Vehicle Detail
A beautiful classic Convertible from 1963, a Chevrolet Impala with red on red color combination. This car was largely one owner, a lady, from 1963 to her passing in 1999, then bequeathed to her daughter. She sold the car to a family friend in 2006. I purchased it in 2007 and have owned it since. From the documentation I do have, and by the way the car drives, this car is a relative low mileage vehicle at 67,477. The original options on this car included:Power SteeringPadded dashAutomatic transmission327 cu in. 250hp Most of the car is original, starting with the powertrain, the 327 250hp motor, the Powerglide two speed transmission, and the differential, but have made a few changes to improve safety and to a lesser extent performance. Here is list of improvements (in my opinion) I have done to the car: Just installed a new set of tires, last week. These are whitewalls from Hankook, P205/75/14. (I must admit, going from the Michelin blackwalls to these dresses the car up.) Replaced the Rochester 4GC carburetor with an Edelbrock 1406 with an electric choke.Upgraded the intake manifold to an Edelbrock to match the Edelbrock carburetor. Oil fill tube still in stock location.Upgraded original points distributor to a modern pointless Mallory.Upgraded the safety of the braking system by going from the single cylinder master cylinder to a dual cylinder from Classic Performance Products. In so doing, the brakes are now Power Brakes.Upgraded the Air Cleaner to a K&N.Replaced the gas tank.Replaced all wear related suspension parts. Shocks replaced with KYB, ball joints, bushings, slave cylinder, etc.Replaced original ragtop plus top boot and all parts associated with raising the top. Hydraulic motor, hydraulic lifting cylinders, hoses, etc.Replaced the original Delco AM only radio, with modern AM/FM/USB type. Can use an iPod. Replaced speakers with Kenwood in stock locations.Original electric clock is now a quartz movement. The face looks exactly the same in the dash.Entire stock muffler system has been replaced in stainless steel.Replaced both interior door panels with new reproductions. They look perfectly original and were priced accordingly.Replaced the carpet.Replaced the heater core.Replaced the water pump, alternator, belts, hoses, serviced (rodded) the original Harrison radiator.Replaced u-hoints, center support bearing, and rechecked the balance of the driveshaft.Replaced the fuel pump, fuel lines.Replaced the outside bearings (where the rear wheels are) of the differential, the original ones were making some noise when I bought the car.Have almost all of the original parts that I had removed; intake manifold, Rochester 4GC carburetor, choke linkage, Delco AM radio, tire jack, spare, and air cleaner box. Missing the original master brake cylinder, and the original distributor. For the ambitious, I have sourced some original parts for a factory "Deluxe All-Weather Air Conditioning System" look. I have the center metal duct piece, the lower dash part in red for the center duct, and both factor side vents. These parts are not perfect, but can be cleaned up to look fine. The circular holes would have to be drilled for the side vents. One company makes a unit that goes under the dash that uses the original AC/heater controls. I never got around to this project, and it is invasive. This car was assembled in Southgate CA from the "L" in the VIN. The 327 engine was assembled in Tonawanda NY from the code. All the codes I could see are correct to the time period. I could not see any code numbers on the Powerglide though. Other important details that should be mentioned; The cooling system seems to do its job on this car. Have had the car in bad traffic on a hot night, and it did well. At some point, the original owner or heirs did a major or minor overhaul of the engine. The compressions of the cylinders are good and uniform all around, about 180 psi if I remember correctly. This engine does not burn oil. On a drive from Las Vegas to Anaheim CA, I averaged 17 mpg, which seems pretty good for a carbureted V8 and a heavy car. I am uncertain if the cylinder heads have been "hardened" which allows one to burn unleaded fuel. I have been using unleaded premium for the six thousand miles that I have driven the car. When the pan for the Aluminum Powerglide was off, the mechanic thought the transmission had been overhauled in the past. The gears on this Powerglide are 1.76 for 1st, and of course, 1.00 for 2nd. The differential is 3.08. If you have questions about the car, you can call me at 214-417-1202 between 4-9 PST. This is a NO RESERVE AUCTION.
