Vehicle Detail

Up for sale is a 1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Station Wagon (Woody, Woodie). This 8-passenger model is a rare find; there were only 4,912 built (half as many as in ’48) and you will either find the existing few out there restored to the point that they are out of reach for most of us or you will find them as total basket cases, missing lots of wood, most of the “woody only” parts, and probably just a floor pan and fenders. In contrast, this is an almost complete driver and in its current state, I would not hesitate to drive it a good distance or take it to any local show. History: It originated in Florida and I bought it from a guy with a hot rod shop who claimed he bought it from the second owner. I was told that it was termite-free with excellent wood, that the floors were good, that it was a running, driving project, and that it was completed except for the rear bumper. Much to my dismay, the top had been chopped a couple of inches from original and what those other descriptors mean to that seller is less than accurate in reality. That said, I have put a lot of work and sweat equity into it since I bought it and registered it in California to the yellow plates shown and original VIN. It is registered as a station wagon and has not been "blue plated or new VIN issue" by the CHP. Mechanically, it now has a smoothly running 216 CID 6 cylinder, 6-volt, engine mated to a three-speed standard manual three on the tree transmission (not a vacuum shift). The electrics work fine as far as lights and temperature/oil gauges, it has a rebuilt generator, new aluminum radiator, and new water pump. The brakes were rebuilt (new master cylinder, new slave wheel cylinders) and function well. Bodywise, the fenders and hood are decent and are ready to be taken off, worked on, and painted to suit your taste (Oxford Maroon is the original color based on the cowl numbers). The floors have rust (see needs below). Some wood needs to be replaced (see needs). Interior; All three seats have been restored. The dash was painted gloss black. The inside door panel wood is decent or ok for driver quality, but should be replaced for perfection. The handles are the originals and though not shown, the set is complete. The carpet is new as well as the LeBaron Bonney top. Chrome; The grille and bumpers need to be rechromed as does the dashboard chrome. The rear bumper is missing. I split a regular Fleetline or Fleetmaster bumper to accommodate the spare tire. I have the original bumper brackets for the rear bumper. Tires and wheels are good. The spare does not turn 100% true and should be used only as a spare. It wears four hard to find 16” accessory full dish hubcaps (spare full dish hubcap used for pics only). Needs: There are a few pieces of door jamb wood that are easily replaceable and re-installed, that do have some termite damage. See picture below. The floors are rusty and should be replaced for perfection, but they are not so gone as to warrant immediate attention. The prior seller put some aluminum panels over the worst areas. It needs glass on both front doors and work on the regulators for all doors. I received a $500 estimate for the work. The hood latch needs a cable prior to installation. The spare tail light is excluded from the sale. Overall, this is a good foundation for a custom, chopped and slammed woody. With time, patience, and money (I estimate another 5K; 1 for the floors, 2.5 for the body and paint, 1.5 for rechrome and minor mechanics), this wagon will compete with the beautiful top-dollar woodies out there. It's a good candidate! Alternatively, you can leave it as is and enjoy the crowds it always draws. First picture is a photoshop concept if bagged and slammed (2k). I am only selling this vehicle to make room for a 1958 Chevrolet Impala convertible project. Don’t low ball me, but don’t be afraid to make an intelligent offer in the 20’s. I know what they are worth when done. I am just over 27K into it. My loss, your gain. Personal inspections welcome for local buyers. 310-227-6353. Calls preferred over text or email.
