Vehicle Detail

1968 Mustang-289-4 Speed toploader transmission. It's a Frankenstein. VIN and door tag decode as 1968, but it has 67 "side scoops" and hood. Interior is 68. Engine block numbers decode as a 66 289, Transmission numbers decode as a toploader for a 68 Mustang 390 V8 car. VIN number and door tag indicate that it was originally a Lime Gold 68 with a black interior and a black vinyl top, 3 speed 289. Not anymore. My guess is that two cars were combined for a restoration. That being said, they did a pretty good job of it. The Good: Runs and shifts well. Has had some upgrades including steering (rack and pinion, I think) and front suspension using Total Control Products. It has front disc brakes. Pertronix ignition module. New battery. New clutch and flywheel. Has 2005ish Mustang wheels and decent tires, Interior is very nice with new speakers, new door panels, new carpet with new sound deadener. Gauges work. Frame rails are solid, with the usual bit of surface rust. The Mediocre: Paint and body work are maybe a 6 out of 10. The white color hides it, but it's noticeable.A magnet will stick to it everywhere, but its wavy in spots. Probably a "10-15 footer". Dual exhaust has older headers with glass pack mufflers that are a bit loud for my taste. Floor pans were replaced at some point, and they are good shape, but it was done a bit sloppy. They are solid, but not a perfect job. The Bad: Someone put a Quadra Jet Carb on it. I think it has a bad choke. Sometimes it takes a shot of starting fluid to get it running, but it purrs along once it's warm. I have a rebuilt Autolite 4100 4 barrel for it that I might install this week. If not, it goes with the car. The weirdo has some electrical gremlins. Dome light, drivers brake light, lighter, license plate light and horn are inoperable. (headlights, tail lights, parking lights and turn signals are good) Radio is brand new, but it quit working and I haven't repaired it. Overall, a good little V8 cruiser and an outstanding candidate to restomod with fuel injection, 5 speed etc. If you want a numbers matching, concourse trophy winner, this ain't it. Car is sold as is, where is. No warranties etc etc. This Mustang is cool, but weird and the fairly low reserve price reflects that. Deposit required, Cash on pick up. May I suggest if you don't want to buy it, or you don't have the cash, don't bid on it ....Please. On Mar-16-14 at 00:10:34 PDT, seller added the following information: One of the pictures shows the car with the "GT" styled steel wheels. That pic is from last fall before 05 wheels were put on. The old wheels are gone. The car comes with the 05 wheels. On Mar-16-14 at 10:38:10 PDT, seller added the following information: In the last 6 months there have been three dime-sized drops of oil on the garage floor. Not enough for me to figure out where it's coming from. I replaced the valve covers and gaskets, haven't seen any drops since then. I THINK it has 302 heads on it but, I'm not sure. Previous owner seemed to think so, but I couldn't confirm. The intake is an Offenhauser. The car IS for sale locally, so I do reserve the right to end the auction early. However, if the reserve is met, it sells.
