Vehicle Detail

Up for sale is my beautiful 76 FJ40. This project has been a labor of love for me and it is the nicest cruiser that I have ever built. I set out to build a go anywhere heavy duty FJ40 that gets good fuel mileage and this is the result! I have spent 3 years and untold hours developing and machining and fabricating the drivetrain of this baby and the result is one bad FJ40. It kills me to do this, but I need a bigger vehicle to haul heavy with and so one of the toys has got to go. It has many upgrades that you don't see on your average FJ40. I installed a completely rebuilt by me Isuzu 4BD1T turbo diesel engine and coupled it to a Toyota automatic tranny and transfer case out of an 89 FJ62 land cruiser. I completely rebuilt the tranny and upgraded it to be heavier duty to handle the added torque of the turbo diesel. At the same time I did the tranny I also rebuilt the transfer case so essentially the entire drivetrain is new all the way through. It only has 4300 miles on it since I built it and it has only been used to run around on the weekends and light 4 wheeling with the family. I spent 6 months building this engine from the ground up and spared no expense to make sure it was all perfect with all new liners and pistons, all bearings for the crank and cam and rods. Every single bolt on the engine was wire wheeled and painted so it looks as nice as it runs. This engine is a 3.9 liter diesel and it has more than enough power for an FJ40. It has way more power than a standard 2F engine and it gets double the fuel mileage as well. I regularly get 21 to 23 mpgs around town with this cruiser. Many people have asked me why I went with an Isuzu diesel instead of a Toyota and it came down to parts availability. Parts for this engine can be found in any decent size town in the US whereas the Toyota diesels are pretty hard to find parts for unless you mail order them from Canada or Japan. Also, this engine is an industrial diesel engine with a completely gear driven valve train and no timing belts or chains to wear out and stretch like the factory toyota diesels. All of the work on this Cruiser was performed by me. I'm a longtime machinist and craftsman and I was the first person in the Land Cruiser community to adapt an Isuzu diesel to a Toyota automatic transmission. I'm not a car dealer or reseller of Land Cruisers, but I do love to build these trucks and occasionally I sell one. I'm a Firefighter here in Tucson and Cruisers are my passion and this is a great one. This is an Arizona original cruiser and is completely rust free. There is some minor surface rust on the rear axle housing but that is it, no corrosion at all on the frame or undercarriage, anywhere! The only corrosion that was on this truck was a small amount on the inside bottom of the ambulance doors and around the bottom window lips on the ambulance doors where moisture got behind the window seal. The hardtop and doors will still need to be finished as they are in original condition except for the side panels for the hardtop that I converted to corner vent windows like the '77 and later cruisers have. Please take a look at all the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. I have a bunch of photos in my Photobucket file that show lots of different angles and more pics of the door bottoms and the rear sill and frame pics there are also a bunch of photos of the truck going through its build process as well. The link to the photos is here. Your Bucket (167) Shipping of the hardtop and doors is going to be an issue if you live thousands of miles from me. I could probably bolt the hardtop and sides on the tub for shipping but the doors are stripped and would be tough to attach to the truck right now. If you want everything shipped, it will be at your expense and I will assist the best I can with packing and such. I have done many, many upgrades to make this a great rig and here is a list its features.FJ60 Power steering boxHydroboost power brake booster110 amp chevy one wire alternator Triple winshield wipers like the non-USA FJ40 LX model ( I did this with all toyota fj40 parts )Second fuel door so its ready for an auxiliary tank with matching lock so you only need one key. (no tank yet, but it is all ready for one)Heavy duty transmission cooler with electric fan.Diehard Platinum Battery (Odyssey) Heavy duty 2/0 battery cable wiringStainless battery boxHeavy duty oversized tie rodAutomatic transmission inline spin on filter system for longer tranny life Higher output Holset HX30 Turbo with much better performance than the factory Isuzu turbo80 series land cruiser air filter housing with custom turbo intake piping and silicone couplers.Upgraded vinyl seatsHeavy duty swing out tire carrier with 1250 pound spindle and integrated trailer hitch.Wiring harnesss completely gone through at time of rebuild and new wire protection done throughoutCustom fabricated front bumper with pre-runner bars4" suspension lift with Rancho 5000 shocks all the way aroundBFG 33"x 10.50"x15 mud terrains that two of them are new and the other two have about 90% treadHeavy duty 4 core aluminum radiatorCustom twin stick transfer case shifterRear seat out of Montero sport that's been reapholstered with marine vinyl. The hardtop sides have been converted to corner vent window style with toyota parts I have a big box of factory Toyota weatherstripping for the doors and windows that I spent over $400 for that will come with the truckI also have reproduction interior front door panels that are Grey in color and are brand new in the box that will go with the truck Vehicle defects and items that still need to be completed on this FJ40 The paint is in great shape but does have some scratches and chips from a few wheeling trips and dirt road driving. The heater unit was non-existent when I bought this truck so you will still need to find one if that is something you want. The front knuckles on the axle are leaking and so it will need to be resealed eventuallyThere is no radioThe electric fans for the tranny cooler and radiator are on a manual switch on the dash and eventually it should have a thermostatic switch installed so they come on automaticallyThe front two tires are BFG KM2 and are brand new 2000 miles ago, the rears are BFG KM1 and are in great shape but are older. Eventually I was going to buy two more KM2s and use the rears for spares. The hardtop and doors need to be finishedThe upper dash pad was gone when I purchased the truck so I was going to install a BTB steel dash box but never got around to it. I have a bunch more photos of the undercarriage and rear sill and frame rails showing how rust free this truck is, but Ebay will only allow 24 pictures. If you would like to see more photos of a certain area or whatever, please email me and I will email them to you. This is a great FJ40 with many upgrades over a standard run of the mill one. Turbo diesel engines are much more durable and troublefree than a carbureted gasoline engine from the mid 70's.If you have any questions at all about this great truck, please feel free to email me and I will respond promptly. If you would like to talk at length about it, email me your phone # and I will call and answer any and all questions you may have. If you would like to have this truck checked out by a local mechanic here in Tucson, just let me know and I would be glad to take it to them to be inspected. Shipping will be the purchaser's responsibility to arrange, but I will assist in loading and such with whatever is needed. This vehicle is being sold as is but please understand that I am not hiding anything about this vehicle. It is in great shape and goes down the road nice and straight an stops very well especially with the powerful Hydroboost brake system. If there were any known safety problems with this rig, I would fix them. I'm a firefighter and safety is a big part of my job. I'm an honest seller here on Ebay and have never had a negative feedback in all the years I've been selling because I describe my items accurately and I don't hide anything. I don't like suprises when I buy stuff and I'm sure you don't either. Upon completion of the auction the winning bidder within 24hrs will pay a $500 payment through Paypal to secure the vehicle and ensure they are a serious buyer. The rest of the payment for the vehicle will be within 3 business days via wire transfer or a bank cashiers check. Upon the funds clearing into my account, the Title will be overnight shipped to the winning bidder and pickup or shipping arrangements can be made. I will assist in any way I can to help the new owner. Thanks,Don
