"Engineered like no other car in the world." For decades that was the Mercedes motto. But under the onslaught of new competitors from Japan and a surging BMW, the company in the early 1990s moved away from the cold rationality implied by that slogan and toward a warmer, and perhaps fuzzier, image of itself. Judging by this spanking-new E300, however, we don't think anyone told the engineers about the change. Although the car is 9 years old, it still drives like new. Having clocked 177,900 miles, the engine still has a lot of oomph... drove to the Lake District and the car's engine power could be felt on gradients where other cars struggled... the turbo diesel 3000 cc is a very powerful engine, and when it came out it was the quickest diesel. These cars are easily capable of doing over 500,000 miles without major issues with the engine, provided the body does not rust away. I love mine, as I have maintained it with a specialist. Pride, so they say, comes before a fall. That motto pretty much sums up Mercedes' fall from grace at the turn of the millennium. We'll leave the fine detail to the automotive historians, but nobody - not even Mercedes - disputes the Chrysler alliance went badly wrong. Coincidentally or otherwise, a nosedive in Mercedes quality kicked in shortly after the 1998 merger/takeover, blighting Benzes for years after. Indeed, many Merc diehards have foresworn the brand for ever as a result of their experiences in the early 2000s. The GL320 CDI, as the diesel is designated, was the least expensive model in the GL line, with a base price of $53,775 when it was delivered in August 2007. At that price it comes equipped nicely, but we also specified several options to make it even more comfortable. The Premium 1 package ($6400) added a rearview-backup camera, parking sensors, a glass sunroof, a navigation system, satellite radio coupled to a better sound system, and a power passenger seat, steering column, and liftgate. Overall, we averaged 22 mpg with the GL, which is terrific for a vehicle that’s about the same size and heft as a Cadillac Escalade. It didn’t much matter whether we drove the GL320 in town or on the highway, the mileage stayed consistently in the low 20s, rising to the mid-20s if we kept our highway speed below 75 mph. When the GL first arrived, we were concerned that finding the requisite ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel might be a problem, but it turned out to be everywhere. It was even in supply at one particular gas station in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where the diesel pumps did not carry the ULS label and the humanoids at the gas stations had never heard of the stuff. The characteristic diesel rattle and smoky exhaust are minimal in the GL. At startup in the morning—which never required a long glow-plug wait—we noticed that the oil-burning V-6 is a little louder than a gasoline engine, especially if you’re in an enclosed garage. But once under way, the rattle quickly fades. The objective test results of this ­diesel SUV are not likely to impress anyone—especially owners of a 403-hp Escalade—with its 8.6-second 0-to-60 time and its 16.5-second quarter-mile slog (both times deteriorated slightly in tests after 40,000 miles). But on the road, we were universally satisfied with the GL’s pickup. Though there is a slight amount of turbo lag when starting from rest, after this machine has gone 10 feet, it accelerates smoothly up to its 130-mph top speed. And there’s plenty of thrust for passing on back roads, even with a heavy load onboard. There were no complaints about the GL’s road manners, either. Although nothing could disguise the big SUV’s 200-inch length and 5555-pound curb weight, we all liked its precise and responsive steering and its comfortable and well-controlled ride. A firmer brake pedal, however, would have been appreciated by most of us. As large as it is, we expected to be able to pack plenty of things into the GL, and we weren’t disappointed. The front seats are roomy and very comfortable, and the second-row seating is also good, but the third row is a little tight on kneeroom. That said, the last row will accommodate adults on a short haul. Of course, if all three rows are filled with people, there’s not much room left for luggage. However, that third row of seating folds perfectly flat with the flick of an electric switch. Presto! Luggage room is plentiful. If its overall package is not quite as efficient as a minivan’s, the GL is at least as efficient as competitive SUVs. And what it does offer is sure-footed four-wheel drive in slippery conditions. When winter arrived, we installed four Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3 snow tires, which inspired confidence even in blizzard conditions. As are most modern high-end vehicles, the GL320 CDI was equipped with a host of electronic conveniences, many of which could serve as challenging intelligence tests. Prominent among these was the GL’s COMAND system, which is Mercedes’ first-generation version of a combined navigation system and LCD-based electronic controller. No one found this system intuitive to use, and the tiny little knob that controls it requires the dexterity of a pediatric surgeon. The optional voice-control system didn’t help—it misunderstood at least half of our spoken commands. The GL’s optional iPod hookup worked well but could only be switched from track to track using controls on the steering wheel. With all of the buttons and soft keys incorporated in the COMAND system, it seems that Mercedes could have used them to provide iPod controls for the GL’s front passenger. Driving the GL320 CDI (DIESEL) one learns what it must feel like to be a deity when freed from the shackles of place and time and the cares and worries that haunt ordinary drivers. The GL320 CDI (DIESEL) engine runs without sound or vibration at idle and normal speeds. It has more power than even the largest military Hummer, yet when pushed merely makes a slight whooshing sound while objects from afar get very big very fast and evaporate in your rear view mirror almost instantly. Shifting through the gears the E320 BLUETEC(DIESEL) gives no jerking forward and back, but instead offers continuous, unbroken smooth acceleration more like a silent turbine jet engine. The E320 BLUETEC(DIESEL)'s ground speed exceeds the speed at which aircraft lift off, and ten E320 BLUETEC(DIESEL) have more power than a locomotive with a lot less weight and noise. While moving the GL320 CDI (DIESEL) reminds one that it costs over five times what a normal Sedan does not by excess, but by the absence of all the little noises, inconveniences and compromises of lesser cars. As many world religions have noted, pleasure and Heaven are not obvious pleasures, but the complete lack of unpleasantness. Driving the GL320 CDI (DIESEL) is salvation. Behind the wheel your life is perfect. The GL320 CDI (DIESEL) is a masterpiece of beauty, power, smoothness, safety and convenience which cannot be put into words by any living poet. The rest of this is all technical. Other SUV occasionally can offer better performance on paper in one aspect or another, but always at the expense of something else at which the GL-CLASS continues to excel. The rest of this cannot possibly convey the pleasure received from owning an GL320 CDI (DIESEL) . I present the rest of these facts for my personal reference after having researched them INTRO: I've owned Mercedes and BMW's for years. They are strong, durable and get great mpg. Well it is a true fact that the older German cars are easier to maintain and less cost compared to the new ones. Back in the 90's to own one of these fine German cars you either have to be rich, old, or a drug dealer if you were my age back in the day. Everybody knows during that time if you owned a Mercedes or BMW, you had money and in that time of era cars wont even close to a Mercedes and BMW. Even Lexus was no where to being close to design and style. 20 years ago most cars were cheaply made but Mercedes and BMW were always Over Engineered during that time. This GL320 CDI (DIESEL) needs nothing for inspection runs and drives great (will go anywhere).
