Vehicle Detail
Greetings: For sale is a 1986 Porsche 944 turbo, internally known at Porsche as the 951. The 1986 model year was the first to be imported into the United States. The 1986 year is the lightest of all 4 years brought into the country. I have a Porsche COA that lists the original options with the car. It has a clean Carfax, has had 3 owners including me and between the previous owner and I we have owned the car 17 years. We also were were very good ( me at a higher level) of maintaining service records as I was supplied a 1 inch folder of receipts and documents and under my ownership have accumulated and built a 2 inch thick, sleeved and bound history of everything accomplished with the car. I purchased the car from a fellow PCA member after a 18 month search. My criteria was for a car with as original paint, interior and engine as possible coupled with the lowest miles. I bought the car with 67,976 miles and I believe he bought it previously with about 48k miles. The average is about 2800 miles of year of use over its lifespan to date. My first goal once I took ownership was to make sure it never left me stranded, leaked any fluids and frankly caught fire! Older Porsches, in particular the 951’s because of the heat of the engine ( turbo) and unattended, old and brittle fuel lines are a recipe for disaster alongside its big brother the 911 which I also own in the same year. I had ordered from various vendors in the 951 community about 4500 dollars in parts, discussed with my Porsche shop which services my other Porsches a plan of attack. Of course the plan went out the window once we started as the “ while you’re in there adage” bit my wallet pretty hard. So here is the highlights with the details and explanations commented alongside. · All Hoses and vacuum lines replaced including Venturi Delete ( Lindsey Racing Full kit) · Braided steel fuel lines ( complete) · Braided steel brake lines and new MBC · New cross-drilled disc brakes · New OEM pads · New Bilstien Shocks ( green) · Water Pump, timing belt and rollers ( this service has been performed twice in my tenure with 3k miles separating the two but 3 years) · New Starter · New Alternator · New Bosch Battery and cover · New MSD and Distributor and Spark plug wires ( Lindsey Racing) · Head Gasket rated at 500hp ( Just for insurance) · Radiator serviced and refurbished for peace of mind · Every belt replaced So that was the original plan but then the while you are in there to fix a oil pan leak and main seal that was seeping ( PPi missed that) I had to make choices about the long-term ownership of the car. 951’s require the front end to be dropped to access the oil pan. It’s a lot of work, there are solutions to this problem but require an investment, I made them. · Lindesy Racing 3 piece cross-member purchased that allows quicker access to pan · Rods and bearings replaced · New Clutch and both main seals replaced · Lindsey Racing Mo30 sway bars added. · Refinished brake calipers and inner fender wheels dry iced cleaned · New catalytic converter · Entire underside cleaned by dry ice method. · Every O-Ring and gasket replaced · All speed sensors replaced · Fuel Level sender replaced and gas tank pulled, serviced and cleaned · High Temperature Cover for turbo ( Turbo was pulled and serviced) to reduce heat This was the first 3 months of ownership and about 10,000 dollars. Then the A/C started acting up. We started by converting it and that was met with failure. Then we did the following: · Replaced the Compressor · A/C head Unit with the last new OEM in the country at 800 dollars · Full evacuation and recharge resulted in vent temps of 43.5 degrees. · The receipt shows this a 1753 dollar repair in total. Finally I could start on the things I wanted to do that were fun. · The 16” Phone Dials were refurbished to knew and several gloss coats added to make cleaning not only easy but gave them depth. · Windows tinted · Full paint correction and the only paint work done on my watch, a damaged edge to the front left fender was addressed. I have pictures of the work and of course the receipt. It is the only portion of the car that is not single-stage original paint and troubled me to do but I could not live with the blemish · A OEM new Saratoga top purchased but I decided not to use it but comes with car · New Bridgestone RE-11 tires with about 1700 miles on them · New Ansa black exhaust tip added So this held me for awhile until I decided the electronics and interior needed an update. I had an idea of what I wanted to do but needed to sit with my stereo shop, plan and explain my vision of the interior. Having modern Porches I knew I could not last long without certain features and decided to do this based on the fact the next owner ( you tell yourself you will keep the car forever but we all know forever does not mean that) could get a center console replacement for under 200 dollars and I would retain the previous owners pride and joy addition of the Blaupunkt Berlin Head Unit to pass along even though you were tempted to sell it as the values on the piece rose. So my vision was straightforward, I had a perfect dash with no cracks and I wanted to build on it for my view of how a modern interpretation of the 951 could be. So I did the following: · 3 Piece speaker install with custom door panels that mimic the 993 speakers. The speakers sound fantastic but the look is so seamless that most think it is OEM and is always a conversation in the 944 community. · Pioneer Double Din Head Unit that provides everything, Navigation, BT, SD card, DVD and Apple Car Play. In a good location and is installed perfectly · A LIFETIME XM radio tuner module is included. I debated this but I do not think I will be buying a car that requires a HU change again so this is a 250 dollar a year forever gift that will keep on giving. You don’t have to do anything, it will just work forever. · Tru Amplfier powers everything · Removable subwoofer in back · Viper Alarm system that opens doors and rear hatch with ¼ mile range · All buttons and switches replaced with new ones, no 30 year old grime, period · New 959 Special Wishes steering wheel replaced the 930 Special Wishes steering wheel because I liked the embossed Porsche logo and red stiching · New Hand brake leather boot and polished button · New leather wrapped arm rest cover · New CoCo mats ( all black) · New trunk mat with red Turbo script · Rennline Black pedals, and dead pedal and red extensions · The guage cluster was removed and refurbished to illuminate like new.Only brighter. · Odometer and all gauges serviced and restored as a preventive measure with the face of the cluster polished to new · Front windshield replaced ( still perfect) Once this was accomplished and I enjoyed the car for awhile I decided the next phase was to be accomplished. Performance. The car stock is quick, not fast, quick. 220HP and it had a Powerchip ECU which added 10hp. ( It was the 80’s afterall) I decided that while I prepared the car for a lot of HP I would factor in the chassis , my driving style and overall drivability coupled with my priority of dependability on the next step. I did plan on a possible MAF setup with my most ambitious mod but I decided it against it later on because it violated my primary goal of dependability. · Lindsey Racing Wastegate · Lindsey Racing Stage 2 Intercooler ( new Porsche Crest added since we had the nose panel off) · Lindsey Racing 3.0 Fuel · Lindsey Racing ECU While I debated exhaust I opted not too, I did not like the sound or drone. Lindsey says the mods were good for 60HP and it feels like it but let’s just say the car is about 260HP and about 290-300lbs of torque now to be conservative. It is fast, it will push you back but highly drivable. I did the full short shift and the linkage in the back which makes my 911’s 915 transmission feel even more inadequate which is so annoying as they are both 1986’s. Is there more power to be had? Of course but this is enough for me. Which brings me to that modification I mentioned. Lindsey Racing sells a NACA head light cover. It looks so 80’s cool and its fiberglass…and pure crap. I bought it, it won’t fit to save your life. So my fabricator used it for a template and made one that does fit out of metal. The ducts are bigger and it fits perfectly, painted to match. Non-functional at the moment but could be for a MAF setup in the future. Now it just looks cool. I spent about 850 dollars on that foray. Lighting. The 80’s were not the hey day of lighting technology. While I rarely drove the car at night and never in the rain as I took the wipers off as I liked the look better (Benefit of living in Southern California) I upgraded ALL the lights. First I did the wiring upgrade because I did H4 so again the groundwork of spending more money to avoid shorts and possible fire. But eventually over the years I have found very cool LED Headlights that draw less power and give off more light. All of the rear light bulbs have been converted to LED bulbs. I have bought Only944 entire catalog, all of it is on this car. The extra light is now used, rear fog light, you name it it is done. Further enhancements: · All outside seals around glass are new ( with spare new sets) · New Vacuum line ( KLR) from ECU to boost gauges ( Added a secondary VDO in line of sight that is period correct) · Wired for radar detector · New rear view mirror ( old one was flimsy) · New Sunroof seals and gears · New Racing Dynamics strut bar · Powder coated Cam cover with lettering · New Fluid reservoir ( could not deal with yellowed one) · New polished Intercooler intakes · New Heat shield under hood · OEM turbo script on fender · 3 keys with all having working flashlight function · Everything works, everything including rear hatch release. · OEM Porsche outdoor cover · CTEK battery maintainer · Factory manual and also workshop book · Turbo script cover for shift knob · Dash cover to keep it mint · Rennline Turbo door sills I assure you this is not complete. I have spent well over 25k dollars on top of the price of the car making everything as perfect as could be. The car has past smog in California every time with flying colors including the last one 4 months ago. The car is registered currently, fully insured with a clear title in hand. There are no stories, none. Everything works and works better in many instances than when Porsche built it 30 years ago. It smells good inside ( a huge priority for me from day one) It looks good from 20 feet or 2 feet. The new owner only need drive it and MAINTAIN it. This car requires a commitment to spend money every year of some kind. I could have skimped on water pump/timing belt as I did it 3 years ago but only 3 thousand miles. After working so hard to bring it up to date and then some I refused to do what others have done. This car is done but remember that it is a commitment with older Porsches. I have two owners including mine documentation. Mine is plastic sleeved, bound and totals far more than I care to admit. But the new owner should feel delighted that the cars past 17 years of life is documented thoroughly. I believe my price is more than fair at this point. I see what good ones go for on BAT, EBay and elsewhere. Some may not like my mods or what I have done and that is fine. Everything I have done is reversible to a degree including putting the Blaupunkt back in ( which check and see what a Berlin fetches now) but the bones and soul of this car are ready for another 30 years! Thank you. Lastly, please, no time wasters I had one already that did not have the money and soaked up 3 weeks of my life. I won’t waste yours please do not waste mine.
