1970 Datsun Sports 2000 Roadster Restoration Project 1970 Datsun Sports 2000 Roadster Restoration Project Please note: for some reason this auction is not displaying all 38 photos at once. To see all photos, scroll to the bottom, then move the horizontal slider all the way to the right. This will expose a SECOND vertical slider inside the existing vertical slider. BOTH vertical sliders must be moved all the way down to see all photos. The last photo is the engine data plate. Sorry -- if you know why this is so, please tell me and I'll fix it if possible! This is an extremely nice condition 1970 Datsun Sports 2000 Roadster restoration project. There is minimal body damage (explicitly shown and described in the photos below) and minimal rust (also clearly described and shown in the photos below). The body is very straight, with no bondo that I can detect. Neither the floorboards nor the door bottoms are rusted out -- on a never-restored 44-year-old vehicle, this is surprising and exciting to see. The previous owner swapped the engine and transmission for what looks like an L18 engine from a Datsun 610 with a Weber downdraft carburetor. The original 135hp U20 engine and 5-speed transmission from the vehicle are included. The car has 69401 miles on it. The VIN is SRL311-13886, with a manufacture date of September 1969. The vehicle data plate and the engine data plate match. The car has a clean Missouri title in my name. I purchased it approximately 20 years ago. The previous owner bought it as a fun project for himself and his young son to work on together. The original engine would not run (the owner said it was a spun bearing), and since rebuilding it was beyond the scope of their project together, he opted to replace it with another Datsun four-cylinder engine and transmission they had available. From inspection, it looks like they swapped in a Nissan L18 engine and manual transmission from a Datsun 610 (from previous personal experience, this is a very nice, reliable and peppy engine; it is the direct ancestor to the Datsun 240Z/260Z/280Z 6-cylinder L-series engines (L24, L26, L28)). The installation looks well done, with no noticeable modifications in the engine compartment other than very slightly (perhaps a quarter inch) trimming the top of the inside flange of the left front frame for exhaust clearance. The project lost steam and the vehicle sat in the back of their garage for years before I heard about it. I am including the original 135hp Datsun U20 engine and matching 5-speed transmission. The engine should be rebuildable -- I note that it does not turn easily; since I have not done any disassembly on this project I do not know any further condition details. The original driveshaft is also included (it was removed when I towed the car home two decades ago). Previous to that, all I can tell is that the vehicle got a repaint in navy blue (original color was powder blue). Someone added a very nice aftermarket hardtop, though the steel tube convertible top frame has disappeared. The currently installed wheels include one original steel wheel and three aftermarket wheels. Note that there are several lug nuts missing (there are enough to be safe for towing, but they need to be checked for tightness). The tires are worn but serviceable and hold air well (from another car a few years ago when we replaced the tires on it). The vehicle as it currently stands is suited for transport using either a trailer or a front-end tow dolly. Since the front bumper is detached (included with the trunk full of parts), unless you want to try refitting it (bring hardware and tools!) you will not be able to tow the vehicle using a bumper-mounted towbar. I'll note that the hood is not bolted to the body and both it and the hard top should be strapped down securely before you hit the highway. Remember to make space for the original engine (350 pounds) and transmission as well! Additionally, there is also a trunk full of parts, including: The original front bumper Both original SU carbs SU intake manifold (with spacers) SU air cleaner assembly Jack Original drive shaft Starter (presumed original) Front grille (intact, bent) Rear view mirror Two headlight chrome bezels Interior trim panel Four brake shoes (used, usable?) Original stick shift lever Two unused NOS wheel brake cylinders (and I notice that there are new brake and clutch master cylinders installed) Lug wrench Miscellaneous fuel lines, emissions piping, etc. Bag of hardware (nuts, bolts, etc.) Another American carb (Rochester(?) downdraft two-barrel) -- possibly an alternate to the current Weber? I have done zero to the car other than move it to my garage. By my calculations, it has sat quietly in one garage or another for most of its 44-year lifetime. I'd love to see this go to a better home and get back on the road. It's in too nice a shape to consider parting it out. As should be obvious, you will need to pick up this vehicle (as well as the separate original engine and transmission) in St. Louis, Missouri. Access to and from nearby interstate highways is very easy. I can offer only limited assistance in loading the engine and transmission -- be prepared to winch it up into your tow vehicle. Timing of your pick up is flexible -- I will accomodate as best I can, but would like the vehicle removed within 30 days of auction end. This item is sold AS IS, and no guarantee is offered or implied. Very straight, very complete (hood is not attached, thus the "popped up" front edge). The front bumper is detached but included (photo farther down): Comes with a very nice aftermarket fiberglas removable hardtop (a "SnugTop" by Custom Hardtops of Long Beach, CA): Both sides are very straight: Note the quarter panel wrinkles in front and behind the right rear wheel: Fitted with a tow ball! Gotta be an unusual addition to a Roadster!: The hood is very straight. Front hood hinges are disconnected so it appears popped up. Bumper is detached but included. See next photo for a closeup of front apron damage: A closeup of the damage to the front apron -- looks like someone pulled up a little too close to a parking bollard: The interior is complete. Padded dash has the usual cracks: Looks like it even still has the original carpeting: The original seats in good condition -- no tears, splits, or rips: A closeup view of the bottom of the drivers side door -- perfectly solid and nearly rust free!: A closeup view of the bottom of the passenger side door -- also perfectly solid and nearly rust free!: Pulling out the carpets, we find solid floorboards (some slight surface rust) on the driver side!: And matching non-rusted out passenger-side floorboards! Very surprising for a 44-year old vehicle!: The bottom of the trunk is definitely rusted, but still feels solid and is not rusted through. But notice the rust-through in the left rear wheel well: A more revealing photo of the rust damage in the bottom of the left rear wheel well: Surprisingly, not much more than surface rust in the right rear wheel well: For some unknown reason, a previous owner cut a sloppy hole in the trunk bulkhead: Here's a view from inside of the rear parcel shelf, showing the weird hole in the trunk bulkhead. This surface is normally covered by a padded panel: The inside of the aftermarket fiberglas hardtop (a "SnugTop" by Custom Hardtops, Long Beach CA): Left front corner shows some damage inside (no visible outside damage at this point): Left rear outside damage: Some more externally visible damage on the right front: The inside of the detached hood -- no damage, light surface rust in a few spots: The currently installed Datsun 610 L18 engine with Weber downdraft carb -- a pretty nice job, really. Looks like new brake and clutch master cylinders too: The original front bumper in good shape (one crease inboard the right overrider) is detached but included. The left mounting brace is bent inwards (visible in photo): The collection of additional parts packed into the trunk (see text above for inventory): The original U20 engine, removed by the previous owner, left-hand side: The original U20 engine, rear view: The original U20 engine, right-hand side: The original U20 engine, front view: The original U20 engine, top view: The original 5-speed transmission, top view: The original 5-speed transmission, left-hand side: The original 5-speed transmission, bottom view: The original 5-speed transmission, front end (throwout bearing still in place; splines are clean): The vehicle data plate on the driver-side door pillar: And the matching engine dataplate on the engine compartment firewall top: Shipping: There are no shipping costs. You will have to arrange with me to come to St. Louis, Missouri to pick up the vehicle at a mutually agreeable time and date. You should plan on removing the vehicle within 30 days of the auction end. Payment: Your full payment via Paypal must be received within seven calendar days of the auction end, otherwise the non-paying bidder process will be started to recover costs. Everything you need to complete your purchase is present in the "You Won!" email that eBay sends you at the end of the auction as well as in your My eBay page; there will be no additional communication from me prior to your payment.
