Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 1947 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Station Wagon (Woody, Woodie). This 8-passenger model is a rare find; there were only 4,912 built (half as many as in ’48) and you will either find the existing few out there restored to the point that they are unaffordable for most of us or you will find them as total basket cases, missing lots of wood, most of the “woody only” parts, and probably just a floorpan and fenders. In contrast, this is an almost complete driver and in its current state, I would not hesitate to drive it a good distance or take it to any local show. History: It originated in Florida and I bought it from the guy who claimed he bought it from the second owner. I was told that it was termite-free with excellent wood, that the floors were good, that it was a running, driving project, and that it was completed except for rear bumper. Much to my dismay, the top had been chopped a couple of inches from original and what those other descriptors mean to that seller is less than accurate in reality. That said, I have put a lot of work into it since I bought it and registered it in California. Mechanically, it now has a smoothly running 216 CID 6 cylinder, 6-volt, engine mated to a three-speed standard manual three on the tree transmission (not a vacuum shift). The electrics work fine as far as lights and temperature/oil gauges, it has a rebuilt generator, new aluminum radiator, and new water pump. The brakes were rebuilt (new master cylinder, new slave wheel cylinders) and function well. Bodywise, the fenders and hood are decent and are ready to be taken off, worked on, and painted to suit your taste (burgundy is the original color based on the numbers). The floors have rust (see needs below). Some wood needs to be replaced (see needs). Interior; All three seats have been restored. The dash was painted gloss black. The inside door panel wood is decent or ok for driver quality, but should be replaced for perfection. The handles are the originals. The carpet is new (not pictured) as well as the LeBaron Bonney top. Chrome; The grille and bumpers need to be rechromed as does the dashboard chrome. The rear bumper is missing. I split the bumper to accommodate the spare tire (the original rear bumper and brackets are missing). Tires and wheels are good. The spare does not turn 100% true and should be used only as a spare. It wears four hard to find 16” accessory full dish hubcaps (spare hubcap used for pics only). Needs: There are a few pieces of door jamb wood that are easily replaceable and re-installed, that do have some termite damage. The floors are rusty and should be replaced for perfection. The prior seller put some aluminum panels over the worst areas. It needs glass on both front doors and work on the regulators for all doors (drivers’ side regulator missing). I received a $600 estimate for the work and will complete it for the Buy it Now Price ($32,500). The original taillight is missing. Overall, this is a good foundation for a custom woody and with time, patience, and money, this wagon will compete with the beautiful top-dollar woodies out there. Alternatively, you can leave it as is and enjoy the crowds it always draws. The last picture is a photoshop concept if bagged and slammed. I am only selling this vehicle to make room for a 1958 Chevrolet Impala project. Don’t low ball me, but don’t be afraid to make an intelligent offer in the high 20’s. I know what they are worth when done. Personal inspections welcome for local buyers. 310-227-6353. If obtained, those items will be included with the car. There will not be second chance offers. If the top bidder flakes, this woody is going to the paint shop for its original maroon color.
