NO RESERVE RARE BARN FIND NOT RUNNING Bid To OWN it! VIN # 58L8101 was the 2,000th '58 Packard built & one of only 678 Hardtop Coupes, also one of the last 34 Packards ever built! I believe this car was built on July 23rd. Wow--you only hear about finds like this once in a lifetime! This Packard has been inside of a barn for about 40 years ---- only taken outside long enough to re-do the barn floor one summer! I am selling this car to clear an estate and all info is from deceased owners family. True mileage is unknown! Car was running when parked in the garage. Owner never got aoround to restoring it. When I first saw it there was a critter nest on right side of engine compartment that has been removed. Body is in pretty good over all shape, pictures are fairly detailed. Some cracks in fiberglass headlight bucket, tail fins pretty nice. Tail light lenses are cracked. Most of the stainless and chrome trip is in tact as is glass! Interior is all there including gauges and radio, window cranks, etc. Chassis, frame, suspension in really pretty clean with just typical surface rust that would be expected on any vehicle sitting in a barn for so many years. No rust outs that I could see. I did not put the car up on a lift!! WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET! I don't believe hub caps are still around---I have not opened the trunk. Clean title. There is pitting and surface rust on some of the trim, surface rust on body panels and engine bay. Bumpers have some pits and surface rust but appear to be intact! I have not opened trunk--no key, looked under car---did not see any major rust outs but there is surface rust as would be expected on a vehicle left in a barn for many years. Photos are detailed so look closely! Car is sold as-is where is, no extras, what you see is what you get! VIN #58L8101 is the 2,000th '58 Packard built Interesting info from Studebaker Drivers Club Forums: The following excerpt is from "The Studebaker Almanac" by Richard Quinn, Turning Wheels, August 2002, pages 24-25: "Records show that the very last factory assembled Packard car came of the line on July 25, 1958*". It was a four-door sedan (body Y8) painted Mountain Blue and carried serial number 58L 8134 (see left). It was one of 15 Packards assembled on that date and unfortunately no dealer destination is provided. The last hardtop was serial 58L 8123 and it was also produced on July 25, the last wagon, 58L 8115, was assembled a day earlier" Richard documented the last Packard Hawk 58LS 1588 produced on July 24, printing it's production order as well. As background, the serial numbers for the Packard sedan, hardtop and station wagon begin with 58L 6101, the Packard Hawk hardtop with 58L-K9 1001. Please share with us your finding from the production order and your progress restoring it, and ask any and all questions that arise as you move through the process. You'll find this site to be a wellspring of information as well as your Studebaker Driver's Club membership. NOT RUNNING NEEDS COMPLETE RESTORATION There is pitting and surface rust on some of the trim, surface rust on body panels and engine bay. Bumpers have some pits and surface rust but appear to be intact! I have not opened trunk--no key, looked under car---did not see any major rust outs but there is surface rust as would be expected on a vehicle left in a barn for many years. Final Packards[edit] 1958 Packard 2-door hardtop coupe 1958 saw the Packard line reduced to two models and four body styles; a 4-door sedan, a 2-door hardtop coupe (only 678 built, sometimes referred to as the "Starlight", a name used by Studebaker), a 4-door station wagon which simply bore the Packard name, and the Packard Hawk, a modification of Studebaker's Golden Hawk with a "fishmouth" Packard grille. Restyled by Duncan McRae, Studebaker-Packard's finances dictated that the changes for 1958 be made as cheaply as possible. Quad headlights were achieved by affixing fiberglass pods to the previous year's front fenders designed for two headlights. In the rear, McRae attempted to follow the tailfin craze established by Chrysler's 1957 "Forward Look" by crafting outward canted fiberglass fin extensions that were mounted to the tops of the existing vertical rear fenders. 1956 Clipper taillight units continued to be used. Packards also adopted a low, wide "fishmouth" grille to further distinguish them from their Studebaker cousins. 1958 Packard's grafted tailfins. Note 1956 Clipper taillights. Despite McRae's efforts, the car that emerged appeared cobbled together, rather than as a cohesive design. Auto reviewer "Uncle" Tom McCahill remarked that from the rear it looked as if the cars had been left in the sun too long and the canted fiberglass fins had started to melt down the straight rear fender sides. Only 2,034 of the three standard models; sedan, hardtop coupe (only 678 built), and station wagon were produced; an additional 588 Packard Hawks were built as well. The rarest of all '58 Packards is the station wagon, with only 159 produced. The last Packard rolled off the South Bend assembly line on July 13, 1958. In 1962 the Studebaker-Packard Corporation officially dropped "Packard" from its name.
