Vehicle Detail
I bought this bike last year, but it is more bike than I was bargaining for. I have since bought an XL250 that better suits my needs. This bike is fast, and will get wheelies in several gears (not a feature I was looking for at 57 years old). It is great on twisty roads (Mulholland Highway, Sierra Nevada) and fire roads. I bought the bike from the original owner. His son busted off the speedometer, which is available on eBay for about $100. I have the broken speedometer which shows 7700 miles, and I guess I have put a few hundred on it. The XL500R was sold in 1982 in Monza Red. The gas tank, side covers, fenders, and frame are red. The seat, fork boots, number plate panels, and engine are black. The bike has a Pro-Link suspension, 12-volt electrical system, and a 2-into-1 exhaust system. The front wheel is 21" while the rear was 17". It also featured double leading shoe front brake. The engine is a 498cc OHC 4-valve single cylinder linked to a 5-speed transmission. KICK START ONLY. The XL 500 R is kick start only! If you need a button start, this is the wrong bike for you. Here is a YouTube link showing how to start this model (not my bike) https://youtu.be/lZPD2YgN6WM
