Vehicle Detail
1968 Firebird 400 Convertible – Concourse style restorationI posted a video walk arouind the car on my Facebook page. Look up Alan Ahern in Temple NH and you will find me. This car is being listed with my price as a starting point with no reserve. If you want to come see the car or fly into see the car just call me at 603-490-373 or send me an email. If you are a serious car collector and want to own an original numbers matching concourse restoration car don’t miss this one. I have been restoring this car for over 8 years and I have documented receipts over $40,000 and I know I have many more investments not documented. I can send additional photos per your request. I will break the car down by the major categories below and the details of the car as built. There is only one thing not original as it sits which is Power Steering. I put that in however it’s a matter of changing the pulleys and the steering box which would be a 2 hour job if that was something you wanted to do. I have hundreds and hundreds of pictures all documenting the stages of the restoration. PHS Document: VIN:223678U149533Meridian Turquoise Blue Blue interior White convertible top Firebird 400 Convertible Hydra-Matic transmission (can’t tell by looking at it if it’s the original I have no reason to believe it isn't) Safe-T Track rear axle Push button radio Mirror with control Hood tach Rally gauge cluster Custom sport steering wheel Console Clock Dual exhaust with extensions and chrome tips Front disc brakes Soft Ray glass all windows Power windows Air conditioning Folding seat and floor mats front and back 70X14 wide oval tires Drive Train: Please look at the prices in one of my photos it will show the receipts for the drive train. The drivetrain itself, engine, transmissions and rear end, have all been built by one of the best in the Northeast and I have $13,000 invested. Rear gears are 3:23, engine is balanced and blueprinted with documentation. 307 horse power according to the Dyno. Transmission is totally rebuilt with a very slight shift kit in it. All of the drive train was built to match the optimum performance without compromising any of the original features of the car. The block is a XT block. Under carriage: This was a frame off restoration. The entire underneath was sandblasted. New floors, new trunk pan, all primered, painted and sealed and then painted again black. It has all of the components for the stiffing for the convertible. The entire front frame was pulled out and sandblasted acid etched primer and painted hot rod black (a matt finish like the original which you can get anymore unless you use special paint which is the Hot Rod Black). Suspension: Everything on the front end is new. Control arms, ball joins, rubber bushing springs, tie rods, spiral shocks, new rear leaf springs and all other suspension parts. Body Panels: One fender is from GM as factory old stock, the other is original. Doors are original. ½ of the rear quarters are original it was welded, ground, welded and ground again so pretty much there will be very little touch up work in that area. The rear quarter replacement does not go into the door jam area so all the factory lines are exactly as they should be. The trunk lid is original. The body panels are not fit properly yet. That comes when the finish paint work is done. The Hood is original but needs some work. It looks like it was tapped in the front at one point and the lines need to be worked on. Paint: In order to get the exact color of the car, which is not as easy as using a paint code, I removed the paper label from the inside lid of the glove box. Under it was paint that had never seen the sun or elements. I had that scanned in and you can see in the jammed out areas and the inside picture of the door what the color looks like. This color is the color that many of the Firebirds were shown with. Convertible top: Totally soda blasted and painted. It has some painted scuffed off that will be touched up when the top is put on. It is not attached to the spring so that is why it is not down all the way. It’s a two person job and I broke my hand and just came out of a cast from 12 weeks. Not worth me risking it for the photo. Trim: I would say all of the trim is in need of replacement. They are pitted however I have most if not all of them. I do not have all the letter and the emblems. I am not sure if they can be re-plated. The rear bumper is original and was recently plated. The front bumper is not original. Wiring: I have all of the harnesses out of the car. I was going to inspect them and then put them back in. This is totally up to the restorer. My first thought was painless wiring and that would certainly make for a faster installation. All of the wires under the dash look great. Fuel: New tank built in Canada like the original with the armored one piece metal fuel lines like the original.Interior: I have all of the interior pieces including the other seat. I would say it needs a total new interior. Brakes: All new rotors, discs, rear drum brakes and parking brake all with the original brake lines and bending of the lines at the master cylinder. In essence this is a brand new car. It runs, it drives and it sounds awesome. It’s a great finish project from here. I would say if you looked at the prices of a comparable car like this from the recent auctions and you took the buy price and what it would take to make it perfect you would have an immediate upside. Come see the car. I am happy to start it and let you drive it in my yard. Call anytime. Happy bidding.
