Vehicle Detail
2003 TOYOTA RAV4 S HISTORY AND THE BASICS Up for sale is this 4-speed automatic transmission 2003 Toyota RAV4 S, with factory sport package and sunroof. This pre-owned vehicle has approximately 192,644 miles (I will continue to drive it while it is for sale, so the mileage will be somewhat higher). I have owned it since 2005; it was originally purchased brand new in 2003 from a local Toyota dealership by a family member in my household. This vehicle is both comfortable and practical, with lots of cargo space. I have included representative photos. I have described the major (and many minor) issues of which I am aware. However, not every flaw mentioned in the description has a corresponding photo, and not every minor flaw has been mentioned. If you have any questions not addressed herein, please do not hesitate to contact me. BODY, PAINT, TRIM, AND WINDOWS Overall, the body, paint, and trim are in good condition for a vehicle of this age, with some wear and flaws. The exterior body paint color is graphite gray (the colors may vary with those displayed on your screen). The exterior has silvery gray plastic trim and details. There is a roof rack, a sunroof, four passenger doors, and a rear cargo door. My photos were taken on a day with clouds in the sky, so there are some cloud reflections in the paint and glass. There are water marks, scratches, scuffs, and tiny chips to the paint. There is some oxidation to the paint, and the appearance may improve if it was buffed. There is flaked paint near the raised air intake grill on the hood. There is a ½ inch body ding above the front wheel on the passenger side. There are a couple of other very minor door dings on the passenger side. Since this has always been a California car, there is no known rust. There is a missing rubber trim piece to the roof; this seems to be strictly cosmetic, and there are no leaks. The plastic exterior trim is oxidized and worn. There is a ½ inch shallow depression in the plastic rear bumper on the driver’s side. The window glass has no chips or cracks. The windshield and front windshield wiper blades were replaced in August 2017. The rear windshield wiper blade needs to be replaced. The headlights have minor crazing. The headlights and taillights have slight fogging, but are still bright overall. In summary, the exterior looks quite presentable for a vehicle of this age. CHASSIS, UNDERCARRIAGE, ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, SUSPENSION, AND WHEELS I’m not aware of any mechanical issues with the vehicle’s chassis, undercarriage, engine, transmission, or wheels. The engine sounds good and runs smoothly. An oxygen sensor was replaced in August 2017. The vehicle passed smog certification at a California STAR station in September 2017. The power steering gearbox has a fluid leak. My mechanic told me that the top seal on the unit is compromised. When turning the steering wheel, it will sometimes make a crunching or grinding noise. My mechanic said that this noise is related to the fluid leak issue. I have been driving the vehicle like this without any incidents and have only added fluid once; however, the buyer should have this repaired. My mechanic said that the entire unit will need to be replaced. Your mechanic could have a different opinion though. The computer and transmission were replaced at 151,097 miles. The transmission shifts smoothly through all gears. New brake pads were installed, and the rotors were resurfaced at 155,372 miles. All of the tires were replaced at 179,161 miles with Firestone Destination P235/70R16 tires; the spare tire has never been used. In 2011, I ran over some road debris while driving in foggy weather. The oil pan was damaged and replaced. INTERIOR AND UPHOLSTERY The interior is gray. Overall, the interior has expected wear for a vehicle of this age. There are scuffs, scratches, and wear areas to the plastic parts of the interior. There are some pretty substantial scuffs to the plastic “walls” from hauling things in the cargo area while the rear seats were temporarily removed. The fabric seats and door panels have stains and discoloration which might improve if you use upholstery cleaner (I did not clean them). There is a ½ inch hole in the door side of the driver’s seat. There are two holes in the carpet in the driver’s foot area, which can be covered with floor mats. There is a small bleach spot to the carpet in the rear cargo area. The headliner has several marks and scuffs. This has always been a non-smoking and no pets vehicle. There is a CD and cassette tape player with an AM/FM radio. These work. The volume knob is a bit wonky; sometimes, when you try to turn the volume up, it goes down, and vice versa. It works if you fiddle with it a little. The front passenger window only opens from the driver’s side power window control. The front passenger power window control does not work. Both front power window control panels have a tendency to pop out of the doors (the clips that hold them in place are broken), but they can easily pushed back into place. The sunroof opens and closes as it should. The power mirrors work. The heating and air conditioning works; the central passenger side louvred vent has a slightly broken plastic adjustor mechanism, but it still can be adjusted. The light which is supposed to illuminate the shifter display does not work, but the gear lights on the dashboard do work. The clear plastic covering over the dashboard control panel has a small, opaque, drip-shaped discoloration area on the right hand side. Occasionally, the ignition key needs to be wiggled to get the vehicle to start. The tumblers are probably worn, but not to the point that I have ever been unable to turn the key to start the vehicle. The steering wheel is worn, but this is currently cloaked with a steering wheel cover. OTHER The power locks on the two front doors do not work; I would guess that this is due to failed solenoids, but I have never had a professional diagnose the problem. They will not lock or unlock using the car key or the keyless entry alarm remote control. The remote control needs to be used to disarm the alarm system (it also functions properly to set the alarm) and unlock the rear doors. Then, the front doors can be manually unlocked by reaching them from the rear doors. The loops used to attach the remote control fobs to a key ring are broken, so you have to carry them in your pocket or purse.
