has a vin number that starts with 344 to prove it is a real 442. That is the way to verify these cars came from the factory ordered as a genuine 442 convertible. The vin number on this car starts with 342. I'm sure most Cutlass/442 guys will tend to agree that it is very rare to find one in Burgundy Mist. 1970 has proven to be one of the most expensive and highly sought after years to acquire from the pinnacle of the muscle car era with the highest investment value. There are plain and simply not many left in existence. Everything will be explained that was learned from the previous owner who had this convertible in storage covered the entire time he owned it for the past six years during the winter months or when he was not driving it on hot summer days. This Big Block Rocket 455 engine was completely rebuilt about 2 years ago with less than 10,000 miles on the motor. The Rochester 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetor was recently rebuilt and sits on top of a new Edelbrock Performer 455 aluminum intake manifold. The driveshaft was rebuilt with new U-Joints. The awesome steel framed W-25 ram-air hood still has the primary hood pull and the secondary hood latch that both work well, but the chrome twistdowns make absolutely certain that this ram-air hood will never fly up on a driver at high speeds. On top of the quadrajet carburetor is a genuine GM ram-air induction air cleaner. This Rocket 455 does have the proper 396021 F casting numbers, but has not been verified to be the numbers matching original Rocket Big Block 455 that came with the car from the factory. This convertible drives nice and straight down the road with finger tip control steered by the cool 442 4-spoke steering wheel. All of the front suspension has been gone through with newer tie-rods, stabilizer links, a newer front stabilizer with new stabilizer bushings. All four shocks and springs were replaced within the last two years. There is a newer master cylinder with new brake lines in the rear, so with the power front disc brakes this car stops well. There is a newer fuel pump and a newer water pump. All the correct Cutlass/442 W-30 decals were placed in the proper locations that came throughout these models from the factory before they hit the showroom floor back in 1970. This Rocket Big Block 455 engine was changed over to electronic ignition, so it starts right up and runs great with a brand new battery. There are high performance Hooker headers coming off both sides of this Big Block Rocket 455 with newer 3" inch exhaust pipes attached to dual Flowmaster mufflers that makes this Big Block sound wicked to say the least. The front and the rear bumpers are new aftermarket triple plated chrome replacements. The expensive cool chrome dual pair of sport mirrors are metal not plastic. The balance of the chrome is in driver's quality condition or better including all four wheel opening moldings. The rear-end is believed to be the original 12-bolt, but I am unsure of the gear ratio. The paint work was done about three years ago in beautiful Code 78 Burgundy Mist, so this droptop can easily turn into the local favorite around town. This car maintained its original paint and has received only the single repaint. The rear quarter panels were replaced at the time of the fresh paint work. The majority of Muscle Car enthusiasts consider this stunning color as Black Cherry. You would be hard pressed to find another one in this original color. There will be endless compliments coming to whoever is the lucky winner of this rare classic. The white stripes did come out very nice. If the other 442's are viewed up for sale out there, anyone with a keen eye will see stripes running uphill or down hill along with different thicknesses even on near 100 point show cars. It would be very hard to find any stripes close to how straight the stripes look on the sides of this droptop. The fenders on this car are original 1970 fenders with no groves in the fender gutters unlike the 71-72 model year fenders that have little bumps on the fender gutters. The fenders, doors, and trunk lid are all believed to all be original to this body. The floor pans are all original and look really good. The frame is also in very nice condition. The carpeting looks like it was replaced at some point, because its in very nice condition with a new set of four black carpeted floor mats. The front bucket seats were recently professionally reupholstered, so they should be nice and comfortable for many years to come. In fact the entire interior looks in relatively nice condition as seen by the pictures with only minor imperfection. The drivers side and rear seat pictures were shot with the top down, but the passenger side front picture was shot with the top up, so that is why the drivers side front and rear seat pictures look a little lighter. It was too dark to go out and take anymore pictures. The wiper blades were replaced last week and the wipers work on both speeds with a new washer fluid container. The dash board is in very nice shape with no cracking and an original AM radio is still in the dash. The radio will need to be hooked up, but at least this dash was never cut up like was typically done back in the day to fit aftermarket stereo's. There is a pair of brand new Sony 6x9 speakers installed on the sides of the rear seat area. This way if the new owner wants to install an upgraded stereo the music will be able to be heard with the top down. The new stereo system will be left up to the winning bidder. Inside the drivers door still possesses the original blue General Motors manufacturer decal with the majority of the vin number still in tact showing this car was built in May of 1970. The convertible top is in very good condition with no rips or tears, and does have the back glass window option. Spring is coming up next week just in time for top down cruising. There is a newer California black boot cover in the trunk to place over the top when the top goes down into the well. The top well liner and the top padding were all replaced at the time the top was changed about 2 years ago, so this top should stay nice for many years to come. This 442 sits on a set of four Goodyear Eagle ST P225/60R14 inch raised white lettered steel belted radial tires with nice tread mounted on 14" inch Super Stock I wheels. All four wheels have all four bolt-on center caps, all four beauty trim rings, and all new chrome lug nuts. The frame is in good condition and the trunk floor looks in nice shape which was coated with A/C Delco black and aqua spatter spray to appear like it came out of the factory. There is a brand new trunk mat on the trunk floor that has a nicely restored jack, jack stand, and crow bar sitting on top of the new trunk mat. Also included in the trunk is a full size Super Stock I spare wheel with a brand new Copper Cobra raised white lettered spare tire that still has the removable blue paint on the raised white letters. This Oldsmobile came from the factory with power front disc brakes. It is very rare to find a classic convertible with this many factory options that include: tinted glass, power steering, power front disc brakes, bucket seats, console with a dual gate shifter also referred to as a his and hers shifter. This Olds was factory ordered with the air conditioning option, but does not function at this time. The air compressor is still on the engine, but getting the a/c controls functioning will be up to the new owner. Many of these convertible were not ordered with air conditioning back in those days, so that is always a nice option to have available on these classic muscle cars. This Olds is being sold with a clean and clear title issued from the State of Illinois. The actual mileage stated on the odometer reads just over 31,000 miles, so it is to be assumed that it may have rolled over once. There is no way to verify the mileage as original, although nowadays the mileage comes up exempt on a new change of ownership title when a car is more than 10 years old in most states. Included in the glove box is the original Oldsmobile Cutlass/Cutlass Supreme/442 owner's manual that came with the car back in 1970. The cover has some stains, but the inside of the manual is near pristine. These older classics that have survived for nearly half a century are becoming harder and harder to find. The Nada Classic Car Price Guide currently has a genuine 1970 Oldsmobile 442 with a Rocket 455 engine listed at 113,875 in high condition, which they consider an excellent overall vehicle that was completely restored, or an original vehicle showing very minimal wear. Note: This value does not represent a 100 point show car or a #1 vehicle. Those vehicles can reach much higher prices. Nada has the average condition value at $68,125 which they consider in good overall condition that could be an older restoration or a well maintained original vehicle that is completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. They say an average condition car is considered a 20-Footer! They have the lowest condition valued at $48,875 being considered a deteriorated restoration or a very poor restoration, but mostly usable "As-Is!" The lowest value does not represent a parts car, but would be considered as the price for a car needing a complete restoration. The set of four really nice Goodyear Eagle ST raised white lettered tires are really P225/70R14" inch steel belted radials not 60's. The correct tire size can be seen in one of the close up pictures.
