Vehicle Detail
A quick history: I purchased this bike in 2005. It had 32,000 miles. I am the third owner. The original owner was a policeman in Waco and used it as police bike. The second owner lived south of Waco and used it as a cruiser. I added the passenger backrest and carrier and used it as a touring bike. When not touring, I made it a habit of taking the bike out every Sunday morning for an hour or so. Regular maintenance: I have over the 10 years kept the maintenance schedule set forth by Uncle Honda. Every two years the fluids where change. I also replaced the battery every two years. Being old school, I still changed the oil every 3500 miles and all service done at the dealership. (I did however take great pride in changing spark plugs myself) Both tires are Elite 3. The front is about 70% used and the rear is only two years old and has about 1000 miles on it. The carbs were cleaned with new kits done the week before I picked the bike up form the pervious owner. Because I did ride it on a regular basis I have never had any trouble. The bike has been for sale at a local dealership. Because of sitting I did have to replace a couple of the carburetor slides. I also had a new battery installed. In addition to regular maintenance, the following has been done over the years. Replaced rear air shocks with standard coil/hydraulic type shocks. New timing belt. New fuel plump. Cooling: New pump, hoses, thermostat, fan switch, radiator removed and serviced. Brakes: Brake lines (and clutch Line) replaced with steel braided cables, all slave cylinders rebuilt, and rear rooter replaced.(I have never done anything to the master cylinders. They do not leak and since OEM are not existent, the maintenance folks at Honda feel these fall under the category, if they ain't broke don't fix em.) Electrical: The stator and regulator/rectifier were replaced at 65000 miles. I was told it comes with a life time guarantee. I do have the paperwork as this is not a cheap repair. The three main stator leads and the wires to the main fuse next to the battery have been soldiered. The seat is a Saddleman and is about two years old. The passenger back rest, pad, and luggage rack came from eBay. They are not Honda and have no idea the brand. As shown in the photos, it is bolted on with U-bolts. AND about 4 years ago replaced all of the dash light bulbs. I mention this because, replacing all the bulbs turned out to be no small project. Known issues. About two years ago the main connector from the regulator/rectifier to the main wiring harness melted. There was no way to replace it without replacing most of wiring. I replaced it using individual connectors. The advantage is they are larger connectors and there is no heat issue. The thread inside the final drive where the shock bolts on is striped. I discovered this when I replaced the shocks. Unfortunately, to replace the rear tire, this bolt needs to come out in order for the final drive to drop low enough for the axle to clear the muffler . This last time the bolt would not come out. To get the axle out the Honda shop dropped the muffles. Not a big deal but it saves time if you know this before hand. Smoking issues of old Gold Wings. I found that if you park the bike on the center stand it almost never smokes when you start it up. Park it on the side stand, and yes it does smoke when you first start it. The mufflers do not have any holes. Please note they are ordinal. Final note. I have always parked this bike in a garage. To my knowledge the first two owners did likewise. The Honda dealership at I-45 N here in Houston is very close to my house and is run by a great group of qualified folks. There was never any hesitation about working on a bike that was over 20 years old and they did great work over the years. I do have and will send with the bike all of the invoices for service and parts that I have had done. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
