Vehicle Detail
1963 Avanti R1 (non supercharged) with 289 Jet Thrust Engine and Borg-Warner Power Shift automatic transmission (original and numbers matching - I will include the Studebaker Build Sheet). Factory a/c (never hooked up - all there, just never charged with freon). The Avanti was restored by me (AvantiBob Weir) in Southern California and was brought to Northern Idaho when I moved here in 2012. I have restored a total of nine Studebaker Avantis from my California shop and all of them (except for one) are outside of the USA (Australia, France, Venezuela, Canada, etc.). This Avanti has been stored in heated facilities since its move to Idaho in 2012, and is currently on display at a museum in Northern Idaho (that museum is located about 40 miles north of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho). I have put only a few miles on the Avanti since 2012. Everything was restored, rebuilt and re-plated in the restoration. It does not have the original tires, wheels and hubcaps (I sold an R2 to a client in France, and he wanted the original look - so I swapped the original tires for the ones currently on this Avanti). I will include a set of hubcaps with the sell. Please ask questions, as I can write a novel about this car. I have only entered it in three Studebaker Driver's Club/AOAI sponsored car shows and placed in the top three in all shows (two second places and one third place). The color is from a 1999 Ford Mustang and is not the true Avanti Red (that's why I never placed #1 at those car shows). I hate to let her go, as she is my first Avanti and the only one I have left. I do not have a shop in Northern Idaho yet and will probably start restoring Avantis again once I build the new garage. Please call if you have any questions. Reserve price will not be disclosed and I have the right to end this auction early (the Avanti is listed locally). AvantiBob Weir: (951) 640-9820 / no text messages please, as they will not be answered. Happy Bidding! On Mar-28-14 at 16:19:19 PDT, seller added the following information: Lots of Questions: Numbers Matching - a copy of the build sheet will be in the truck. Tires and Wheels - these are NOT original Avanti tires. If you want original, get four 6" Dodge rims at a junk yard, wheel paint from Studebaker International, period correct tires from Coker and four Avanti hubcaps will be in the trunk (the Avanti does look very good with the existing custom tires). Hog Troughs are good. The Avanti was started in 1999 and finished in 2002. Less than 2000 miles on engine rebuild. Only about 10 miles driven in two years (always started monthly, brought to operating temp and turned off). Stored in winter in a heated facility (last year in an airplane hanger in Sandpoint, ID and this year in a museum near Sagle, ID). Factory a/c, p/s (there is a small leak somewhere in the p/s system - either a loose fitting or a cracked line. All lines were replaced when restored), Power windows (the motors need to be replaced as I never got to this. They cost between $135 and $195 each. Windows are now all the way up). I'm pretty sure it has twin traction (still trying to find the "baby book" with the build sheet to confirm this. New Silvertone Exhaust System installed during restoration (Quiet Tone Mufflers. I did not install the stainless system, since the car was restored in CA). Stainless steel ignition covers are not installed, but will be put in the trunk. Spare tire included (dodge 6" rim). Front light covers are glass and in "good "shape for their age (could be polished to look new). Hope this helps. I am very "up front" about the cars I sell. This Avanti needs about a weekend with some tools to "dial-in" and make ready for the summer. The carb was rebuilt last year (two tubes were clogged) and it starts up like the day it was built. Check my feedback regarding other cars I have sold thru EBay (others sold thru Hemmings with zero issues). On Mar-29-14 at 14:16:37 PDT, seller added the following information: I received a call regarding the condition of the doors and if the Avanti had "sagging door syndrome". The passenger side door does sag and has to be lifted to close correctly. Driver side is good. This is an issue with some Avantis and has to do with the weight if the door and the fact the car is 51 years old. There was an article last year in the AOAI magazine about Avanti door sag, and how to fix it. I never repaired this door, as all I currently do is lift a little on the door handle to close it. I have adjusted the "Reserve" price by $1,000.00 to compensate for this. If you have bid on the car and want to resend your bid you have to do nothing, as the reserve has not yet been hit. I am "up front" about the cars I sell and do not want there to be any surprises. On Mar-30-14 at 08:10:40 PDT, seller added the following information: I told you I could write a novel about this Avanti. Someone called and asked about the paint color. The last two pictures show the Avanti Tribe in CA (one of these photos is in the AOAI magazine this last issue). The Avanti for sale is the one on the bottom/right lift. The photos prior to that in this listing have a little orange tint to them, so I have included a few pics taken when I transported it to Northern Idaho that were taken outside and show the true color of the car. On Mar-30-14 at 08:43:03 PDT, seller added the following information: Another phone call - Yes, the hood does close. The first set of pics show the hood unlatched (when I have the trickle charger on the battery, I do not close the hood all of the way). The last four pictures taken outside (on the trailer) show the hood latched down completely. Good question and a keen eye. If you email me with your questions I will post them for everyone to see (If you call me, I will also add my responses to this listing for others to see). I have gotten a lot of questions regarding the tires. The Avanti actually looks better with these rims and tires. For the purists, you can always change them out. If you look at the photo of the four Avantis on the lifts, you can see examples of what an Avanti looks like with the period correct tire set-up. If you also look at the photos of the four Avantis on the lifts, you can compare the original Avanti Red paint to the color of this Avanti (the right lift shows two Avantis. The one on the bottom is the one for sale and the one above it was sold three years ago. The top Avanti is the correct Avanti Red, and the Avanti below is the 1999 Ford Mustang Red that is the Avanti in this auction). The car cover in the back seat will come with the Avanti, along with the steering wheel cover shown in the photos. Thanks for all the questions and I am available either by phone or email to take your calls. I never thought I would get this response and am very happy that you all like this Avanti. On Mar-30-14 at 09:24:09 PDT, seller added the following information: Another phone call - The Avanti does not have the front grill attached to it. It wasn't on the build sheet, so I never installed one. I have one in excellent condition that I will include in the sale (it will be placed in either the trunk or the back seat. The buyer will have to install it). Thanks for the call.On Mar-31-14 at 07:57:53 PDT, seller added the following information: Another call early this morning - This person was confused about the color (the photos taken in the hanger, the pics on the lifts, the photos with the Avanti outside on the trailer). The best representation is: Go to "Seller Information" in the upper right hand corner of this listing. Click on "ME". That will take you to a picture of the Avanti Tribe. The picture of this Avanti (lower right side) is the best example of the car color. He also asked about the license plate found in the interior shot of the car (the California plate that is "R1 4 R2"). No, I didn't replace an R2 with an R1 (as this Avanti has the original R1 engine that came from the factory). I am Robert ll (named after my uncle, killed in WWll), so the license plate references me as the second, not an R2 engine. You all have very good eyes. Keep the questions coming, or call if you have a question. On Mar-31-14 at 13:43:07 PDT, seller added the following information: Okay, I went to the museum today, put the battery on "trickle-charge" and took some picture. I also found the "Baby-Book" that contains the Studebaker "Build- Sheet". Both the Build Sheet and the Baby Book are included with the sale. The Avanti does not have twin traction. It was originally Avanti Gold and was shipped to Key West Florida after 1-25-1963 (that was the final assembly date). I purchased it on 5-24-1999 and it was blue/gray. The only evidence of the original gold color was found on a small section of the firewall when it was painted for me in the year 2000. The mileage at the time I purchased it was 37,507 (mechanical limits for the odometer/5 digits only, so that should be 137,507 miles - the car sat for 10 years, as the owner inherited it from her father and she was going to restore it. It was located in Stone Mountain, GA). The current mileage today reads 39,955. So at little over 2400 miles since 2002 (when it was finally put back on the road). There are two pictures of the hog troughs (rocker panels) taken today (3-31-2014). There was a coating put on these hog troughs (rattle can spray) from the previous owner and there is some over spray from the paint job completed in the year 2000. Some of the coating is coming off and there is a very little amount of surface rust with no rust thru. That's it for additional pictures taken as per your requests. I could only upload two photos today (reached my max of 24 pics), so please email me if you want additional pictures and I will forward directly. Please call or email if you have any additional questions.
