Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1968 Jaguar E-Type 2+2 (XKE). According to Jaguar it is a Series I. According to everyone else it's a series 1.5 because has a some Series II features. Title is clear. This car is NOT RESTORED. It is basically a survivor. I bought it fifteen years ago and, reluctantly, it is time to sell. I am disabled and do not have the energy (or the money) to maintain it. It is a solid driver with no serious mechanical issues, although I do think the brake booster needs to be replaced, as it doesn't stop as well as it should. Paint: The car was originally Willow Green and was painted black many years before I acquired it. The paint has many flaws and is thin in some spots where you can see the original color bleeding through. I repainted the hood (bonnet) because some chemical got on the paint and made a mess. I am not a professional painter. If it wasn't so cold in my garage I would sand it with some 400-600 grit and put another coat or two on it. Body: There is a slight crease in the passenger door from some jerk in a parking lot. It isn't very noticeable and when (or if) you paint the car it will only take a bit of fill to make it right. It does not need a new skin. There is a small hole in the drivers floorboard at the joint where the firewall joins the floorboard caused by rust, see the photos. If I were going to fix up the car I would have a patch welded to close up the hole and then put POR-15 on the floorboards. You may have other ideas.Glass: The windshield is tinted. No cracks. EDIT: There are fine wiper scratches which probably can be minimized by buffing out. The windshield seal is shrunk and really needs to be replaced. This is not a job for an amateur. The rubber seals for the other windows are old, cracked and very tired. Trim: most of the trim is in good shape, none is missing. The headlamp surround on the driver's side is dinged up a bit, but not too bad. A skilled craftsman could straighten and re-chrome it. The bumper spears are crazed a bit, but you have to look close to see it. Interior: No tears in the seats or upholstery. Some minor places where the trim needs gluing. Carpet is so-so. The wood on the steering wheel was good, but should be refinished in my opinion. I put the cover on it to make it easier to grip, as I have large hands. Brakes: Brakes are good except I think the booster needs rebuilding or replacing. (XKS has them for $275.) Engine: 4.2 liter, 6 cylinder, dual overhead cam. Not the original block or head. Minor oil leaks need addressing. Dual Stromberg Carburetors, need adjusting, and maybe rebuilding. Runs well, but often the idle won't settle down. I put a modern radiator fan on the car because one of the originals (there are two) was burned out. I wanted to drive the car and not worry about overheating. I have the original parts which will go with the car. 1968 was the only year with a metal heat crossover (smog stuff). I took it off and put on a cover from a later model. The original crossover and exhaust manifold are included, but need repairing if you want to put them back on. Factory AC: It didn't work when I bought the car. The compressor is bound up and a hose is broken. A couple of the vents need repairing or replacing (There's a guy selling reproductions on ebay). Heater: No leaks when I bought the car, and I drove it for 2,500 miles before bypassing the core because it get's really hot where I live, (sometimes 115 degrees, and once or twice 120). Transmission: Borg Warner 8, 3-Speed Automatic. Functions well. The shift knob is not original, I don't know if it was provided by Jaguar or someone else. It's leather with a metal growler on top and is much nicer than current production knobs in my opinion. I've seen identical ones selling for over $100 on ebay. You should like it. Rear Axle: Independent rear suspension. No leaks or issues. Tires & Wheels: the wire wheels are correct for the car. I replace the original non-eared knockoffs with used earlier version ones that have ears. The tires have great tread, but are at least 15 years-old. I trust them, but I'm not saying you should. $100 Non-refundable deposit by Paypal, the balance in CASH when you pick up the car. If you want it shipped, you do all the arranging. Of course, all funds will have to clear before the car ships. If you win the auction we can sort that out. Here is a link to the story of when I bought this car (and more pictures): http://www.answerguy(dot)org/sweet-ride.html (replace the (dot) with a period.
