Vehicle Detail
Want to drive a Porsche, but you’re about $50,000 short? Here’s your chance! I’m selling my 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo. Also known as the 951. It’s been my daily driver for nearly ten years, although I didn’t drive it every day. It’s been dependable and fun. But now I’m retired and I no longer have the physical or financial ability to maintain it. Here’s an honest description of it. If you want other photos that are not posted, ask for them in the question section, and I’ll add them asap. The good: A/C has been converted to R134, and compressor, converter and dryer all replaced. Air blows cold. All engine oil seals, including the rear ones, have been replaced. Oil pan seal not replaced, but no leaks detected. Timing belt has been done within the last 3,000 miles. Engine runs great and turbo spools properly. Transmission has the “notchy” problems of the model, but it has not changed since I bought it ten years ago. Fluid and filter has been changed. New clutch and pressure plate at 110,000 miles. Automatic locks work fine. The bad: A number of trim issues. Cruise control stopped working about a year ago and I did not repair it, since I used it rarely. The body has some dings on it, as do most 27-year-old cars. All are shown in the photos. No rust. (All 944’s are galvanized steel.) There is a recent dent in the front center panel, which can be repaired. No rust. The front seats are not good, especially the driver’s seat. Still comfortable, but the leather has ripped and worn. The electric controls work correctly, so a recovering would solve the problem. Some road rash on the alloy wheels. The dash has finally developed the cracks that are all too common in this model. (There’s a great video on Youtube about reupholstering it yourself.) Clock does not work. Cigarette lighter is include, but I don’t think it works. The receptacle is good, however, as I have used a car charger in it. Rear hatch makes a little noise when hitting bumps, like most of them, but does not leak. Rear window defroster works, as does the rear window wiper. Rear cargo cover (leatherette) does not spool and is not attached to the back of the rear seat. The car needs a new steering rack. It is leaking and has to be replaced. (Drives fine for now. Just fill the power steering fluid reservoir every couple weeks.) Previously replaced about five years ago. Rebuilt rack sells for around $350, with 4-5 hours of labor required in a shop. Less if doing it yourself. Oil pressure gauge moves erratically. Probably needs a new oil pressure sender. Can be replaced easily when the steering rack is replaced. The “notchy” problem with the transmission means that the synchro for the 1st-2nd gear shift is worn. This is a very typical problem for these cars. As I stated above, it has not gotten any worse in the ten years I’ve owned the car. In practical terms, it means no speed shifting at high rpm’s from first to second. However, a deliberate shift at a normal speed works fine. (Downshifts are no problem.) It can, of course, be fixed with a transmission rebuild, but I’ve never felt the need. I took the gauges out a little while ago to replace the burnt-out light bulbs. When I put them back, the warning lights for the seatbelt and airbags tripped, and need to be reset. They were fine before. I really have loved driving this car. People still come up to me to compliment it and talk about it. I still get looks when driving it. One wanted to buy it just based on the way it sounded when accelerating past him. Upon seeing it for the first time, another told me that she would have been (sleeping with) me if she’d known I owned a Porsche. It’s been fun. By the way, it’s the third 944 that I’ve owned. It’s been kept up mechanically by Porsche-trained techs. I have all the repair paperwork for the last ten years, including the inspection I had done at a Porsche dealer when I bought it. Serious bidders in the area are welcome to come check it out in person. Also Ebay and other third-party services offer inspections, which I will happily allow. This is a great way to break into owning a Porsche. It has the speed and personality that regular (non-aspirated) 944’s don’t offer, at a price that won’t break the bank. But for those who’ve never owned one, I’ll be honest. The costs of keeping it in good shape, including parts and labor, can exceed the modest cost of buying one. For me, however, it’s all been worth it. I wish I could continue. Ah well, one of the hazards of growing old. The car is fitted with Bridgestone S-02A tires on the rear and Bridgestone RE050A Pole Positions on the front, strictly for summer use. I also have another set of identical Turbo wheels with snow tires mounted, which I will include with the car. Only three are currently good, as I hit a pothole last April, bending the rim of one and damaging the tire. Rim could be repaired for about $130 or set of three could be used as is, and new snow tire exchanged on the fourth summer rim. Please note that all four wheels with tires will not fit INSIDE the car at once, so don’t plan to drive the car home with the extra wheels in it. I’ve tried to give a completely honest description of this car, so you’ll know what you’re bidding on. The car accelerates and stops smoothly, with the turbo providing a real punch at about 3300rpm. The engine and running gear of the car are good and should provide dependable service. The body and trim are about what you’d expect of a car this old. On Nov-22-14 at 11:14:43 PST, seller added the following information: Please note: The extra set of wheels(3 good, 1 damaged) and tires is worth around $1000 by itself. On Nov-22-14 at 12:43:07 PST, seller added the following information: Windshield has no cracks or chips, but is original to car and pitted from 27 years of driving. On Nov-23-14 at 15:46:45 PST, seller added the following information: Can't guarantee that the sunroof will work perfectly. I just replaced the motor as I was sure that was the problem, but it appears that it is the darned microswitches. They need adjustment or replacement. I'm not too good at electrical stuff, but I'm working on it. I'll post the results. In any case, parts for this are either already there or cheap. Sorry to post this late, but I thought I had it solved. Can still be removed manually. On Nov-23-14 at 16:31:27 PST, seller added the following information: No more issues. On Nov-25-14 at 07:10:10 PST, seller added the following information: Don't miss your chance at a great 951!! Runs strong and smooth, which is what you should be looking for in a 944 Turbo. $1000-2000 extra to fix the steering rack and the trim issues and you've got a stunning example of a fast, great-handling Porsche.
