Once again I found a cool car riding my bicycle around town. This Impala was with its owner for 53 years. The gentleman purchased it from his sister when it was 1 year old. She couldn't make the payments of $72 a month. At the time the man was a member of the Tuskegee airmen, an elite group of black military pilots. The car was kept here in Berkeley, California for the last 40 years. Airplane pilots keep the best cars. We have found many cool cars here at CD70. This old chevy is amongst the coolest. It has the original carpet and original canvas liners in the trunk which is amazing. The engine had been rebuilt for $5grand and the trans had been re-worked at this time too. It does clunk into gear until the car is thoroughly warmed up. Its remarkable to me that all the dash indicators are working and the rear speaker tray is still intact.(starting to crumble though...) This car has stood the test of time. It has received a new rear 1/4 at some point. The old 1/4 trim piece is not too crunched up so it can't have been too bad. The replacement is professional and lines up well. It must have been repaired decades ago as it blends in with the rest of the body. The vehicle has seen some seasons and a new paint job would be a great place to start. There is more cleaning to be done and the impala could be enjoyed immediately as it shows no signs of slowing down. The thing hums to a start on one click of the key and two pumps of petrol. We have found many porsches and mustangs and alfas and vettes, maybe 400 vehicles by now. This old chevy really got us fired up. Its very unusual to find an old car in such preserved condition. Its rough around the edges, the bones however are rock solid. It hasn't been modified in any manner and thats what makes it special to us.
