Vehicle Detail
1976 BMW 2002VIN: 2375850When I moved from the East Coast to California it was great to see so many cool older rust free cars on the road. I wanted something more vintage. I love the 1970s and a friend mentioned that the BMW 2002 cars were great to have if I wanted something from that era. I found my 1976 model in 2008 and I’ve used it as a daily driver to get to work and run around. It’s been so much fun. I bought it from the original owner who purchased it in the San Francisco Bay Area and had it in CA it's whole life. People that like these cars always ask about it when they see me driving around. I just like the style and the way it drives. But what I did not know is that the 1976 model cars (and newer) have to get smogged checked in the part of Sonoma County that I live in. There are more rural areas of the county where one does not have to get it smogged. Well, getting this car smogged is a real hassle. It involves lots of work from my mechanic which also means days without the car and money that I would rather spend fixing the car up rather that get it smogged checked. I just got it smogged on February 14th, 2014. In 2 years I will have to do it all again. I’m just not wanting to deal with that anymore so I’m selling the car because of that. I love driving this car so I’m quite sad about it.I think that this car would be great for...
1. Someone that lives in a part of California where they would not have to smog check the car,
2. Someone that lives in basically any other state. According to my mechanic they would be able to take all the smog equipment off and really modify the engine to perform even better, faster etc. The car is in really good shape for being pretty much stock, not souped up or redecorated. It’s clean, very little in the way of body rust. Here is what does not work....1. The windshield washers
2. The rear windshield defroster
3. The fan that blows warm air when you turn the heater on
4. There is one very minor dent in the rear drivers side fender. Otherwise the body is in great shape. Those things were never worth fixing to me because I’m lucky to live in an area with such great weather, not too cold, not too hot. The car has things that I know are not original such as...
1. The front seats which I understand are racing seats (my mechanic often fixes these cars up as racing cars)
2. The Carburetor (the new one is a weber which I understand to be a very common upgrade)
3. The stereo which has a CD player. It words but sounds kind of weak, not Hip-Hop ready. I have all the repair paper work from when I bought the car to now. Here are the highlights of what I have done with the car.2008

Oil Pressure Switch At some point it was painted white. The original color was a dark blue.My Mechanic (Casey Motorsports in Petaluma, CA) says that the things that will need to be addressed in the future are...Front Suspension
Shift Shaft Seal
Replace the rubber gas hose boot So, as you can see, in addition to the semi annual CA smog checks, I’ve done quite a bit of work to the car and it’s running better now than when I bought it. But since I can only afford to have one car I need one that will require less time in the shop and the smog check station. I need something boring but practical. If I could afford to keep this as a second car I’d keep it and be very happy to have it. All manual, nothing automatic. You have to roll the windows down with your arm.
If you are local I’d be happy to have you test drive the car, it’s fun to drive.
