Vehicle Detail
1968 BMW R50US For sale is a very solid 1968 Vintage BMW R50US. This bike only has 38,000 miles. The bike appears to be a “survivor”. It still has the original metal wire ties that hold the main wiring harness onto the frame. The bike starts great, shifts smoothly and pulls strong. This is a triple matching number bike, motor-frame-and ID plate all match. I also have 2 original keys for the gas tank. I have a CLEAR Florida title in my name, very easy transfer. If you check my Ebay recent sales, all are directly related to vintage BMW bike sales and BMW vintage parts. I have 100% positive feedback and will keep it that way. So bid with confidence. Motor The motor has very good compression 120 PSI on both sides (see pics) I have installed a new coil, new points, new condenser, new spark plugs. The bike starts VERY GOOD, I can send you a 12 second video of me starting the bike with my hand! This proves and shows the bike has been set up properly. I never thought about even trying this till an “old timer” asked me about 20 years ago if the R50 I rode to the rally was set up right. I told him I just tuned up the bike. He said “Let’s see if you did it right” The old timer started my bike with his hand. He said “I guess you set it up right” Same with this bike. I set the timing, adjusted the carbs correctly, starts very well. The spark plug holes in the head are in excellent condition (see pics) Carburetors Carburetors were completely disassembled and cleaned in a heated ultrasonic cleaner. This seems like the only way to get the internal passages cleaned properly. New rebuild kit was installed from Bing. Carburetors have been adjusted and tweaked. I also installed 2 new throttle cables. One item that is often overlooked are the carburetors flanges. Over time these flanges may have been over tightened. This will warp the flange and make it difficult to seal the carburetors properly. I always machine these flanges smooth or straight again. This procedure will always improve the starting and performance for the bike. (see pics) Paint Everything on the bike appears to be the original paint, with the exception of the tank. When I bought the bike, he tank had a small dent in the side of the tank about 2” in diameter and about 1/8” deep. I had my painter remove the dent and put a very nice gloss black paint job on it. Before I took it to the painter I re-sealed the inside of the tank with “Red Coat Sealer” I started doing this about 5 years ago. Even though the original primer looks good, it will naturally deteriorate over 45 years. I made the mistake about 5 years ago by painting a tank that the original primer looked excellent. About 2 days after I put gas in the, tank, the brand new paint job lifted, because the original primer was not sealing the tank properly. Now that the tank is sealed properly, no future problems with the new paint job. Money and time well spent. As a nice added bonus I had the tank “hand striped”. The same way it was done in Germany years ago. All hand done and excellent (see pics) Electrical System The charging system is working perfectly and charging the correct 7.2 volts (see pics) I also installed a new gel battery. Tires The tires are in very good condition, as you can see in the pics they still have the small rubber dimples on the outside of the tires. (see pics) The bike is in very decent condition considering it is 47 years old. There is a small 2” tear in the seat. The side stand is missing, some minor rust on the mufflers and some battery acid rust around the battery tray. Other than that the bike appears to be all there. This bike will make an excellent rider and a good candidate for future restoration. These vintage bikes are a great investment. Something you can really enjoy. The bike will be sold with no warranty, I have been driving the bike around for about a month, and the bike has been doing great for me. Along with the 12 second video of me starting the bike with my hand, I also have a short video of the bike driving down the road, to show it drives and shifts well. If this helps with the sale of the bike, I could deliver the bike to the “Riding Into History Show” in St. Augustine the 3rd week of May for a small fee. The only payment accepted will be cash or a wire transfer from a well known national bank, wire transfers involve bank officials, much safer. Please no scammers, heard and seen all of the scams. I have a clear Florida title in my name, so this will be a very safe and easy transfer of ownership. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
