Vehicle Detail
I seemed to have a lot of interest many questions on my previous listing. This is a new listing with some of the text revised below. I had offers that approached my buy it now price, but nothing I felt compelled to accept. I should have listed as an auction to begin with. On this revised listing I am posting new pictures, since I was able to get the door to my building open yesterday to get the car out into the sunlight. I'm relisting as an "auction" format. Anyone wishing to view the old pictures can search completed listings. I purchased this nicely preserved 1985 Euro spec 280e several years ago. When I purchased the car, it appeared to have been stored since the early 1990's based on the date codes of the tires (which I replaced given their age). Unfortunately; likely due to extended storage, the M110 engine burns & leaks oil. Regardless, the car is a true pleasure to drive. I've driven it a few thousand miles over the past 3 or 4 years that I've owned it. I am selling the building where it is stored, otherwise I'd definitely have the valve guide seals replaced, and drive and keep it forever. I do not know that it is only the valve guide seals, as it could also be the valve guides themselves. The buyer should consider these repairs. The compression was very even between cylinders, and the engine runs super smooth. The original smoke silver paint is acceptable, but is definitely showing "patina". It's possible a wet sand and clear coat is all that's necessary to bring the orignal paint back to showroom. The interior is original and in beautiful condition. There are no odors, other than the wonderful aromas of the vintage German materials. The typical fading seen on the carpets and vinyl are not present in this car. The dash is orignal and crack free. The headliner is perfect, even around the sunroof. All glass is original and in great condition. All chrome and polished aluminum trim is free of pitting, including the Euro bumpers. Clearly, this car seems to have been garaged since new. I carefully examined the exterior, and there are two small dings - I tried to get them to photograph but they would not show up. I think they could both be removed with paintless dent removal, but really they are not that noticable and suit the overall look of this clean, original automobile. The undercarriage is very clean. I have replaced the ball joints. All suspension and chassis components seem to be in good order. No excessive play or rattles, brakes funtion particularly well. The shifter bushing needs to be replaced, but this does not affect driving and this is is an inexpensive part. This is an original rust free car which is most unusual. Mileage is known not to be accurate, since odometer was sticking when I purchased car. Odometer turns sporadically when driving, then stalls. If you search the VIN on google, you'll see an old listing come up from 2011. At least you'll get further context from the listing, if nothing else. I purchased the car from the gentleman (a mercedes enthusiast) who purchased the car from this dealer. I guess this makes me the 3rd owner. I would not hesitate to drive this car on a cross country trip, so long as the oil level is watched. The M110.988 is the final development of this legendary engine with its more modern fuel injection compared to the earlier carburated cars. Note that this was a gray market car, imported new. I have a clean NC title that will transfer with the car. Looking for a Mercedes enthusiast to bring the engine back to life and enjoy this wonderful car for another 30 years! I needed to list the year as 1980 to get car to list, since Ebay didn't recognize the Euro spec Vin for 1985. Jeff Walker
